Max Payne theatrical trailer releasedRealdealgaming.com has an interesting theory on a possible release date for the rumored 40GB PlayStation 3 console.
According to the site, there are a few factors, that, when added up could quite possibly reveal a prime time for Sony to put out a budget PS3 later this year.
Sony has gone on the record in stating that there will be a large announcement in the middle of October, and with rampant rumors floating around the internet about a possible price drop of 40GB SKU, there is plenty to talk about.
If realdealgaming is correct, Sony will be announcing a 40GB version that could possibly come in two bundles - one promoting the system as a Blu-ray player, and one promoting the console as a gaming hub.
To support their theory, they call upon the Spider-Man 3 rumor, in which a 40GB system would come bundled with a Blu-ray copy of the movie for USD 400. This would be released on Oct. 30th, day and date with the DVD and Blu-Ray release of the movie. This bundle would be promoted as the ultimate Blu-ray bundle.
Realdealgaming has also predicted a "gaming" bundle, which will come with a copy of Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction. This is based on the fact that the game is being delayed for one week from Oct. 23rd to the 30th. Ordinarily this would not be a rumor to spark a theory on a new console, however, on the PlayStation Blog, the game has been announced as Gold status (meaning the game has reached manufacturing stages)
Recently, Greg Phillips, Line Producer at SCEA has stated, "The game is finished and will hit a store near you on October 30. As some of you know, this is a week later than the Oct 23rd date stated previously, but the extra wait will be worth it."
If realdealgaming is right in either or both of these predictions, then Sony will be well on its way to a great holiday season. These bundles would be a great way to sell PS3's as well as promote the systems strengths. Please note that these are only rumors. However, one final note to add, is that on BluRaySavings.com, there are four PS3 SKU's listed as qualifying Blu-ray players eligible for the 5 free BD deal. This, along with the recent report that a new model number has been added to the FCC could very well be the first pieces of confirming evidence on a new PS3 in the near future.
Be sure to read realdealgaming's full predictions here and check back for all the latest details.

hmm i love sony for makin ps3 cheaper but geezzz they are really giving awaya alot of
stuff I wonder how the 400 price tag will affect sales...
price cut is THE ONLY WAY TO VICTORY BELIVE IT OR NOT.
SONY YOU KEEP DROPPING THE PRISE TAG AND YOU SHOULD BE OK :)
and there you have it...... these rumors sound to strong to be myths both Spiderman and ratchet and clank are sony exclusives so what better way to sell both...... hmmmmm ......."ooooo pick me, pick me!"........ I know.... how bout putting it with a cheaper PS3 that can play both. Bingo, and now the sales increase. lol
this all makes complete since.
but just remember there are other things they could announce too, like maybe the 2.0 update.
but cant wait to hear about it though.
As things go though, I doubt the Spiderman 3 package will do Europe anything. Blu-Ray just isn't releasing enough substance right now. Fortunately for Sony's format war, neither is HD DVD.
So Ratchet and Clank would be my hopes. Perhaps a kids bundle. The funny thing is though, it's rumored that the 40gb model will have wifi and everything else(Don't listen to the bell ends that think Backwards compatibility is removed or anythin else) If this is true, the 40 gig model will be an excellent choice as many owners will be replacing the hard drive.
Therefore a much more significant price drop.
so how many different version of PS3 Sony gonna put on the market? It's not helping cosumers but only confuse them when is the right time to buy it. As an early adopter, I already regret that I bought PS3 when it came out. That gives me a lesson and I will never look at Sony the same way I used to.
Cant wait for R&C ftod its gonna be big in more than one way. I read in the playstation blog earlier today that they are almost maxing the 25GB capacity for this game.
plus these price drops will help A LOT, although why people think its expensive i dont know. If you spec up a 360 the same as a PS3 it actually costs a lot more
sounds pretty true to me. Too bad I already have one :( Oh well, it's been a great year so far!
Please Sony just drop the 80gb price! making a new SKU will only further create a income hole the same way the 20gb did! No one wants another 'tard pack.
As for the october announcment, - Probably be the PES Bundle in france. Mark my words.
