Following Sony’s big month in September, the newly released NPD Group data shows the PlayStation 3 has dropped from the top spot of hardware sales. With the price drop, Sony pushed 491,800 PS3s in September, resulting in an astounding 134% increase. In October, Sony came in third place with 320,600 PS3s sold.
The Wii, with its late September price drop, was the only console to sustain an upward movement with some 506,900 units sold in October. The Xbox 360 sold 249,700 units, while the PSP sold 174.600.
Here’s the official hardware breakdown:
* Wii - 506,900
* Nintendo DS - 457,600
* PlayStation 3 - 320,600
* Xbox 360 - 249,700
* PSP - 174,600
* PlayStation 2 - 117,800
Hardware sales in the US were down some 23% compared to October 2008 with overall video game sales down 19% from last year at this time. There is good news, however.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier said, “The video games industry suffered another decline this month as compared to last October. This is the third best October on record, behind October 2007 and October 2008.”

lol wii is 199$ now, even more casual people are buying it now, also with the new wii fit plus, Casual people can casually workout, as many casual times as they casually want.
I have a wii and I got so tired of waiting for a new mario game that I bought myself my first non-nintendo home console, and I'm glad I did as Nintendo was starving my appetite for gaming with their little casual and party games. Though, New Super Mario Bros Wii looks promising :D

How is the wii even selling? It's garbage compared to the PS3 and 360, and doesn't cost much less. Of course the wii still is targeting that casual audience... No true gamer would buy a wii over a PS3 or 360 with the prices the way they are now. The way they said the PS3 was in 3rd made me think that the 360 was outselling it again (which I was astonished at). PSU please try to make better names for your articles... How about "PS3 outsells the 360 again." Not that I actually care, because I'm too busy with real life, and trying to find some time to play all these stunning games I've been buying.

@11 they said the same thing about the DS. Nintendo is not to be underestimated this gen. 360, good show. PS3 is definitely doing it's thing at the right pricepoint. My guess is Sony will think twice about launching a system above the $400 mark.
This really proves that gaming is as strong as it's ever been, There is no Dreamcast this generation, so some people need to just quit hatin and start lovin.

Bear in mind this is XBox strongland, everywhere else, PS3 is killing everything in sales (PS3 is way ahead in total sales in Euope, despite Microsofts 18month headstart)>
Microsoft passed 10m Euro sales yesterday (obviously many of these will be RROD and ban replacements)
Sony passed 10m Euro sales back in August. Clearly NPD does not paint a representative global picture.

@6 But the Elite doesn't drive 360 sales, "dummy". The cheaper ones do. Not everyone is like your friends or thinks like you do. When parents looked at the 360 for Christmas 2007 and 2008, they got the Arcade version for their kids. That's why I always said it was still amazing that the PS3 sold as well as it did being $400 and $500. But now the console that everyone perceived as being "the best, but too expensive" (whether it was true or not) is within reach...so they're buying it. Simple.

Yeah finally. I'm tired of hearing xboxers talk about how they are the dominant console. Everyone knows that it doesn't matter if xbox dominated the first 4 or 5 years-- only matters whos on top the last year or two.

@25
...because no matter what else Sony did, they never (completely) forgot the hardcore gamer who really drives the industry. Do they make crazy decisions with the price points? Absolutely. I for one always thought it was worth it with they exception of the PS3's first price of $600. I bought it, but I was so nervous about Blu-Ray back then.
