PS3 will outpace PS2's lifecycle, says SCEE boss

Sony Europe chief Andrew House has said that the platform holder believes the PlayStation 3 will ‘significantly outpace’ its predecessor’s lifecycle at retail.
Speaking with EDGE magazine (via CVG), House asserted his belief that PS3’s vast array of functions will ensure the machine enjoys a healthy lifecycle on store shelves, while admitting the company is still unable to predict when PS2 will die out as it continues to shift units in its tenth year on the market.
“If you look at the PS2, still in some markets going very strong, especially in North America in its tenth year on the market, we still can't predict where that lifecycle will end," he said.
"I have a theory that with successive generations, and with more value added and built into the console in terms of experience - and let's not forget that the PS2 really didn't offer a tremendously robust network experience - that what you effectively do is potentially lengthen that lifecycle more and more as you get to the next iteration.”
Sony has previously said that it is committed to PS3 for the long term, believing the platform will remain in the shops for at least a decade.

The PS3 has barely got into its stride yet. As hardware becomes more sophisticated it needs a longer lifecycle to justify the cost of developing it. I can see a new XBox in maybe 2 or 3 years, but I doubt that even the next Xbox would be significantly better than the PS3. I predict that the PS3 will sell at least 50% to 100% more than the 360 over its lifecycle because it will be around for 3 - 5 years after the 360 has bit the dust. Just look at PS2 Vs original XBox. Sony know what they are doing. Except when it comes to Update 3.0, put the XMB back the way it was!!

Interesting, I have complete faith in Sony, but I've always had one query, and now seems as good a time as any to put it forward, although it's way off topic:
When the PS4 does finally come out, which is inevitable, regardless of the PS3's life cycle, what's going to happen to the Trophy support? Will Trophies/Trophy Cards carry over to the PS4, or will dedicated Trophy Addicts have to start their collection all over again. I'm not a Trophy Whore by any means, although I do enjoy collecting the various Trophies across the great titles I have, but I really don't understand how they can address this matter. Carrying Trophies over to the next generation doesn't seem right, and I don't see how they'll be able to combine last-gen games and Trophies with the next, but making dedicated gamers as myself start again from scratch with a whole new generation of games doesn't seem fair knowing that the Trophies previously acc*mulated will no longer exist, thus making them pointless, and the player in question has nothing to show for his efforts.
It's likely that no-one else is particularly bothered by this, as there are many Trophy-haters out there that are gonna crap all over my dilemma and merely complain, and I don't want to sound like a kill-joy worrying about the next generation when the current one's still in its early days because I can assure you, I'm not, but the time will inevitably come where something has to happen, so I'd be grateful if anyone can shed some light on this matter. Thank you.
Also, it sucks that PSU have banned words such as acc*mulated and circ*mstance because of a certain three consecutive letters near the middle. This really needs to be sorted out, as many times I've had the "Your comment contained X banned words" message, resulting in me skimming through my post attempting to work out what the problem is. This needs to be fixed.

@6
It originally started as a simple one-sentence query, but fearing it was too vague and people would simply ignore it, I decided to expand and clarify it, accidentally making it an excessively long paragraph. I have recently been writing a lot of incredibly long explanatory comments, so now nothing I say seems particularly over-written to me, at least not in comparison to what I've recently been used to...
Then, anticipating people will complain, I added an additional paragrah that'd reduce the likeliness of this occurring. Then of course, I had to read through it again and edit it because PSU had banned acc*mulated, hence the final paragraph. Sorry if I bored you, but no, I did not right a 5-page book on Trophy Support... I wrote an overly-extended sentence that, like this, seems to have become a lot more of a complex mess than it should have/was originally expected to be. Lol.

This makes total sense. The more capable you make a piece of hardware, the longer it remains viable and valuable. We may not see a successor to Blu-ray for a LONG time, and PS3 is capable of graphics and games we could only dream of just a few years ago. It's well designed, well thought out, user upgradeable and reliable. The PS4 isn't going to make the 3 seem like a PS2 in comparison, so I can easily see the PS3 lasting more than a decade.

