Sony: PS3 sales up 56% year on year

With both Xbox 360 and the Wii putting hundreds of thousands of unit sales between themselves and PlayStation 3 last month, Sony's situation in North America this winter seems grim indeed. Or does it? The PlayStation hardware may be struggling to keep pace with its competitors at present (thanks in no small part to a hefty Microsoft price cut), but the bigger picture is rather brighter.

That's according to Sony itself, anyway. In a statement shared with VG247, the manufacturer revealed that the PS3 has enjoyed a sales increase of 56 per cent over October 2007, despite a continued high price threshold. PS3 software sales are apparently up by 200 per cent year over year.

Sony refused to take October software charts, which put the delightful LittleBigPlanet in eighth behind Fable 2 and Fallout 3, at face value. The company pointedly reminded readers that the Christmas shopping rush hasn't "officially" begun, and that the impact of its top drawer titles has yet to be fully registered: "with the holiday shopping season officially kicking off in November, strong software sales are expected to continue with ongoing momentum on LittleBigPlanet and the launch of Resistance 2."

LittleBigPlanet indeed was only on sale for a few days at the backend of October - under those circumstances, a top ten placing is nothing short of miraculous.

A cloudy prospect for PlayStation, then, but one not unalleviated by rays of sunshine.

Yes , yes we all know this. Sony is doing better and better, and much as they have said in other articles on PSU, the real turning point is when Sony does a price cut thats said to be a bad thing. Sony has already said previously too that their holding right on target or optimal range with their stockholders/investors in mind.

I can see the resession impacting on the PS3, everyone has less money this christmas, I see the Wii and 360 doing well due to their low price.

Its not about price. Its perceived value. That is Sony's problem. Make the perceived value to the customer outstanding and they'll pay whatever you want. If I can come up with the cash to get it so can other people. NEVER settle for 2nd best. That is why most people are unhappy.

I think the sales will be very interesting this season ... are people gonna go for what's cheap or are they gonna buy something that is a bit more of an all rounder.

Sony's best ploy here in the UK would be to bundle playtv with the console this christmas.  Therefore effectively selling a PVR a bluray player and a stunning games console in one package.  Then advertise it till there's nowt left in the shops but some stale Wii's and a shelf of RRoD

a price cut doesn't look practical from a business stand point. the most expensive part of any computing device is usually the processor. as far as im aware all consoles use older generation chips and fine tune them to run how they want them to(adding stuff here and there to increse clock cycles) but sony decided to make a new chip, the cell(i know it was around in the 80's -im not that old though) so production costs are high because the development process hasn't had as much time as the 360's xenon(or whatever its called)

theres a bit more to it then that but thats sony's main cost in the ps3. when the production process becomes more efficent then we will start to see the price fall ( i think sony still lose money on every console, that was the case when it first cam out, but im not sure about it now)

p.s i know the 360's processor is also new but MS used the best of the old genertaion and put it into the new processor and added a few new generation gizmo's to it. price= lower then cell.

    but i already have my ps3 so all u's who get a price cut....lucky u :)

Actually they've got a good point about the 360 price cut and that the sales of PS3 still rose.

Hopefully next year we see this rise in sales continue with the release of great games like killzone 2, gran turismo 5, god or war 3.  Well seeing as that the killzone 2 release date is so close to christmas anyway sony could also market that game this holiday season.  Kids can think of it as a late christmas gift.

I dont think or believe that we or Sony should be concerned about sales details as this is a marathon and not a race. Seeing as the Ps3 came out a year later at a high price point and is only 5/6 million behind the 360 we and Sony should be pleased. When the inevitable Ps3 price cut comes and interest grows as the Ps3 develops you'll see the Ps3 overtaking the 360. Had the Ps3 come out at the same time as the 360 at the same price point and was 5/6 million behind Sony would be concerned. However when you do the sums, £300/$500 multiplied by 16 million SKU's in the home that equals a staggering amount of money. Free online, Free wireless connection, Home, Brower and Blu-ray alone will be the telling factor in the long term.

@4, perceived value is a big piece, as you said.  Gamers know it plays games, but how is Sony positioning to reach a broader market?  I know this example is cheesey, but I downloaded on PSN the BD live education vid this week b/c it's Disney and my kids like to pick out Disney stuff to see.  I thought the features they showed were really cool, but if I only see it from my PSN store download, then that won't help sell more PS3.  Sony needs to get out there and push what else it can do besides games and HD movies now.

Hmm, seems that with few 360 titles recently (gears2 fable 2) those fans MUST buy whats out, so the broader spectrum of PS3 titles kind of shows that people have to wait on some titles at least till xmas.
