Sony hoping to sell 11 million PS3s by end of fiscal year

Sony has enormous aspirations for their PlayStation 3 global success in both the short and long term. Long term, it is their goal to surpass the Xbox 360 and Wii to take back the #1 position that the PlayStation brand has so long held since the original in the mid 1990s.
In the meanwhile, the PlayStation 3 has outsold the Nintendo’s Wii console in Japan for the month of November. Additionally, the PS3’s sales have tripled in North America during the Thanksgiving holiday week in which the USD 100 price drop played a large role.
All of this, Sony hopes, will contribute to help the system hit the 11 million worldwide sales mark by the end of their current fiscal year. Kazuo Hirai, SCE Chief Executive explained that the PS3 "is starting afresh as a console to play games with. Although pricing strategy is important, now we would like to put our strength in the number of software games," adding that he expects the company’s game division to "escape as soon as possible from the red and return to the black in fiscal year 2008."
The year 2008 is what many is expecting to be the “breakout year” for the PS3 console as many key exclusives like Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 are due out. Before 2008 however, Sony still has the 2007 Christmas to hold faith it, which is only right around the corner.

11 million is pretty steep hoping they can sell approximately 6.5 million in the coming months. It's possible but I see them selling 9.5 mill close to 10

Sony’s ps3 was last again in n.america way behind the rest even the psp sold more, this where it's won or lost in n.america not europe because ps3 might be ahead in europe but not by much and it's way behind in n.america so only in japan does it really makes the numbers up a little unfortunately, at least in n.america it wasn't behind the gba this time.

If they really push their early 08 titles (GT5P, DMC4, Haze, GTA IV) then they could hit it. If the LBP delay rumor proves false and it gets out early next year, then hitting 11mil will be much easier as I've heard plenty of people say they would buy a PS3 for it. I won't be shocked if I see 11mil units sold by April.

Worldwide Number according to sony is 7 million PS3's. So that would mean 4 million by march of next year. The holidays will show whether they can make it or not.

as much as i would love for that to happen, im having serious doubts about it. this past saturday i went to best buy for some holiday shopping and i saw lots of consumers buying xbox 360's and the ps3 pile was pretty much just stagnant, which was really sad to see......psp's were flying off the shelves tho

They say the Wii is sold out all over UK but if you check all the major online stores there are plenty of bundles in stock. So either they are not out of stock as many people like to believe or the Wii on its own is out of stock and there are bundles left, this would suggest that PS3 is out of stock as there are only bundles to buy.

lets stop counting the wii in next gen sales figures,we all know its just a poor upgrade of the game cube,the graphics are poor n its so obvious it could never handle a game like ut3.just compare 360 n ps3 sales in the future.

im from europe and ps3s are being sold out as every child wants one for christmas. i have never heard some one saying they are going to get a xbox this year at all and wiis arent among teenagers list. ps3s are high on all their lists and i think 11million is an easy target but that is based only on what is happening in europe.

Sorry Sony, not gonna happen - though I wish you all the best. Why? Simply, I don't think that KZ 2 and MGS4 or GTAIV will be released in 2008, we'll see lots of delays in the next time I'm afraid :/

This shouldn't be a problem if two things happen.
1. MGS4, GT5, Killzone and FFXIII come out excluse to the PS3 and most are AAA "must have" type of titles. (Rated 9.5 and 10, by most reviewers).
2. Sony lowers the price down to $300 and bundles one of these games in before their end of year hits.
Without both of these things happening then 11 million isn't reasonable at all. 9 million will be almost impossible without them.
I hope that the new 45nm plant come online soon AND one of the above mentioned games comes out in spring.

Sony could easily sale 4mil in 3.5 months and that would equal out to 11 million ps3s sold. They will most definatly sell half to one million for chirstmas if not more and that would only leave them with 3.5 to 3 million left so I think its very posible plus the more ps3s sold the more people will notice how great they are and sells will go up, and if the games like MGS4 and KZ2 and LBP come out on time they will definatly sell 11mil if not more plus there are other games that are cool coming out Haze might sell a few and Home will sell a few aswell.
