Publishers to start charging for themes?

Posted on May 16th, 2008 at 13:01 EDT

Recently on the Hong Kong PlayStation Store gamers have noticed that one of their latest themes revolving around the title Dark Mist has receive a price tag. While all themes up until now have always had that beautiful "FREE" tag beside them, it makes you wonder if this is the start of something or if it's just a publisher trying to snag a couple of extra dollars. The price may be meager at just $1 USD per theme, but the point isn't the pricing, it's the fact we've grown accustomed to themes being free.

Publishers design these themes for gamers and therefore have complete control over the pricing and how they're marketed. While every publisher to date has willingly given their themes out for free, it makes you wonder what's going on inside the minds of the people at WWS Japan Studio.

We'll be watching closely over the next couple of Hong Kong updates to see if this trend continues or if it'll stay limited to just themes from Japan Studio. Hopefully this doesn't leak over the European or North American market any time soon -- if ever.

Next: European SingStore updated

The European PlayStation store has been updated with a wide range of new songs. The list spans multiple countries, with Dutch, French, Norwegian, Portuguese and English t...

What would be the point in that?

We could just copy them! And get it for free

Charging for them is fine as long as we are still able to make our own for free.  After all if they employ a designer and also use sounds and good images, why not get paid for their effort.

I don't think its a bad thing if developers charge for themes that they make...they have every right to considering they own the IP.

As long as use of user created themes doesn't become illegal I don't think anyone will have any issues.

Yup, as long as we get to make our own, I don't mind them charging. It's only fair.  But of cours *puts on PS3 Fanboy Cap*

Doing this gives one of the advantages of the PS3 away to the 360 and that's us getting free themes, vs 360 owners having to pay for theirs.

Why would they even consider charging for themes when we can make our own? If there's something in that particular theme that we like, we can always make something similar and distribute it freely, thereby undercutting their attempt at nickel and dime-ing us.

Oh, just wanted to ask, is there a Metal Gear theme on the EU playstation store? I thought I saw that listed in one of the updates a few weeks back.

Worring about making us pay for them is a waste of time. They need to be putting more time in other things like Home, more games on the psn store. There are alot more things to do. Get on the ball sony.

p.s did anyone get in 2.35 update and if so what was it for.

This is actually because Japan has been helping China for earthquake rescue recently, but Sony wants China to keep hating Japan so they now make them pay for everything.

It will never work out. By giving people the ability to create thier own themes and upload them on sites like this, selling themes will never become much of a treat.

Sometimes I wonder how old people here and in the forums are...

As someone already mentioned, they are not exactly asking you to pay for the theme, but for the extra character...the theme is there just as an extra. The have named it pretty weirdly tho.

And it's not Sony who makes these decisions. They give the developers/publishers freedom to price their products how they want..

If someone wants to charge for themes, then they can (even tho it's not the case in this one), or if they want to over-price their addon content they can do that aswell (EA, Need for Speed, hint hint)...

Anyway...Finland lost today in IHL so I'll go back to bang my head to the wall..

I don't think that there is anything wrong with charging for Themes. I mean, $1.00 dollar for a Theme is nothing.  I mean, If I liked a Theme enough, I would pay $1.00 for a Theme easily without thinking twice. I think that a lot of PS3 owners have gotten so accustomed with a lot of things being free that it's almost shocking to see something that has to be paid for other than Game Add-on's and Downloadable Games.

I wouldn't be surprised if all other Publishers that create PS3 Themes start charging $1.00 for each Theme. I think that this  might be Sony's first step in starting to make PS3 gaming more profitable. But as long as people can make there own themes for Free, it doesn't really make a lot of sense to start charging for Themes, but I do think that some of the "Official" PS3 Themes look a little bit better than the User Created Ones... but there are plenty of User Created Themes that look just as good as the "Official" Themes.

this theme seems to be the only one not free all the others for what i looked are free ?? i don't think Sony will be putting it for all themes its only if the Publishers of the theme wish to that is not Sony anyhow all the themes i have looked in the store kinda suck at the end if you need a cool theme just get it for free here in PSU the users know how to make better themes then the makers of the game lol anyhow this is no big news its just a theme.

The only problem I see with this is that you don't really get a good 'feel' for a theme just by a screenshot.

I've downloaded a number of free ones from here at PSU, and also from the stiore, and to be honest, I found them... lacking. So I deleted them. A dollar may not be a lot, but if you pay, download and decide you don't like it, those dollars will soon add up.

The best I've seen - and the one I use - is 'Cell Project' by Modus.

Ofcourse this theme also actually adds an extra character to the game to they most likely are paying for that...

its starts at $1.00, but where will it end? this whole DLC micro-transaction is going to get out of hand, i still remember the day of ps2 where extra map were free. now they want to charge for maps, characters, weapons, and anything else the can thing of. its called the nickle and dime scheme. if i asked you to pay a $100 for a ps3 game, you would say no way, but if i only sell you part of the game and told you it was the whole game for $50, you would buy it right? then i turn around made 5 update at $10 a piece, after buying the update thats the $100 i wanted from u in the first place. thats what these developers are doing to us, the consumers. open your eyes, remember before the PS3 launched and Sony say they wouldn't be charging micro transaction on the PSN and they Bashed Microsoft for doing it.

simply refuse to buy them. it's that simple. Get some free artwork online and make your own. Seriously I dont see why ANYONE would pay for themes, that's M$'s retarded idea, no one should be trying to push that kind of agenda.

Then again if they'd just sell the game on the US store already maybe they'd make some more money so they wouldnt have to charge for a theme.

EDIT

People dont read the comments becuase they're angry and insensed at the ideaput forth by the article which if you notice says NOTHIGN about an extra character. If you;re just reading it for the first time that's all you know and the text box for you comment is before any other comments so people in a rush to complain about what they perceive as a mistake simple type and post.

How do you fix it? you tell PSU you update the damn article so that it's not so inaccurate that it pisses people off. No one's looking at the picture when the article tells them the story, so fix the article!

I knew this was going to hapen sooner or later. Microsoft charge for themes, wallpapers and icons on thier Xbox Marketplace. And they are making a killer off it. If i was Sony I would done the same. If it bring in profit then why not. They are here to make money not to give away everything for free. But again why would they charge if users can make thier own themes. Unless Sony have something up thier sleeves that we don't know about yet.

This is the least reasonable item to pay for. It's a theme. People will continue to make them for free... some of even have the same level of polish as the official versions, but free.

It doesn't say you get the add on character, it says it's a theme of the add on character "Shadow".  So the price is just for the theme.

Also, it's not Sony charging, it's the publisher.  Not a big deal especially since you can make your own and DL ones for free.

anyone want me to make this theme for them? for free? I dont see how  companies can  charge you  to basically advertise for them on your ps3...or maybe this is a real big deal in japan and the people will pay for it....where there is profit to be made, a product will be created....
