Netflix announces Blu-ray exclusivity

Posted on February 11th, 2008 at 08:51 EDT

Netflix, an online video rental store, announced today that the company would exclusively support Sony’s Blu-ray format for all of its high definition move rentals.

The company cited Time Warner’s own announcement on supporting Blu-ray as the main reasons for its decision, confirming that all HD-DVD rentals would be pulled once the life cycle of remaining stock has depleted.

"The prolonged period of competition between two formats has prevented clear communication to the consumer regarding the richness of the high-def experience versus standard definition”, commented Netflix Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos.

“We are now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def. Going forward, we expect that all of the studios will publish in the Blu-ray format and that the price points of high-def DVD players will come down significantly."

This is getting ridiculous, when is it going to end? What brainless fools are still buying HD-DVDs for it to not announce its own death?

Time Warner was a punch to the face and this is a leg sweep to HD DVD.  Only a matter of time before they hit the ground.

So many people are still not informed. My barber only the other day was telling me he was thinking of getting the HD-DVD add-on for his 360. I told him about the current situation in which he is now not going to buy one. After that he said he has just got himself a PS3 but he didn't realize it had a blu-ray player in it.
