Nyko introduces Rock Band/Guitar Hero peripheral

Posted on January 9th, 2008 at 11:59 EDT

First Harmonix claimed their music simulation title, Rock Band, was built on an open platform and could work well with any guitar peripheral on the market. Soon after, Activision quickly hit back stating that Harmonix was to blame for the incompatibility of the Rock Band & Guitar Hero guitars in either game. To date, both companies have yet to come to an agreement on either game’s compatibility issues; enter Nyko, who is now hoping to capitalize on their stubbornness.

Debuting at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nyko introduced the latest version of the Wireless Frontman guitar that will be available for the 360 and PS3 and WILL be compatible with both Rock Band & Guitar Hero III.

The new Frontman will be available this March and will be wireless via a USB dongle that will have a switch for either Rock Band or Guitar Hero that must be set before starting the game.

This new guitar from Nyko is said to have all the features from Activision's and Harmonix's guitars and will apparently go up to 80 hours (for those slightly longer sessions of rockin') of continuous game play on just three AA batteries.

Nyko seems to have got the right formula down packed; however, we are curious as to why Activision and Harmonix have taken so long to resolve the issue after all this time. If nothing else, Nyko’s efforts have proved that the situation has nothing to do with any unspecified technical barrier.

its taken so long because both of them think they have the better title and well its competition, why help competition by having interworking peripheral's!!

Good for them. Now they just need a bluetooth version and it will be all good.

and i guarentee that once both of them have their own guitars availible for sale indivisually they will magically come up with a patch for them to be able to work with each other. After most people have already bout the guitars already.

I still don't see why there aren't guitars with rechargeable batteries.  I think everything wireless should have rechargeables to keep batter waste down.

Rechargeable batteries cost more and just increse the cost of production. you can always get a pack of 4 recharable batteries with a charger for the 20 bucks they would have tacked onto the price.

Anyway the picks of seen of it seem a little boring. there are no solo buttons or selector switch and by the time they come out the official ones will be here.

Excellent business move for them.  I wonder what the price point will be?

The ONLY reason GHIII and Rock Band guitars are incompatible is because Activision being the EXTREMELY GREEDY and LOUSY developer and publisher they are, wanted consessions(don't know if i spelt that right) for using their lousy peripherals.

I agree with Gingo on 3rd party periphs, but I am glad they did this.  It gives us the opportunity for both worlds.  Propriety (pardon my spelling) parts ****.
