Phil Harrison: Developer's Face Format Choice

Posted on July 26th, 2007 at 08:20 EDT

In a recent statement, Phil Harrison clearly expressed his feelings on multi-platform ports. Harrison says easy multi-platform ports are a thing of the past.

Sony’s Head of Worldwide Studios has said that the choice developers face when deciding what hardware formats to support is more difficult than before.

“Development and support for a format is very important yes, and the story is very different these days to how it was with older formats,” he stated. “In the past you could pay a million dollars for a PS2 game and get a $50,000 Xbox port thrown in. Those days are gone. Developers have to pick their formats much more carefully. This is partly because of the huge cost of development. But it’s not just a financial consideration. It’s about strategic marketing and the online consumer. It’s about how a game fits its format."

This is bad because it cost more to make games on the PS3 :(

At this time it does, but remember Sony is nor unning a sprint, for them this is a marathon. We all know that even if it's harder (ie. costs more) to develop for the PS3 it will eventually pan out. And there are always lots of people who prefer quality over quantity, so the sales will keep raising and soon Microsoft will be playing an impossible catch-up.

PS3 is the better choice to develop for first. Because any other platform ported to will look good although not better. Besides the PS3 development cost is coming down since more SDK's are being churned out.

I believe that any good developer that isn't running around with dollars stuck in his eyeballs will see the clear choice and will choose the right platform P.S. The new look is great PSU good job

Won't be a matter of time before we start seeing Pepsi advertisements in games, or any other consumer products in game. Development for next gen gaming software runs in the multi-millions, not just for PS3. Competition is getting more fierce as developers try to out due on another and create the next blockbuster hits.

This is good. I am tired of ports that do not take full advantage of a systems ability. I own multiple consoles and I would like to see more console specific exclusives for all three. Bring the quality back!

it'll be fine. after epic publishes UT3 on the ps3, the UE3 which is widely licensed will be ps3 compatible. i wouldn't be surpirsed if developers are minimising resources of game production right now until epic get's it right. (note: even UE3 for the 360 is having difficulty, epic's sluggishness really.)

I do wish developers would choose a platform a go with it because the ported games usually suffer in quality.
