Saints Row 2 details divulged

Posted on March 4th, 2008 at 17:17 EDT

Arguably THQ's biggest title of 2008, Saints Row 2 is looking to go head to head with the king of open world games - Grand Theft Auto. With Grand Theft Auto IV hitting the streets this April, THQ remains confident that both franchises can co-exist on current generation platforms. Here are some new details on their upcoming sandbox title.

Stillwater, the city in the first Saints Row, has gotten a makeover for the sequel. The structure of the city will be both changed and enlarged, resulting in a completely different area in which to play. Just to give you an example, a desert setting will apparently be placed somewhere within the world.

Character customization will be a deep system where you're able to change such aspects as your character's taunt, compliment, walk and combat styles in addition to standard physical features. Don't expect a quiet character either; there are over 60,000 lines of dialogue in Saints Row 2. What if you're not satisfied with prettying up just your character? Pimp out your crib! Add items to your home to impress even the most stubborn compliment-divulger.

A new weapon, the satchel charge, will be introduced. Want to take out a group of bad guys with style? Simply stick a satchel charge on a car and convert it into an automotive bomb. As for your regular arsenal, an over-the-shoulder view for gunplay will be relegated to a click of the right stick. This Gears-esque view should please critics of the aiming system in the first Saints Row.

Saints Row 2 looks to be bigger and better than the first iteration in the series. We'll have more for you before it releases later this year.

Never played the first one (360) was it any good, or will GTAIV own all.

I dont think it will stack up to GTA4

GTAIV is way better. saints row seems like a cheap rip off of GTA. it's been around longer and have seen the graphics get way better over the franchise.

I'm a diehard GTA fan but I'm still looking forward to this title. I had a chance to play the first one on my friend's (now deceased) Xbox 360. Let's seen if it can come close to GTA IV!

Odium GTA's graphics may be bad, but no one really cares. Actually GTA taught me that a game could be the best thing you ever played with outdated bad graphics.

1st one was like blaxploitation. Pour a 40 on your comrade to revive them? Dont like that at all. Give me THE pioneer.

nice to see it's not an xbox exclusive but still, i really don't think it will compare to GTA IV. as with all sandbox games. gta has always led the way.

If you think about it, since Vice City there have been many "rip-off's" of GTA

I have it on the 360.. i'd give it a probebly an 6.5/10.. its okay, but nothing great. It lacks *something* i quite put my finger on.

Saints rown was a great game...i really don't see the point in this "GTA is going to own" mentality...i've got all the GTA's (back to the first one on the PS1) and i own Saints row, i'll quite happily go out and buy both the new ones as well...i don't care what platform the games are released on i just care that i get to play loads of quality games...

Sounds good. I had the first one on 360 and really enjoyed it a lot. But still in all.....GTAIV will RULE ALL!!! When this game -GTA4- comes out I may very well have no more use for my eject button!

Oh wait, another sand box, well i guess if your a different race then it's all new, well ok as long as its fun and replayable.

Sounds good but I doubt deep customization can take the crown from GTA, even though I love customizing in games.

GTA has bad graphics? ..jeez, there is really a limit on how detailed you can make everything in a sandbox game of this size and still fit it on..whatever the xbox 360 uses..

And gameplay is 90% of the game, and if i even have to say this... GTA IV has Euphoria, Saints Row does not!

I always thought that Saints Row would stay 360 exclusive.

All this "bigger & better" talk is pointless to some people who haven't experienced the first game. At this point, Red Faction: Guerilla has boiled down to a wait-and-see affair. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they cancelled the PS3 version of this as well.

Saint's Row was a great game.  I still play the first one and actually enjoy it more than GTA.  The customization of the characters and cars is ten times better than GTA and the side missions are fun as he!!.  Plus Saint's Row 2 will have planes and helicopters which is a major win over GTA4.  I have yet to see a GTA with a hispanic or female lead character either so Saints Row 2 wins again.  Both games are going to be fun and will have tons of replay value for your $60.00.

Why all the hate for Saint's Row?!?! Have any of you ACTUALLY PLAYED this game?  It is hands-down one of the best sandbox-style games I've played to date and the physics in the game kick current versions of GTAs butt!

Even though its a blatant rip off of GTA, I loved the first one so I will be getting this game when it comes out.

I may keep an eye out for this one. Sure it's not GTA but I'm betting it'll offer some openworld fun for the price.

I don't think this game will stand a chance now that GTAIV has multiplayer as well.Tough the likes of Saints Row will definitely help the best of the best get better, since, mind u,this is supposed to be a really great game, though i wouldn't know since i have neither a 360 nor this game.