These is so much confirmation in this article only, i don't know why Sony even denies it
Sounds Good, They need a 399 unit asap
Do they mean that the gaming system won't be able to play Blu-ray movies?Or is that just my misunderstanding.
psn id: gingo.... i cant wait to see wat sony announce but i hope it is this because this would make sales sky rocket in my opinion
lol another tard pack. kinda funny......but if this is the reason Rachet and Clank was delayed, and I know its only a week, that would be kinda weak tho. Who knows....if this means loads of people jumping on this deal that would be kinda cool in my book.
wow i really hope that they do this. it would be a grate deal! :)
They sould give a blu-ray remote with the Spiderman one and a extra controller with the gaming one...
Sony confusing the customer? To me, not really. All PS3's have HDD's and Blu-Ray player built in right? That's the meat and potatoes as far as I'm concerned. Most customers that buy into technology are oblivious to alot of features of their product anyway. If I can recall, I think Sony mentioned that that would in fact have different configurations of the PS3 to fit their different demographic before they push the 1st one out of the plant. They claimed that it would be more like a computer in that aspect...
what does SKU stand for?
wow those bundles would be awesome, and a good way to promote the ps3 and bluray.
this is good i guess.... i think the PS3 is worth much more.... a PC equevelant would be about $5,000.... so im not whining about the launch price, not at all, plus i have seperate PS2 hardware (everyone at launch does!)....
LOL 20->40->60->80->120gig. I hope they give me the later. :) Any who if they could find a middle ground for a $400-500 PS3 I think they are good. I I think this generation proved that another console with a $600 pricetag will not be done again due to the mixed reactions of the casual and hardcore gaming crowd. I'm glad Sony is taking step to at least provide various options of getting what you want, bang for the buck to be blunt. :)
This is a great idea. if sony wasn't planning this before they should be now...
I'm getting tired of all these 40 gig rumors... It's never going to happen.
ARGH! THERE IS NO NEED FOR A 40GB UNIT!!! We don't need to dumb down our console for some mindless idiots that can't see the value. Let them play their 360s. They will realize soon enough what a few more dollars gets them.
Though I don't agree with Sony making a 40GB unit, at least they are going about it the right way. I agree with Romeo, they should add a remote with the Blu-ray and controller with the gaming version.
a $400 price tag will definately help sales in my book. especially how 40 gb is still an ample amount. my friend has hundreds of pics(porn moslty, lol) and tons of CDs burned on his ps3(60gb) and he is at like, 35ish gigs. he also has the huge oblivion save file, resistance, FEAR, motorstorm.....a couple demos....a couple movies. yeah....$400 for the sacrifice of 20 gigs is a good deal to me. all sony has to do is get alot more good games and they'll own the competition. ps3 ftw
A 40GB model would be a big mistake. A gimped (less USB ports etc...) 40GB model would be a complete disaster. Sony should focus on the 80GB model that it has just introduced.
Think about it...Xbox 360 will get the 65nm CPU soon and instantly solves the heating problem and gains another price advantage. If Sony introduces another SKU with 40GB at $399 Microsoft will offer a 80GB model at the same price point (or less). For dumb shoppers (thats the majority) they will see 40GB brand X at $399 and 80GB brand Y at $399 and choose brand Y... IE: 40GB is too low end and a "gimped" 40GB model will worry shoppers even more.
I can see the confused faces of customers as they speak to the guy at the video game store who explains that one PS3 has hardware backward compatibility whilst the budget one has only emulation.... Now one model has these four USB ports whilst this model gives you only two USB ports (customer thinks...do I need these? should I have more? Oh my god I dont know what to buy).... Then the sales man says this PS3 has has a big 80GB hard drive and the budget PS3 has 40GB ... or another choice is buy a Xbox 360 - it has the larger 80GB hard drive comes with three USB ports and is the same price as the budget PS3.... They are even throwing in a $20 discount voucher across there huge selection of games....much bigger than the PS3 Blah blah blah
....Oh yes that sounds better... Yes, I best buy lttle Bobby one of those for Christmas...
At the same time, releasing a new SKU increases Sony's costs for distribution as more inventory will have to be allocated into stores... Microsoft has been baiting Sony to make this move. It will be a slaughter. Dont do it Sony - hit hard with the 80GB model and put back backward compatibility across all models.
xbox 360 will not attract non gamers, it doesn't have the potential sonys PS3 has so why is everyone thinking gaming only. there ae people shopping for blu ray and hd dvd players as well. so it shoud be cheap in that sense.
