Sony’s PlayStation Portable has continued to maintain its lead in the Japanese hardware battle for another week running, according to the latest data from Media Create.
The handheld console sold 85,271 units for the week ended April 14, outselling its nearest rival, the Nintendo DS, which shifted just north of 47,000 units during the same period.
Meanwhile, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 sales were down from the previous week, selling 8,232 and 6,834 units each, respectively, though both once again surpassed Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which managed only 1,147 units.
For a full round up of the Japanese hardware charts, see below.
PSP - 85,721

PS2 still owning 360!
I can get hold of a second hand PSP-1000 for cheap. Is it worth paying the extra to buy the PSP-2000? (Money is tight)
@Doylah - Thank-you for your advice. I also have a PS3. Will the older PSP be able to do everything the newer one can do with the PS3?
Yes jicaley , just need to keep updating firmware good luck mate
ive got the old psp still working since launch day:P i use it wen im downstairs and on holiday for remote play that was a great idea by sony but i dunno if i shud re invest in the new one.....?
sad to see the ps3 so far behind the wii, soon there will be more wii consoles in japan than people, lol!
@jicaley - Yeah, the PSP1000 is capable of everything the PSP2000 is minus these things: Skype (the VOIP phone service newly announced for PSP) and Video output (to a TV).
But beside that it's the same machine in terms of features.
To everyone who has answered my questions, THANK-YOU! : )
@jicaley
In some games the loading is much much better. IMO if you can pull the money it is worth it because of the performance and the small adjustments to the buttons.
I think the reason PSP is so popular is because, You can watch movies, Listen to music, Play games and surf the web. And its the perfect thing to have when you travel. longer batery life than a Laptop.
Sounds about right, seeing as how almost every japanese person owns a DS. Same thing could happen with the Wii and PS3. But if they want to end the Wii's onslaught over there now, release more RPGs! Get FF13 out there, or Legend of Dragoon HD remix or part 2, Dragon Quest is bigger than the FF series... get that, too!
@jicaley - Someone recently bought me a used PSP and at first I was kinda being picky thinking "I wish they woulda gave me the PSP slim" but then after using it, I can truly say that I'm happy with it. Even if it's heavier, I like the feel of it more than the slim, and plus the PSP slim is always full of fingerprints. It may look beautiful out the box but then it looks like s*it after you touch it. It's really hard to keep clean. The PSP 1000 works just fine.
Thanks again for the further info people : )
I'm still always surprised by wii and ds numbers. I mean you would think by now all of japan would have these items (especially the DS since its now in its second iteration!)
i don't know what people see about the wii but my friend has one and it starts collecting dust. i used 2 be nintendo fan way back when super NES came out but i'm all sony now. GROWWWWWWWWWWW uPPPPP!!!
The demand for the Wii and DS has to run out eventually. It looks like the DS is sliding down that slope.
i guess everyone in japan finally has about 6 DS's and 4 Wii's so the sales are going down XD.
Wow PS3 sales are under 10,000 which is a bit depressing
