Report: No new consoles until 2013, PS3 to beat 360 by 2011

Wedbush Morgan Securities has forecast that no new home consoles will be released by the big three (aka Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo) until the year 2013 at the very earliest.
Speaking in a mammoth report issued yesterday, the company stated, “Because it is eminently clear that no new console is planned for launch in 2010 (the fifth year of the current cycle), we do not expect hardware or software sales to peak any time soon. Rather, we expect that hardware and software sales will peak, as they have in the past, in the year prior to the introduction of a new console; this cycle, we think that will happen several years from now, if at all.”
“Hence, we believe that the “peak” of the cycle will be in year n-1, with “n” representing the launch of a next generation console. As we believe that will not occur until 2013 or later, we calculate year n-1 as 2012 or later.”
Elsewhere, the report also offers sales estimations for current generation platforms up until 2011, with the Wii, unsurprisingly, taking the top spot with global sales of 93 million. However, PlayStation 3 is placed ahead of Xbox 360, with Sony’s machine selling 49 million units compared to the 360’s 44 million.

Meh...I haven't seen enough of the PS3 yet, so I couldnt care less if a new console isnt released until 2015. I seriously have not enjoyed the PS3 half as much as I enjoyed the PS2 & this is down to changes in Socom, waiting for FF13 & GT5 etc.
Im sure as heck not buying another console for quite a long time & this doesnt mean Im not satisfied with the PS3. I think its a great machine....just waiting on games I like.

GT5 / P = PS3
GT5 is gonna have a massive amount of life span imo

Whereas you may think that's cool news, I bet they are factoring in price cuts that Sony won't make.
But I do believe what they say about consoles and 2013. With this economy and how technology is good enough to where these consoles (even the 360) can last a long time, I think this generation will be longer. The may not have originally planned it that way, but I think M$ has an 8-year console of its own in the 360, honestly.

@ 2 you are on the money there!
I couldnt agree more. We just need more MASSIVE game sequels, then i will be content with this generation.
Ill be happy to play my PS3 til 2020. lol -

Think about it though really, PS3 price cut would of already happened by then. Alot of 360 users will end up buying a ps3, since i've asked a few people on the internet and real life.

I cannot see how & what else they can do to improve the PS3 except make it thinner. What they need to do is make more out of this world games. How about a sequel to Heavenly Sword, MGS, Dead Space, GT5 (whenever that comes out). They can update the system with a dowload patch. They already made a motion sensor device for the PS3 so they can compete with the wii. I just see the PS3 to last up untill 2020.

well this is obvious,if all consoles was free i pretty much would bet my life the ps3 would be the fav, which prove is just the price and when that comes down it will overtake the 360 in north america, bare in mind its already over taken 360 in asia and europe.ps3 has won already.nothing more the 360 can give, the price is already cut to the bone and the games are maxed out/crap exclusives.

Man I really wish analysts would stop with this crap...they've been trying to guess at who will be ahead near the end of the life span since the beginning of this generation! AND THEY'VE BEEN WRONG EVERY TIME! 2007 is going to be the year of the PS3! Okay...maybe not....2008 is going to be the year of the PS3! ...hmmmm....2009 is going to be the year of the PS3! Just shut up about the standings, you've been wrong every time. Let gamers enjoy their consoles without worrying about who's in the lead. Enjoy your investment and don't worry about whether your console is number 1 or 2. If being number 1 means that my system will be stuck with crappy software (humphhhh..wii...) then I think I'll gladly embrace my 2nd and 3rd place consoles.

@20 In complete agreement. I'm tired of hearing how the PS3 will overtake the xbox360 by 2012. So by the last year of this generation cycle the PS3 will finally overtake the 360? Not much of a victory. Save it please.

I feel as though my PS3 has a lot more it can do, that my 360 is reaching its max and my Wii was maxed after Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. (i think Super Mario Galaxy was VERY VERY good, but Twilight Princess was still better IMO)

@Tetsu: Microsoft has commented that the launch of Natal will give the 360 an extended lifespan, unlike normal console lifespans. They have said that launching Natal will be like launching a new console. Quite simply, it's far too costly and risky in this kind of economic climate to launch a new console in, say, 2010, or even 11. You best believe that Microsoft wants to position the 360 as the inheritor of the PS2 userbase, and that they'll do what is necessary to try to make some of that money they lossed on the original Xbox. So don't expect a new console from MS for a while yet.

Microsoft can't survive with the 360 until 2013. Sony might release a PS4 by then, but I doubt it.
The PSX and PS2 were out about 5 or 6 years before a new one came about, so I would expect a new Playstation by 2012. At least Sony will continue to support PS3 at that time.

Go over to xbox fan sites, like "teamxbox.com," and notice something weird. . . they never talk about us. They don't talk about winning or losing the console war-- its like they don't even know we exist. Why are we so concerned with the 360 and the console war?

#16....my thoughts exactly. Nothing this generation or past gens shows anything like this happening. The only way I see the 360 getting 3rd is if the PS3 is still selling when the 360 has been discontinued and the 720 is out.
Analysis....what a joke!

@35 interesting hypothesis. . . but doesn't explain our disproportionate abundance of ultra-obsessive hyper-sensetive fanboys. . .
