New 80GB SKU dated for Europe

With David Reeves announcing that the new SKU would find its way onto shelves on August 27, it came as a shock when online retailers like Amazon and GAME began listing the item for August 22. While this bumped up release is more than welcomed, it seems likely that Leipzig will be host to some sort of announcement in regards to this change. For those gamers holding out and waiting for this SKU in Europe, it seems the wait has been cut in half.

As most know, this new SKU was announced at E3 2008 as a replacement model for the current standard 40GB unit. The new 80GB will feature the same standards as the 40GB with the exception of a larger HDD.

Lol, what's the point of your post?

I think Sony's point is giving you 40 extra GB of space for the same price, or in dumbed down terms for you...FREE.

What is this? Are europeans stuck with PS3's with only two usb ports and no card readers?! I thougt the 80GB had the same specs like the 60GB version vith 4USB ports! Now we only have the dumbd down version... Thats so fu**t upp!

that 80gig ps3 has lousy backwards compatibility if it has the same standard as the 40gig, am i right? i play a lot of ps1 and ps2 games and i always will. so i'll just stick to my 60gig.

Ferre-  It's not that EUROPEANS will be the ones "stuck" with the PS3 that has 2 USB ports and the like....it's that this is going to be the ONLY model available pretty much world wide.  Here in the US, it's been difficult to find even the 80GB that HAS some backwards compatibility for some time now.  Looks like BC is gone for good unless Sony somehow introduces it again via a software update of some kind.  We'll see.  Bottom line, it's not like Europe is getting hosed compared to other territories or anything like that, it's just the way things are going to be moving forward.

Thaks for the info jphuff. I cant understand why Sony does this. Im not into PS2 games so the BC doesn't bother me that mush, but why Sony is so miserly with a cheap thing like the USB ports I can't understand. If it was up to me I would do a SKU with 4USB ports in the front and 2 in the rear for my external HDD and like... I for one think ther is a greate demand for a hi end SKU with BC and 4+ USB ports! Anybody with me on that?

sony should sell HDD's in shops in stead of bringing out a new console it would save sony alot of money

psn id: gingo... its good to get extra HDD space but its sad to lose the backwards compatability as every ps3 model should have that

I think it's probably gonna be the only model available until sony announces a 120 GB for $499 at Leipzig.  It makes sense, these two new models will moderately boost sales and give a good holiday performance and then come summer 09 they'll drop the 80gb and 120gb $100 each.

I'd prefer it if they actually sorted out the b/c,cuz that's still one of the reasons i'm trying to get my hands on an american 60gb.

@ a couple of people, there never going 2 bring back 60 GB stuff that was included first time around (4 usb etc) since they never sold so good since they where so expeseive they needed 2 to take pointless stuff out that u don't really need and put down the console price a far bit 2. u wanted it cheaper now u got it cheaper now u want what got put out make up ur mine lol just joking. i think they made the right decission but there sould like #16 said offer a sku 2 but they won't cause not much people would buy it so it would be a waste of money in the end since it's easy to make 1 type then 2 types full stop.
