Payton: MGS4 is a "miracle"

Speaking to 1UP, former game producer Ryan Payton has described Metal Gear Solid 4 as "nothing short of a miracle." Kojima Productions, it seems, had not planned to continue the Metal Gear Solid storyline past the third iteration.
"The stories of MGS2 and MGS3 were truly written without any backup measures if the series continued, leaving dozens of confusing and unexplained plot elements in the wake," Payton explained. "The fact that we were able to tie up all the loose ends with MGS4 was nothing short of a miracle."
There were also a few nods in the direction of the still-largely-hypothetical Metal Gear Solid 5. "Hideo wants a younger staff member to take over the director role on the next MGS title, with him overseeing the project as producer," Payton revealed, "But I think I can speak for all my coworkers that every time Hideo talks about 'MGS5' to the press, we're just as curious about what it could be."
Hit the jump for the full interview - just be prepared for some king-sized plot spoilers. Apparently, Payton once received a 2,000 word account of his own execution from a fan incensed by the decision to cast Pat Zimmerman as Liquid Ocelot. Scary stuff, this fan service business.

Not having brought the game yet I can only say that I will do, as soon as I've got the money to do so!

I really would like a MGS game with Gray Fox as the main character explaining the events before MGS. It would really be great

A game where we could play as Grey Fox for the most part would be very interesting! We could learn about the whole past of this shadowy character. Though I fear it may get a bit like a Resident Evil game, with all the character swappin crap... I trust Kojima!

This game was EPIC. if they remake a number 5, it will be the MSX games reborn on the ps3. snakes revenge no way, it's not even in the story line. but, if they do MGS5 i would be so excited!!!

MGS4 is still one of my favorite games, right next to classics that will never be replaced. Also Hideo Kojima and his team are masters at what they did. I did not see any slowdowns either on the hardware, including big mamas bike scene and the mech scene. 0 frame issues, never saw it skip or anything. Incredible

If Hideo wants a younger staff member to be director, with him watching over the game as a director the game will be amazing still. I'm happy to hear that Metal Gear is not over and is likely to continue for a long time.

yea MGS4 is the game of the year just the beginng alone was amazing. the part when the frogs get introduce was hot. TRUELY IF YOU DID NOT BUY MGS4 YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON A MASTERPIECE. Sony should make MG a movie i can imagen what MGRAY would look like if Octomus Prime look truly stunning in the movies.

ohh yea mgs 5 would definitely be a next-hit for the ps3 in the next few years especially after mgs 4,if they made a story in there that solid snake died it would suck, but would definitely make the mgs 5 saga story very interesting,or i think, but i definitely want to keep playing metal gear solid, its one of the most amazing games that was ever invented.

The title of this article was a tad misleading, I think we all agree that MGS4 IS a miracle, but not because they tied up a bunch of loose ends, but because the game itself is an Epic Win and a miracle of modern gaming.
