Today, Sony released the first video of PlayTV in action on the PlayStation 3 in a promotional advertisement. PlayTV will allow PlayStation 3 owners, if they buy the required add on, to watch and record live TV. You will be able to watch TV in both Standard Definition and High Definition.

PlayTV will also feature an Electronic Program Guide, which will show you what is on TV up to seven days ahead in certain countries.

This does look pretty simple; and you can even watch live TV on your PlayStation Portable.

PlayTV was first announced at the Game Convention in Leipzig last Summer, along with a possible early 2008 release in UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. The other countries in Europe would follow throughout the year.

Just a week ago UK retailer Play.com listed PlayTV on their website, with a release date of March 28th. The price was going to be £99.99. However, a few hours later the item release date and price were removed from the website. Sony is yet to make a comment on the release date and price point. Up till now PlayTV has only been announced for Europe. We will keep you up to date on the PlayTV.

My guess is that we'll get this once all TV's switch over to digital in 2009. Otherwise, we'll just have to wait for Sony to catch up with XBLM and start offering downloadable movies and TV shows.

Why wait, most have converted already. They just broadcast both. I hope you can plug in other devices like sat boxes. I dont use an off-air antenna and dont know many people that do. Maybe I'll put one up if not. This gives the PS3 yet another advantage over the competition.

sound nice, but how about being able to download the stored recorded program of the ps3 to your pro duo card, for the psp. this would be great, record movies, then store to psp, no need for wifi signal.

Technically if you have a location free player you can do this already with a Tivo and a cable box. My coworker today was showing me how he was able to watch cable at work on his PSP as well as any shows that were on his DVR right there on the spot.

I mean granted this cuts out a bunch of machines but assuming you have the main ones a DRV a Cable box and the Location Free player you can already do what Play TV is offering without a PS3.

So in order to watch tv now, I have to turn on my ps3. what a waste of energy.

But I actually might pick this up. aha.

I really wish sony would have put a usb plug in the back of the ps3

to me seeing a wire plugged into the front all the time might be annoying

but im a neat freak lol

OMG How super cool is this. Makes me want to get a PSP now as well!!! And at last a simple and effective straight forward advert, not like the stupid & bizarre surreal ones.

Yeah I think 1st poster has a point, perhaps late in 2009-early 2010 for this feature because this is relatively a big thing. A new form of tivo I guess.

This does add so much more to the PS3/PSP combo.

The only draw back to any of this is that it connects via USB & this will be a nuisance to quite a few people or at the very least unsightly.

I never really cared about the USB ports being at the front, but I think this device will make that difference a little bit of an inconvenience.

My HDD space gets sucked up with demos fast enough as is.  Luckily (for me) the US won't be getting it soon.  Not that streaming media to the PSP is fast enough anyway to not lag.

I SERIOUSLY dont understand why both Sony and Microsoft are venturing into such projects. It's simply a freeview box thats plugged in through your PS3 at the end of the day :/ You can buy freeview boxes that record and playback anyway.

I pay for Sky+ so I'm certainly not interested in this at all.

They're clearly not sure about the £99.99 price point, which is DAMN right. £99.99 for a slightly glorified freeview box that can play HD "freeview" channels (are there any?)

This is a great feature and I will definitely get it when it comes to the U.S., at least Sony is smarter than Microsoft in the fact they don't appeal to only hard-core FPS gamers.

All well and good, and yes it is very tempting, but can I plug my SKY box into it? Where I live doesn't get Freeview so at the moment the only way I can watch digital TV is by being a SKY customer, and Freeview doesn't get some of the channels (actually, quite a lot of the channels!) that show the TV shows that I want to watch - like Lost, Prison Break, Heroes (ok so I could wait until BBC2 show it but why would I want to wait when I can watch it on Sci-Fi?) etc etc. Otherwise, it is pretty damn cool. ;)
