This February will be a critical month for the PlayStation 3 as Killzone 2 will finally reach the hands of anxious gamers world wide. To learn more before the title's upcoming release, we interviewed Guerrilla Games game director Mathijs de Jonge.

- - - - - - - - -

PSU: With review copies of Killzone 2 already hitting media outlets, what are you guys working on until the game’s retail release?

Mathijs de Jonge : Currently the game is being thoroughly tested and we are fixing the last remaining bugs. On a more creative side we’re working hard on some really cool downloadable content and of course we’re preparing for the next game.

PSU: Last August, it was rumored that Killzone 2 would feature some form of cooperative support, though no details were given on when it would be added and how many players could play together. What can you tell us about the co-op mode, and do you have any estimates on when it will be released?

MdJ : Currently there are no plans for co-op in Killzone 2, technically it would be quite difficult to implement it for the story mode as for example the mission sections are loaded in seamlessly – no loading screens , and that would cause issues with teleporting players. Even without co-op it’s still a big game and gamers will have plenty to sink their teeth into.

PSU: Other than the ISA tank, what vehicles will players get to use in the game? Also, will any of these vehicles be supported in online multiplayer?

MdJ : There is a very cool vehicle that also featured as a Boss character in Killzone: Liberation. Whether online multiplayer will have vehicles is something we’re investigating.

PSU: What are some features and ideas you guys at Guerrilla have planned for Home? When can we expect to see the Killzone 2 space go live?

MdJ : Home is something we are looking into but we have nothing to report on this just yet.

PSU: Are there plans to release a Killzone 2 demo on the PSN before or after the game’s release?

MdJ : Yes, a playable single-player demo is in the works and will be released prior to launch.

PSU: The last weapons revealed included the bolt gun and flamethrower. Are there any other weapons yet to be revealed? And will the knife make it into multiplayer in the final version of the game?

MdJ : Oh yes there’s another very powerful weapon, but I can’t talk about it yet.

PSU: Will the Helgast attack dogs from Killzone: Liberation make a return in Killzone 2? Lots of readers are dying to know...

MdJ : No sorry, they don’t. There are other creatures though, like aggressive spiders that chase anything that gets near, be it the player, your allies or even the Helghast. These creatures live on polluted soil which has given them a very vicious attack. Get bitten, and they release a couple of thousands of volts.

PSU: In December, IGN’s Jeff Haynes stated that Killzone 2 was using only about 60% of the PS3’s SPU’s. Has that changed since then, and what are your thoughts on pushing the PS3’s limits in the future?

MdJ : To be honest I don’t know who said Killzone 2 only uses 60% of the SPUs as that’s simply not true. It all depends on what is happening at a certain moment in the game. In some (rare) cases when there isn’t much action going on the game doesn’t require all the SPUs to run at full speed, but there are plenty of combat heavy situations where we max out on all SPUs and run at 100%.

PSU: After the release of Killzone 2, what’s next for Guerrilla? Have you started concepts for Killzone 3 or thought about doing another PSP title?

MdJ : Unfortunately we can’t comment on any future plans at the moment…our total focus right now is on getting Killzone 2 finalized.

Umm, This is news but I dont know if its good news. I had totally planned on having coop in killzone 2. I kind of thought it would be online only just like Resistance, but no coop sux. I am starting the get the feeling this game (although beautiful) might be a let down.

I wonder why they have implemented those weird spiders but no attack dogs? I mean it's surely not a problem from the tehnical point of view...maybe the just didn't wanted to but I'm sure everyone would have embraced the idea of attack dogs in KZ2

psn id: gingo... i cant wait for killzone 2, co-op or not, there is no reason for the game to definitely have co-op so i dont see why they would add it

co-op isnt what every game needs to make it that extra better to be honest in aspect it seems the game was focused on the single player & online modes plus the features that will be included in it.  the game looks great with or with out co-op i dont see the really big fuss,  so im not to botherd about co-op im just glad the game is on its way for release.

    good interview PSU..

I was really anxious to know more about the possibility of playable vehicles in multiplayer and whether there really was a co-op patch being made or not.

It's amazing to see a game given such care these days. Perhaps all games should be held 3 months after they're finished so that they can be run over with a fine-tooth comb and all the bugs fixed. Still a month until it's released.... hard to wait that long.

  19. Oatmeal | NEJI64

    • 5:48pm GMT - January 13th, 2009

a game like this dont need co-op the storyline and muliplayer is good enough. you wont co-op play resistance 2 other then that this game is going to be a killer.

    • 6:24pm GMT - January 13th, 2009

The reasons for no co op are right there. Want load times, lag, people dropping out, yes?. Dont be fools moaning about this and about that. The online is s..t hot if you want to play with your mates.

  21. svtschmidt

    • 7:16pm GMT - January 13th, 2009

so there is no co-op and no dogs. big flipping deal. game looks awesome. as a pessimist myself i never thought i would say this, but "quit being so negative." the game will rock. it will all be ok.

    • 9:27pm GMT - January 13th, 2009

yeh guys i mean so you have a bad bit of news on the most hyped-up, looked-foward-to game of 2009. one little bit of bad news issnt going to make the game a complete and utter failure that nobody will ever play again because there is no co op or dogs.

  27. dirtypajamas

    • 10:43pm GMT - January 13th, 2009

Co-op is a nice thing to have. It actually adds gets people to buy a game console. All of you must not have face to face contact or probably no friends.

  28. PROTOTYPE

    • 11:31pm GMT - January 13th, 2009

i wanna know if the knife will make it into multiplayer and also if the cover system will make it into multiplayer. Neither were in the beta when I played so I hope they put them in.

  29. Evan007 | Evan007

    • 12:09am GMT - January 14th, 2009

I think the question about the PSN demo was misunderstood...I don't think he heard the "on PSN" part of the question. If you want to know why there's no co-op listen to the PSnation podcast episode 52. they interviewed someone at geurilla and he explained in full why they couldn't do co-op.

  30. Thor_0889

    • 12:21am GMT - January 14th, 2009

the problem with games now is not enough focus on story and single player and too much on multiplayer and coop. this game is gunna be sweet. great storyline and this might be the one game to get me addicted to multiplayer. i cant wait to get it

To all those people whining about co-op, yes that would be great right at launch....to the hardcore fans of Killone since day one,yes I am one, remember Killzone Liberation. It was released and later on a completly new level and online multiplayer....these guys are commited to this game and I feel there will be even more to come for this game and series...I know for me....I can't wait!!!

    @ A-eQuitas

In the review of Killzone 2 by PSM they say that the games controls have different layouts, layout 2 being the same as CoD4.

    @ Dragoonlord

A demo is to be launched before release but only to those who pre-order from gamestop, the public demo is coming out after the release date.
