New changes to Home

Posted on January 31st, 2008 at 17:06 EDT

Has there ever been a more anticipated downloadable content piece than Home? It seems as though everyone and their mother is waiting for Home to finally be released to the general public. At least the wait is appearing to be for good reasons as Home has undergone several changes since its first announcement. As the Beta users continue to find issues and room for improvement, their suggestions did not fall on deaf ears as Sony has made some clear enhancements and improvements to Home.

Entrance points to such areas as the Bowling Alley or Theatre have been completely revamped in order to make them more recognizable to users. The Theatre itself has also been dropped down to the ground level as Beta users complained that the 12 second walk felt to initially get to the Theatre was far too long.

There will also apparently be eight to nine different apartments available to you at launch however premium apartment pricing has yet to be released. You’ll also be able to bring your virtual self onto a balcony in order to enjoy the scenery outside of your bachelor pad.

One of the premium rooms that will be made available is the Norwegian Lodge. This is a large wooden cabin that is much bigger than your standard apartment. It was mentioned that all of the current apartments are based in a realistic geographical location, however, apartments such as in the clouds and the like are potentially a possibility depending on user demand.

There have been no signs of a delay for Home and it is still on track for its Spring 2008 release. So we only have a little bit more time to wait.

In my opinion psn is better than XBL and I think many of us will agree. sure u guys have the in-game xmb but we are getting that and much more, this is only ps3's 2nd year 360 came out a year before cuase microsoft was to afraid to release it around ps3 time. you you guys had a lot of time to get prepared for the ps3 launch

@shaka, so your telling me that Nintendo didnt revolutionize gaming, youve got to be kidding me. For example, first system to have analog sticks, motion sensing in gaming, The first to make a hand held system. But your right, sony is way better than that. Sony just makes what is out now the best, thats why i love them. Microsoft had some things, for example, online gaming for consoles, even though dreamcast did it, microsoft pushed that over the top. But you can say whatever you want

So how exactly is this pricing thing going to work then ??? I dont have a credit card and I cant go to mummy and/or daddy to get them to pay for appartments and furnishings etc. I been looking forward to home for long time now, but I cant help but feel a little worried bout this "priceing", is there any facts regarding the issue available please, And if it is a case of paying through the psn then I realy hope the psn cards get a fecking move on.

why are people bashing on Twista? all he was doing was expressing his opinion in stating that Sony should put more foucus on PSN, persoanlly I agree. and as some one said, Home isnt for every one, but PSN is. there for PSN should be getting the most attention by Sony. Home looks good, but i rather have a stronger online service before a free application that isnt  needed.

There is nothing i home that you need that you'll haqve to pay for; clothing. standard apartments, furnishings, games all that is free. it's not second life it's simply a way to personalize your online experience better. Home will never really be a "Second life", because it's only there to enhance your Playstation 3 experience not create a NEW one.

First off...the Xbox 360 doesn't have an in game XMB...sony owns the XMB...it's short for Xross (cross) Media Bar...X(being a cross)MB.

Having said that, i do agree with twista...XBL is a better service at the moment, cross game chat, access to messages any time, see who is online, what they're doing and who they're playing with (to a certain extent).  They constantly add new themes and gamer pictures and there's access to your XBL account online to see what your mates are up to...something thats kinda handy when you're at work.

I love my PS3, but the online service is severly lacking and if it had been launched as a pay service i wouldn't have been paying for it.  Having said this, Sony have been listening and lets face it...if M$ have set the bar then Sony only have one option and thats to bypass it completely...I look forward to being able to use the little PS button on my controller to access the power of my PS3 in the middle of a game...

@Twista. XBL has been up and runinng since 2002. PSN since november 2006. So ofcourse XBL is going to have more features right now than PSN. Thats common sense. You've got to give PSN a few years to get polished. XBL may actually be better right now. But Sony is doing things to make PSN's future brighter than XBL's. Things such as free online service, home, and a VOD service are all things thats in the PS3's future. Except for the free online service, that we already have. But one thing I can say. Is that the PS3's XMB looks WAY BETTER than that ugly dashboard thing the 360 has going on.

To thouse who are waiting for in Game XBM , why the f... do u need it? listen or want movies or pictures while you are playing game? that if bulls..t, who needs that? for me its no big deal to quit the game. Or okay maybe give and acess to friends list and msg thats all I need.

Who cares about xbox live? Everyone concentrates on it so much the important facts are forgotten such as how sh!t the hardware is, they really didnt think about anything when they launched the xbox360, no hdd drive, still using standard dvds, not even their 'apparantly brilliant' hd-dvds, which is weird seeing as microsoft were backing this format from the start. Its as though the guys behind the scenes were downing JD and said 'i know, ive got it... whatever Sony come up with we'll copy with add-ons and such, great stuff.. to the pub now'

Dont worry peeps, PSN will continually improve. Stop drawing comparisons and instead offer suggestions on what would be cool features for the Playstation Network. Very much looking forward to Home. I'd pay for upmarket apartment tbh. Would also be cool if you could pay to have some sort of Clan Headquarters.

@dj_superior. The reason I want In-Game XMB (or at least some version of the XMB) is so that you can send messages, start chats, add friends that you are playing with, look at what other people are playing, play some music and maybe other things like looking up a walkthrough for the game your playing on the browser and maybe visiting the Store to download while you're playing an offline game.

@IONIXX...considering that I have a degree and an IQ that approaches cenius level (not my words...legitimate IQ test) i would say that I have more brains that a 12 year old pre-pubescent fanboy that "lives for Sony".  I love my PS3, i do, but i love gaming more...I play the games for the games...i buy multiplatform games on the console where they have the best features and support...example...Burnout and Smackdown...2 excellent games and better on the PS3.

However, having said all of this, XBL does have a superior service AT THIS TIME...I have no doubts that Sony will bring something spectacular to the table to compete with Microsoft but when push comes to shove XBL is a better service.  There are many things that frustrate me about it...the themes, the gamer pics and so on...all of these cost money...which is stupid...Sony on the other hand allow us to make our own themes and wallpapers...for free...

I know that we're going to have to agree to disagree because you, as a fanboy, wouldn't understand true gaming...the pleasure that comes from playing an amazingly crafted piece of software...i number among these games...Final Fantasy VII through to XII, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Folklore, Resistance, Motorstorm, COD4, Resident Evil 4, Gears of War, Forza 2, GTA3 through to San Andreas...and the list goes on and on...If you ever get the money or brains to save up and get yourself an Xbox360 and take off your blinkers you would see that a whole world of gaming awaits you that you're ignoring because it doesn't have a PS logo on it...grow up kid.

@JD-82 You know. Just because you claim you have a degree and a high IQ that approaches genius level, does not mean that you are a genious about the videogame world. My question is. Why if I already own a PS3, why do I need to take a step down and go out and buy an xbox360? Now sure I know different consoles has its exclusives. But the PS3's gaming library will continue to grow over time. Just like the PSone and PS2's library did. Now you can call me a PS fanboy all you want. Because the thing is, if I'm going to be willing to go out and pay 600 dollars for something. I'm defintely going to be a fan of it.

This is what will make Home and PS3 the best. Instead of Achievement points gather into a score like on 360, Achievements in games turn into Home currency to buy new furniture and clothes and whatnot for your character. Im sure they want to charge for some items but paying real money for different hairstyles and shirts would SUCK
