PlayTV to release on September 19

Was PlayTV starting to feel a little bit like Home to some? It always felt as though the featured add-on would never get here; however, Eurogamer is reporting that the official release date is September 19. While David Reeves may have confused gamers with his statements of the item delivering by September 10 at the retail pricing of £78, it seems we'll be waiting just a tad bit longer.

On the positive side of the ordeal though, PlayTV will not cost buyers £78 as the currently revealed price point is a slimmer £69.99.

For those of you that are unaware of the item, PlayTV gives PlayStation 3 owners the opportunity to watch and record freeview channels in either SD or HD. They'll be given this ability whether they're playing a game or not and can even record two channels at one time.

    @ 10

    yeah your kinda right but i read somewhere that sony have been working with the bbc and they said the test signals that they have been receiving from them are amazing when it comes to pic quality

    Not excited about it myself cuz I have sky+ but I don't think it is a waste of time. It’s another round in Sony's corporate weapon against Microsoft.

    I pre-ordered one of these from Amazon ages ago for £59.  I thought at the time this would be a great way to prepare for HD Freeview.  I even upgraded my PS3 drive to 250GB.

    But...

    I recently read somewhere that the HD standard chosen for Freeview in the UK was not compatible with PlayTV (it will use the DVB-T2 chipset), so the PS3 will only be able to upscale to Freeview to HD. My TV does this all by itself.

    ...and don't hold out any hopes for recording two channels simultaneously - there's no mention of that in any of Sony's promo material.

    £70? pretty high price for that might have to wait till it goes down in price around £35.

    BBC HD ?  That would be quality !   No need for Freesat. I was gonna wait and get that with free HD channels which records, but no need if PLayTV does it.  Nice one.

    @ 21

    i wish i could find where i read all this now but the guy that was being interviewed from sony said that you can record one channel whilst watching another, and the big one! you will be able to record whilst in game. right ive got to find that article now!

    • 11:59am BST - August 13th, 2008

    @hesmanes
    That's my understanding too, but I don't think you can record two at once - and deffinitely no HD (in UK).

    Just a word of caution for those who might want to rush out and buy this is all.
