Brain Farrell, CEO of THQ, has said that the company’s forthcoming Saints Row 2 contains enough elements to differentiate itself from other titles in the sandbox genre to ensure its success when the game hits stores later this year.
Speaking at the William Blair & Company's investor meeting on Wednesday, Farrell commented, “We have a very differentiated product in this open-world genre.”
“We're always concerned about GTA as a competitor. It's a great product, the leader in the genre. But we were actually very pleased when we saw GTA IV. It's a great game, but they went in this great creative direction [that makes the game] more character- and story-driven,” explained Farrell.
In contrast to GTA IV, Saints Row 2’s focus will be geared towards “tongue-in-cheek ... silly, over-the-top gameplay,” he explained. “...They had gone this way on the branch, we've gone the other."
Farrell further added that the sequel would contain a vast array of character customisation, "a lot" of downloadable content, a "larger, richer environment," in addition to a unique combat system and "seamless" two-player co-op functionality.
"We think that we have a very differentiated product with Saints Row 2,” he asserted.
The original Saints Row was released exclusively on the Xbox 360 in 2006, and has since gone on to drum up over two million sales worldwide.
Saints Row 2 is currently scheduled for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 in October 2008.

It's great that the two series go in different directions. Now we can get our amazing story fix in gta and crazy insanity in Saints Row

because gta was very poor, i might actually go out and buy this.
gta wasnt very poor the online was suprisng good no great for a first time on the game and the story was brilliant. gta iv and mgs4 are the best two games on the console so how you can say gta was very poor is stupid
What a load of clap trap, this will be much of the same, all they are trying to do is jump on the GTA bandwagon...............aint gonna happen. The first one was rubbish! Ps GTA wasnt very poor, if you think its a poor game you ought to give up playing games.
gta wasn't poor but seriously tho it just got very boring after a couple days...go kill this guy or drive here blah...that's been done to death (or was it metal gear that killed it for me lol)..but whatever imma get this cause of co-op play..nothing better than that i guess
psn id: gingo... saints row 2 will be like what gta used to be, fun and enjoyable and over the top but since rockstar decided to make gta more realistic it has lost the fun edge we have all been accustomed to

I fell in love with Saints Row on the 360, it was everything San Andreas should have been in my opinion. Saints Row was a unique experience with lovable characters, deep customization, and [for its time] stellar next-gen graphics and effects.
Saints Row 2 looks to offer more of what made the first game fun: The Activities and completely ovr-the-top humor that borderlines embarassment haha.
DEFINITELY picking this one up on launch day.
