I wonder how much it'll cost.

??? what in the world?... the japanese have shown that there spending habits are more skewed toward cheaper systems (THE WII), so sony counters with a most likely more expensive ps3. Even if it's the same price, I don't think anyone is going to care about the value of the system, and they will still continue to buy the cheaper system.

Nice, that like their first vision of the console in 2005, 3 ethernet ports and 2 HDMI ports... And a larger HDD. Seems nice!

Well, maybe 3 ethernet ports is a little to many...

I really doubt that the specs are from any source at all

the average consumer wouldnt use 2 hdmi ports or 3 networking ports

it would be nice if they put 1 or 2 usb ports in the back

for like external drives and stuff

Competing against the xbox360 120gb elite version, i think this will be like a nail in the coffin on the xbox360 elite since i believe it haves 1 port. Especially in japan if sony does this then microsoft will try to change up their strategy once again.

    • 8:21pm BST - October 7th, 2007

ok. just because you not all into tech n specs don't rain on other people parade that are into that kind of stuff. if sony does come out with this sku then MS doesn't have the right to call its 360 an elite. say what you want but its the plain, simple damn truth. for me more connections it have the better and easier i can interconnect with the rest of my entertainment system.

I totally agree i need 2 HDMI ports because then you can have one going to your HDTV and one going to your surround system, with HDMI as well and have 7.1 True HD surround sound and 3 ethernet ports is amaing no more use for my router and 6 USB is amazing too i love it and am gonna buy one

2 HDMI ports would be great for people (like myself) who want to send HD audio formats to an AVR while sending the original video signal to the HDTV (so it's not passed through and for PiP reasons).  God I wish the PS3 I have now had this.

    Let's be creative here people....sheesh

With two HDMI ports you can hook the ps3 up to two TVs, so instead of split screen, it'll be a whole lot better w/ two tvs, one for each player. imagine roaming around gta iv w/ a buddy on two screens, or racing in gran turismo, or warhawk

With 3 ethernet ports, your ps3 could be a network hub, or you could network multiple ps3s for massive multiplayer or data transfer

you guys may think it's a bit overboard but obviously people w/ ps3s have more money and people in japan are a lot more technology oriented than americans.

I would like to see a $400 US PS3 come to north america. The 40Gig version would be nice and add the ps2 backwards compatibility emulation software Sony already has written. Just don't spend any more money on emulation software, lets move on from here with new next gen games for ps3.

what would 3 ethernet ports be good for? And for that matter what would 2 hdmi ports do? Network hub and 2 tvs, I see you guys have already answered my questions. Too bad sony wont make a trade in option to get these better ps3s (well, the 40's not really BETTER, but anyways).

If this bundle is real, it's just amazing! As someone mentioned, this model resembles the initial and original PS3 design before it got trimmed down. I hope it's real - it's pretty high-end and a sure competitor to the X360 elite model.

Pure Fantasy!!!...I'll eat my hat if this is true!....if I had a hat ;) ....Just out of interest does anyone know what the speed of the current BlueRay drive is in the PS3? I see that this one is supposed to be at x2 speed. If this is a faster drive than the current one, I wonder if games will load faster?

it might leave it behind technically but the xbox is kicking but with the amount of quality games/ the control pad/the online play/the online arcade/the head sets that work, i own both and ive hardly played on the ps3 its a complete waste of space, nothing works properly, even the latest blu ray disc with the ps mag dident work. and now that the odd good game might (MIGHT) be released this year the playstation that i payed big bucks for on launch day is now obsolete, what ive seen so far i think in years to come the ps3 might go down as the worst console ever, it also makes me laugh how many people on this website blindly support sony like their sticking up for a friend who is being bullied, the last update 9.something updated who knows what and only a hand full of people understand whats been updated but you have got people commenting saying things like "thankyou sony" and other pathetic comments GROW UP PEOPLE.  it may be early days for the ps3 but some of the problems like obsolete blutooth cannot be changed now nor can the fact that the console is 2 years behind xbox360 and by the time they catch up(if ever) the next next gen xbox consoles will be appearing as rumours on the internet and this gen will be soon forgotten, having said all that the hardware power and the build of the ps3 are good they have just got so scared with being compared to the xbox and being accused of copying that many of the most important basic details that could have made this console great have not been added instead replaced by rubbish ideas that have ruined this console.

