Rumor Roundup – August 1 – 6, 2011

Welcome to the first instalment in our Rumor Roundup series, a new feature here at PlayStation Universe where we look at the hottest industry rumblings circling the web, as well as offering our honest opinion on them for good measure.

Mass Effect 3 online multi-player will be post-launch downloadable content

PSU says: This rumor was posted by a member of BioWare’s official forums. Being a forum post it’s easy to just write this off as an individual simply looking for attention – we’ve all seen this happen in the past after all — but for argument’s sake, let’s take a closer look.

As most of you might know, BioWare has repeatedly denied any online multi-player for Mass Effect 3, though that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. How many times in the past we have heard companies deny rumors only for them to turn out to be the real deal a few months down the road? Plus, this sort of thing isn’t unheard of in the industry – just look at Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 post-launch Versus multiplayer mode — though having said that, it’s not enough to validate the rumor by any means.

With the information we have available at present, it’s difficult to take this rumour at face value. If we’re to believe it though, then we’ll get a multiplayer announcement at GamesCom later this month, so until then we are going to have to call this one out with the information on hand.

Verdict: Doubtful

Rumor: God of War 4 leaked.

PSU says: This rumor comes from Facebook of all places, and was listed on what people assumed to be Sony’s official Mexican PlayStation fan page. The page featured what seemed to be a logo for God of War 4, accompanied by the statement “Coming 2012”. There are a number of things that put this rumor into question however, the most important one being that the so-called logo is a actually a screenshot from a fan-made trailer upload April 9,2010. As such, I think you guys can guess where this is going.

Having said that, rumors of God of War 4 have been doing the rounds for some months now, with U.K. publication PSM3 claiming a fourth numbered entry in the PlayStation-exclusive franchise is in the works for a September 2012 launch. All the same, the game was rumored for a E3 reveal, which never transpired.

Verdict: Busted

Resident Evil 6 is canon, coming in 2012

Rumors on a sixth numbered entry in Capcom’s venerable horror series first cropped up a few weeks back at Comic-Con, where a snapshot of the game’s logo was taken during a behind-closed-doors event. Adding more fuel to the fire this week is OPM UK, who have said Resident Evil 6 will be a canonical instalment in the franchise and will be released in 2012. RE6 is a certainty; Capcom has already said it’ll release it eventually, and have hinted that it will be a return to the series’ survival horror roots.

However, a 2012 release doesn’t seem quite as likely, especially when one scrutinizes the development patterns of past RE games and how long they take to arrive on the market after an initial announcement has been made. Then again, there is every chance Capcom has been busy beavering away on RE6 for some time now, and as such are prepping it for a 2012 launch. Either way, with Resident Evil celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, a TGS announcement is looking positive.

Verdict: Likey
