Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced plans in a recent interview to merge two of their best development teams into one entity. Studio Liverpool, famous for their WipEout HD release, and Evolution Studios of MotorStorm fame will be living under one roof in the not so distant future.
According to SCEE's Michael Denny, the two teams already share management structures and have been using combined resources for a short time. Considering the location of both companies, it makes sense for them to come together under one roof in order to develop upcoming titles while saving on a lot of financial aspects.
For those concerned as to whether this will result in less innovation or new IPs, you have nothing to be concerned about. Both development teams are still in charge of their own concept discussions and encouraged to take advantage of new opportunities and coming up with new IPs.
Considering the history that these two share apart, it's going to be interesting to see what they come up with as a whole.

so, are they just moving under the same roof, or are they literally merging? In other words, will they remain different teams and just be in the same building (thus saving money on facilities, utilities, and maintenance) or will they actually become 1 brand new team??? I hope it's the first, it would be best if they remain separate teams under one roof... they could still exchange ideas and maybe even borrow a developer here and there for a specific project, but they would still produce different things.

Wipeout wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped ... I only bought it cos I used to play the original. Motorstorm on the other hand, now that was deserving of accolade. I still need to pick up the sequel but the demo was awesome. Those jumps gave me buttrerflies.
This is probably just a overhead cutting excercise and hopefully will provide us with some good titles but I'm always in favour of smaller, closer dev teams to provide greater variety between titles.

This can only bring good things to us PS3 owners. Maybe we'll get a super-awesome racing game with 60 frames-per-second at 1080p? =D