@1 - Yes we will see about that.
PS2 has outpaced the PS1. PS2 is still selling now. Strongly for a 10 year old console.
So yes, you will see. I on the other hand, expected this to happen.
The PS3 will still be selling many units well into the next gen of consoles. In fact, do not be surprised to see the PS3 competing against the next XBOX with the follow up to the PS3 coming around 18 months later than Microsoft's next machine.

..think I can trade in House's bragging rights for:
1. Semi mandatory invitation system ala WipeoutHD
2. Vidzone, movie store, demoscene, in all SCEE countries
3. Ps2 software emulation (just order the project, House. It will lengthen the lifespan of the ps2 titles for yonks)
4. Ps1 software emulation without the slow- downs
5. Ps1 titles compatible with the psp
6. ps2 titles for download.
7. Voice chat
8. Message facility that's put together with perhaps some thought.
9. "Switching interface" with the ps- button that makes sense, specially with messaging.
10. Available services - before they are advertised for.
No? Then you can shut it, House: It's not worth anything to me.

The answer lies in HDTV adoption on the worldwide market
The expansive lineup of AAA titles.
The success of BluRay over competing formats.
The delta of PS3s success is it's capability to reach mass market price at the time that the mass market begins adopting HD entertainment (Audio as well as video, of course). Another way to look at it is to look at PS2s sales trends after the launch of next generation systems. Even in the face of the Wii being designed and amrketed towards the casual gamer base that carried the PS2 to success, the more core gamers still showed up for the PS2 Slim.
Fast forward the track a little bit to a time when Gran Turismo 5 will be a "Greatest Hits" title at $20 and FFXIII hype makes way for XV and FF9 or 8 will be on the PSN as a retro downloadable game.. A time when PS3 will be $200 or even $150.. Some people seem to think a 720 or PS4 is just beyond the horizon, but the developers themselves are having to pour more resources than ever to make these HD games. People just don't have HDTVs yet in traditonal Sony markets not to mention the new expansion into South America.
You can bet against the PS3, but you will lose and you will lose big. For all the hype and buzz the console wars receive and some people's doubting the man, there is exactly 0% reason to do so. Only a fool gets caught up in the hype.

Its all about the amount of time and energy they want to put into producing games. Better hardware may bring better visuals. But production costs will increase. Developers may not want to go into that territory so soon. How much better will graphics become anyway? The only thing that may warrant a new system is even higher resolution tvs than can produce more than 1920 x 1080.

LOL @2 and 19, I can't STAND the new update either. I guess if they want to make the system last they better start sorting out these stupid little updates as well. Not sure if anyone knows this, but it's messed up Time Crisis 4 (at least that's what a friend told me that has the game). So if this is true along with all the other glitches I wish they would just erase what they did an put the information board back in so I can shut the D**N thing off!!! I'd bet that that's where all the problems are coming from

@5 :
Trophies are stored on Sony's Servers. I would imagine that you sync your trophies before you retire your PS3, and login to PSN again with your PS4 and download all your trophies (sync). Have you looked at the MMOS leaderboards? As of yesterday the #1 person in the world had 60-some platinums. There would be blood in the streets if sony did not carry over trophies for me, and that's with a mere 12 plats.

This isn't the PS2's 10th year anywhere but Japan... It's still the PS2's 9th year everywhere else. Still got a couple more months before the PS2 enters its 10th year in every region. And "in" its 10th year means it hasn't REACHED 10 years yet (once it reaches its 10th year, it will be in its 11th year) so that's still a bit deceptive.
Aside from that bit, I'd be happy if the PS3 lasted a long time... Just imagine what people will put out of it once they have the chance to learn it well...
@iSHENANIGANS What are you going on about? And NO ONE should follow in Activision's steps... They've proven themselves to be pretty worthless (this doesn't count some of the companies they own, like Infinity Ward, but simply Activision itself) recently.

Thanks.
That's what I thought, Sony wants players to be connected to their PSN IDs, carrying them across all Sony products. I would therefore assume that the same PSN IDs will be used for the next generation. However, I don't get how Sony will go about making the transition, as combining some of the "ancient" Trophies with the newer ones would just feel awkward.
Regardless, there's nothing to worry about, I'm not particularly bothered with what Sony decide to do, it's just something that puzzled me. I'm still unsure on what Sony plan on doing, but I suppose it's not really one of their problems right now.