@chilledbreeze7: The current PS3s sport 2X blu-ray speed. This is infact what drives the console warm when watching BD movies - I think games don't utilize this speed - yet.

@PS3-The Ultimate Machine: Light years away friend, light years away.

@SLOWAY: Can't work you BD PS mag disc? I donno about that one. Any error messages from your console that says it cant read the disc? It can't be a region locking issue as this only applies to BD movies. Out of curiosity though is there anything else that doesn't work? A game title, music discs, or other DVDs perhaps?

People dont be fooled.. If you carefully look.. That is the same non playable PS3 @ E3 back in 2005!!!!  If you go to Wiki and read the history part you will read that Sony first intended to come out with a PS3 that had 6 USB ports and 2 HDMI ports but then reduced that to 1 each b/c of cost.. With so many people complainning about the price.. Do you really think that Sony would waist their time with a model that will cost even more than $600??? No!!!  This rumor is only being spread around b/c of the announcement of the 40GB.. Haters and competitiors are trying real hard to hurt Sony in anyway.. Try to create this B$ rumor to make possible new PS3 owners to wait around for a model that isnt going to come out.. How lame..

Nice, but I think their focusing on the wrong thing at this point. They need to hype-up the games more than the system through clever marketing, actually launch some kick-ass exclusives, have one high-end and one standard SKU, and lower the price.

    Ideal:

Standard = 40gig, 2 USB, 1 HDMI, 1 ethernet port, full backwards compatibility, rumble controller, 1 game, 5 movies, $350

High-end = 80gig, 4 USB, 2 HDMI, 2 ethernet ports, media card readers, full backwards compatibility, rumble controller, 1 game, 5 movies, sony remote, $450

  46. The Cleaner

    • 9:50pm BST - October 8th, 2007

This stuff is all for the Japanese market where they get a choice of 20GB full featured, 40GB gimped, 60GB full featured, 80GB half gimped, and 160GB full features ++. They pay much less than anyone else too as Sony is prioritising Japan as number 1.

Now can Sony please hire the guy who posted above me. "ladellb" has a nice configuration and a reasonable price point. He is on the money about focusing the marketing on games.

Seriously - sack the dim wits who broke backward compatibility. Drop kick the Cretin who keeps confusing the market with all these dumbass SKU's every few months. Sack the idiot who is asking EU region to pay high prices just so that Sony can subsidise better quality product with more features at lower prices in Japan. Dont treat the PAL regions like a dumping ground for gimped & half gimped 2nd best stuff at highest prices. Fair go Sony. Give your marketing knuckle heads the boot - forget pushing Bluray movies & dumb PR lies & BS promises after promises - just deliver some games and run advertisements for the games.

Rumor or Not, such a release of an updated PS3 is wanted by many potential Sony preffered customers.

I personally will keep saving and hoping for such a 'better' machine to be released, because I'm not happy with any of the current models released thus far. I'll wait for the Dual Shock 3, i'll wait for the Dual HDMI, so I can play Head2Head or have a Full Time Web Browser available while I'm gaming at the same time.

I'll also wait for the Rumoured PVR functions and Humungus HD (or just sell it empty and let me buy my own Damnit !). I'd like that Backwards Compatible (BC) chip re-installed too, even tho I own PS1+2 consoles, bcos upscaling is a Nice Feature i'd like to see on the new Plasma. While I'm at it, put the Damn memory stick read back in the console, I dont want dangly adapters hanging about everywhere anymore its almost 2008 !!!

The way i see the requirements for a PVR PS3 are it needs to Harness DivX codec technology. The PS3 has the CPU power to do the encoding and this would keep the HDD size requirement down. Imagine it...750mb = 1.5hrs of Record time.  Not MPEG2 and its 2gb/1hr or 7gb/hr for HDTV, its old technology I'm afraid ! Lets work it out... 160gb = 213hrs of video record time ! , should keep everyone happy, shouldnt it ? ...add another 70gb, make it a 250gb HD for the PS3 and be done with it Sony.
