Sony has revealed its intention to revitalize the development community for its PlayStation Portable console, with plans to back the handheld gaming system for the next ten years.
Speaking with Pocket Gamer, Sony Europe’s Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations, Zeno Colaco, commented: “We definitely have the ambition for it to feature very strongly in the future, both on its own and also complimentary to PlayStation Network environment and the PS3.”
“But we'll have to wait a while before we can fully reveal the direction we're going in. Ten years is certainly the long-term plan though.”
“We need to revitalise the developer community to get behind PSP,” said Colaco.
“For example, it's easy to make a DS-type game for a PSP game in terms of cost and speed of development and we will be looking to do encourage that as we continue to develop the PSP. I'm not just talking about the hardware but the services and the business models and the support, too.”
“Our sales for PSP is over 37 million units, which is huge, particularly when you take into account the level of third-party sales there are for PSP compared to DS.”
“So from my perspective, what's important is we continue to tell publishers and developers that there's an opportunity to make money on PSP, which is something that will become apparent over the next two years as the network services are developed.”

Sony need to take the finger out with the first edition of the PSP. They seem to forget the people who rushed out to buy it when it was released and only bring good things to the PSP Slim. For the same consoles it is sh.tty they way they do it

its is failing i mean just look at the games comig out. there are only a few decent games on the system god of war, football manager, tekken and socom and mgs wasnt bad either really they need to frshen things up and perhaps bring out a psp that runs on bluray with little blu ray discs that hold about half the amount a ps3 disc does as it would be half the size. bring out psp 2 woop woop i only use on holidays anyway so football manager is pretty much all i use for as it never gets old :)

bloodwarg we will not be seeing umd blurays for a very long time, if any at all. with todays technology progressing so fast it would almost be better to just use a massive flash card (whatever it is that the psp uses at the moment for saves)if they ever make them. personally i believe that UMDs were a big disadvantage for sony and that they should of just used the flash cards. i doubt sony will make the same mistake again

Well, if your going to back it for 10 years, atleast get some good games released. I'm thinking of selling mine soon, and might just get surround sound for my PS3.

10 years is .... that a long way ... i am not sure if that they can do it ... 3 more years maybe ... if they redesigned it with the second analogue and adding unique services (PSP Home) "plus" making more use of the PSP PS3 connectivity ...then they we'll last ten years .. i think :)

Hi people!
This is my first post but I hope to share a lot more. I'm glad SONY is supporting the psp for such a long time. It's always reconforting to know that your newly acquired gadget will not be phased out prematurely. Even, if a new psp2 comes around 3 years from now, we already know that psp1 will get a ps2-like treatment. So its a win-win situation for psp owners.
LATER!

I'd hate to say it but as much as I use my PSP (more like abuse everyday) I don't see it lastin for ten years; at least not with the way Sony's treating it now. 4.00 was, well pathetic, and the original has tossed to the wind. They need to seriously up the memory and storage space, and up the UMD space. At least LATE PS2 graphics.

Okay I'm bout sick of the idiots who have been sayin "PSP doesn't have any great games" for like 2 or 3 freakin years straight...It doesn't have any great games compared to what?
Ill be puttin my list at the end of this post just to show you some great stuff on the PSP since obvisiouly you ignore the isht out of its library. But first I just want to ask if we're comparing the DS' library to the PSP's cause if we are on average the PSP has better games.
Example, what would you play first? Rolling toilet paper off the roll or Crisis Core? Yeah, I couldah compared it to FF:3 remake, but Rolling toilet paper off the roll are the types of games that are supposed to be so much better than anything on PSP.
Now, here's my list
Powerstone Collection (2 games)
MGS:PO/+ (2 games)
Monster Hunter Portable/2ND/G (3 games)
Valkyrie Profile
Darkstalkers Chronicles
SFA3:MAX
GOW:CoO
Tales of Rebirth
Tales of the World
Brave Story
Capcom Puzzle World (collection of games)
Capcom Classics Reloaded/Remixed (2 collections of games)
Coded Soul
FF:Crisis Core
GGX2#Reloaded (2 games)
Monster Kingdom Jewel Summoner
Musou Orochi
Patapon
Princess Crown
Rezel Cross
Armored Core
Shinobido
Silent Hill Origins
Tekken 5: DR
Valhalla Knights/2 (2 games)
Wipeout Pulse
Yggdra Union
And these are only the PSP/UMD games I own, this isn't counting the PS1 back catalog and PS1 games have GIANT potential cause I know there's a lot that im just now getting around to finding and playing for the first time.
Never have play Jumping Flash. Don't forget these are just the PSP games I have, there are that many more
no great games...yeah

I think $40 is a bit excessive for some of those PSP games. The price nees to go down to about $30 and they'll see an increase in sales. I only have 2 games for my PSP and it's because I can get a much longer game for my PS3 for $10-20 more.
