PS3 Alone in the Dark delay explained

Posted on May 29th, 2008 at 07:43 EDT

Alone in the Dark's Senior Producer has said that the reason why the PlayStation 3 version of the upcoming Survival Horror title will arrive later than its Xbox 360 counterpart is due to the fact the game is "not performing" as well as expected.

Speaking with Videogamer.com, Atari’s Nour Polloni commented, “There's no firm date yet but what we can say is that it's coming out this year. In terms of why it's coming out later, we have the full game running on PS3 and all the features, no problem. The thing is it's not performing as well on PS3 as we hope it is in terms of frame rate and all that.”

“We didn't want it to come out and have less of an experience for the PS3 gamer. We wanted to tweak that up and make sure they get the best experience on PS3 as much as possible,” added Polloni.

Polloni also commented on the hardships faced with multiformat development, noting, "It's not hard if you do a PS3 specific game. It's hard when you try to have it global multi-platform. That's when it's hard."

In this case, developer Eden Games initially started on the PC version of the game, before working on the Xbox 360 release, and finally, the PS3.

She also noted that the PS3 version would contain “the same content" as its Xbox 360 counterpart.

Stay tuned.

Not a huge surprise.  They need to start figuring out how to better manage these projects.  That obviously means designing on PS3 first, so hopefully more devs get the picture sooner rather than later.  Frankly a little delay doesn't bother me if they get the game working RIGHT.

@ jphuff:

True.  Developers should take note of those that have taken an alternate route to the 'Develop on 360 first and port to PS3' method.  It should be apparent now to devs that this just doesn't work out for a great experience on the multiplatform front for multiple consoles, specifically, PS3 and 360 owners.  Critierion (Burnout Paradise) lead with the PS3 and produced an identical game across both platforms, Capcom (Devil May Cry 4) lead on the PC and ported to PS3 and 360 and tweaked each accordingly from there making for an identical looking game and Infinity Ward (Call of Duty 4) developed from the ground up for each specific platform and released an identical game.

Those 3 ways are what's best for everyone but it seems some developers like making things hard for them and losing face.

Oh come on, Inifinity Ward proved it ain't that much of a labour if you get team into groups and assign them to a specific console. And to keep us waiting til the end of the year and no extras is just a shame, it's not our fault they can't manage multitasking.

psn id: gingo.... well at least they care about giving us a good game for our money, it might take longer but at least they dont give us an inferior game just so they can get it out on time

lol you say that gingo but how many times have we heard it, lol just look at haze they really spent a lot of the extra dev time on the game didnt they. That said i do feel it will turn out good as eden games usually at pretty top notch so we'll have to w8 and see.

Thats what we have known for a long time. So its a PC to 360 to PS3 port. Geeze no wonder.

I don't want games equal to the XBox versions. I want games BETTER then the Xbox version. Isn't the PS3 supposed to be a home super-computer? I'm getting tired of this. The excuse "devs must learn how to use the hardware" is starting to get old. I don't recall a single game that actually looks better on the PS3. Sorry to say this, but it's time to admit that the PS3 = XBox (in games).

Like i always say i slow to hit shelf game is better then one that is rushed case in point all movie games that are rushed out in less then a year to come out with the movie cant think of one that was ever great.

screw them, no same date release = no purchase. I will just download the pc version via torrent, learn to do it the right way, set it on PS3 first before "porting" to others.

u lot would be complaining if the 360 ws delayed you would praise the devs for doin better on the ps3. they are good devs, its a good game and we would want this game to be equal to the other formats.

Ryoma-

We WOULD indeed be complaining about a delay for the 360...at least those of us who have one.  That's not the point however and this isn't the place to start a PS3 vs. 360 fan war.  The point is that developers have known for quite some time that they will be developing for at least 2 high def consoles, the 360 and PS3.  There may be challenges and new things to learn seeing that the PS3 is newer and has such a different architecture, but this is the developers BUSINESS.  They should do a better job of planning their projects and addressing issues that arise.  After all, it's not like the PS3 came out last month.

Now, this game may have started development before it was widely known how much easier it was to develop simultaneously with other versions or to lead on the PS3 and THEN code over to other platforms.  However, everyone is complaining simply because the developers didn't learn and apply this lesson in time.  No matter how you slice it, it's a failure of their project management skills.  That's all.  Still, I like Gingo and others would rather that the game is delayed a bit in order to work properly rather than see it rushed out and ship at the same time, yet be inferior.  As other titles have demonstrated, there's no reason for the PS3 versions NOT to be equal to or better than their counterparts.

silent hill: homecoming and siren: blood curse looks waaaaay better. but this could turn out well as long as the entire game isn't all about setting things on fire. they sure make it seem that way :)

If they aren't going to give extra content, then they better give a price drop.  This game looks amazing but dropping a game half a year after everyone else for the same price is crapping on the gamers.

Is this still coming out later this year and I thought it had been confirmed that PlayStation 3 will have extra content, I guess that was only a rumor....
