Rumor: PlayStation 4 to use AMD graphics chip

Forbes reports that Sony is collaborating with AMD to include a new graphics chip in the electronic giant’s next-generation console.

For those unaware, AMD provides the muscle behind the Xbox 360’s graphical capabilities with the Xenos, while PlayStation 3 utilizes the RSX ‘Reality Synthesizer’ from Nvidia.

News of AMD’s involvement in Sony’s as-yet unannounced hardware comes via a Forbes profile on CEO Rory Read, which reads:

"It’s Read’s job to make sure AMD doesn’t screw up its slate of new products," adding, "which includes a hush-hush-effort to put its graphics chips in Sony’s still-unannounced new game console – and shake off the once scrappy company’s years-long funk."

Unsurprisingly, both AMD and Sony is keeping mum on the subject, with Sony having distanced itself from the topic of next-generation hardware on numerous occasions as of late.

Recently, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) boss Jack Tretton admitted he’d be ‘very distracted’ by the prospect of a PS4 reveal this year.
