New York Police come down hard on Saints Row 2

According to Ripten, the New York Police department has it in for THQ's decidedly unsaintly Saints Row 2. Apparently, Illinois developer Volition may have its New York privileges revoked.

NYPD union boss Patrick Lynch has been carping on royally at New York's Daily News, claiming, “horrible and violent video games desensitize young people to violence while encouraging depravity, immorality while glorifying criminal behavior.” It's only a game, Patrick. Like table tennis and tiddlywinks and that, you know.

Saints Row 2, as you'll probably be aware, is an especially down-and-dirty specimen of Grand Theft Auto 3 clone. One of your first tasks in the game is to bust out of an offshore prison, killing any and all representatives of the law enforcement community in the process, so it's no surprise the real-life fuzz are getting steamed up.

Saints Row 2 came out on Wednesday in North America and hits European shelves tomorrow. Australia gets it today.

More people kill in the name of religion than they do in the name of video games, why not whine about that????

I wonder how many killings will involve in this game, just like GTAIV.

As i would say if you can't handle yourself, then dont play these type of games.

religion is completely invalid here.   Looks like we may have another J. Thompson wannabe sometime soon though.  I'll bet you anything that Thompson has a hand in it too.

I do understand where he's coming from, but at the end of the day it's still just a game. I dont think a video game glorifies violence any more than a blockbuster movie. But i do know what he means; killing police isnt exactly great. But then again i'll happily play GTA any day of the week cause they have such great storylines. Dunno about Saints Row 2 though...

     Rated M for "MATURE"

its on the box. i think i'm mature enough to realize that this is just a game and not to be taken seriously. PARENTS BEWARE kids do not count as mature individuals their minds are weak and are so easily influenced, do not buy this game for them.

    Lol!!

This is funny. The NYCPD, from what i hear and see on the news, is the main police dept that needs to see this type of game. They make me sick! i'm not going to go into it but they have absolutely no reason to be crying about anything..

@ #7, I just started the game but so far the action is there!  The layout and scope of the city is not near GTA4, but the craziness is there.

Quit picking on videogames!!! damn- IT'S ONLY A GAME. That's the point of games- to do stuff you either can't do in real life, or do stuff you would get in trouble for in real life.

Correct: “horrible and violent video games desensitize young people to violence while encouraging depravity, immorality while glorifying criminal behavior.”

Incorrect: It's only a game, Patrick. Like table tennis and tiddlywinks and that, you know.

Statistically, those who enjoy these types of games don't go as far in life than those who shun them....Can't argue with the stats.

all i hear is whining.  people like this needs to stop worrying about kids playing violent video games, more likely i would blame the parents instead. don't we have that rating thing ERSB.  so, then go after parents dumb cops.  they probably got PAID by hillary clinton to do this.   ANY FOR OF ENTERTAINMENT IS BAD!   i'm just glad she didn't make it in the election. she'd try to take the video game industry down some how.

The NYPD are saying negative things about Saints Row 2, but at the same time the majority of them will go home after work and play Call of Duty 4.

This is why we have the rating system in place. Maybe they should just crack down on selling Mature rated games to minors.  Invoke harsher punishment on retailers that do. That's the only way to help this issue. Parents need to pay closer attention to what their kids are watching and playing.  Plain and simple. If you don't want your child to perform the acts he sees and plays on games like Saints Row 2 or GTAIV, then don't buy them the damn games or at least explain to them the things they see in this game are absolutely not ok to do in real life! I grew up playing Mature rated games and was allowed to do so. However, my parents explained to me the actions and scenarios in those games were not  condoned in this real world.  I understood that doing a Fatality and ripping someone's spine from their body would not be acceptable on the playground at school. These games are here to entertain us, not cause all this political b. s. Don't sell Mature rated games to under age kids, and parents... get your head out of your @ sses!

psn id: gingo.... games are just another form of entertainment like music or films, there is no proof to suggest tht games do any more harm than films so i think these losers should stop whining and concetrate of more important things

I am a police officer in North Carolina US and I love this game.  Some people are just too sensative about stuff like this.  It's a game with a MATURE rating.  Parents:  if you don't want your kids playing this game, get involved in their life a little more instead of scratching your head after they become criminals.  Like I said, the game is rated M for a reason...

PSN id: Dark_Knight96 i would probably love this game but i wish the could be a TURN OFF COP feature cuz cops in these games like GTA4 are SOOOOOOO ANNOYING like say u steal a car, or bash a innocent bystander's head in with a baseball bat, or shoot someone's head off with a rifle, or get max cops on u and u just want to fly peacefully, BUT NOOOO COPS COME AND SHOOT U FOR HAVING FUN, plz put TURN OFF COPS button

One thing I didn't understand in gta4 is the the  lack of AI of the cops, you steal a car or run over/agress someone the cops chase you but if your the victime of car jacking/getting hit by car/agressed the cops don't do a thing. I found that competely lame, is this the same in saints row 2?
