Sony has moved to clarify a statement made at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show, in which the platform holder announced a total of 17 million subscribers for PlayStation Network.
Speaking to MTV, a company spokesperson revealed that the number included accounts that have been created not only on PlayStation 3, but also via the Internet and PlayStation Portable.
“The PSN numbers (17M and 2.1M) include people who have created accounts on PS3, the Web site and PSP,” he said.
“Note that since the implementation of single sign-on, PSN ID and PlayStation Underground IDs (which were often created at the same time when first making a PSN ID) were automatically merged and rolled over.”
“Additionally, since PSN is a free online gaming service, some households create multiple IDs so that a father can keep a separate list of friends, trophies and stats from that of his daughter for example,” he added.

How ridiculous, why release the figures when they're so worthless. Sony probably don't even have half that many user's in real terms.
From Rusty Spoon's and Strudel's posts alone there are 12 PSN accounts for 2 consoles sold, examples like this show that Sony's PSN figures will never be anywhere near accurate.
Edit: Ok, the amount of PSN accounts will be accurate, the amount of PS3 owners who use PSN will not be.

@9
Never be anywhere near accurate? They are simply stating the amount of PSN accounts, they never made any claim other than 17million PSN accounts. So how can that be inaccurate? Its just the number of PSN accounts that have been created/activated, so that is an accurate number. Same goes for XBOX Live or any other similar service, I'm sure a lot of people have created multiple XBOX Live accounts, Silver is free and if you dont play online, what does it matter.
Edit: Oh, and not to mention that XBOX Live can be used with PC games now and its totally free that way...

@9 MS is even worse for this. At least Sony is being honest. Live figures count every activated silver account even if it's just for registration and never used again, but instead of some real figures they just blow smoke out their *** and brag about it. The same way they have convinced themselves they are #1 this gen even though Nintendo has buried them.

I have four accounts on my PS3, but regardless, the point of calling it PlayStation Network is that it's supposed to span multiple platforms, so I don't see why people would really be surprised by this.

I LOVE THIS.
Someone honestly tell me that a responsible father has the time to play PS3?
OK i'll tell myself, many of them, after all it's a welcome relief from the hardship of bringing/dragging up a family.
But, please show me a grown man who really gives a shlt about trophies!?
I'm not dissing the trophy system, Honestly, but let's be honest; it's intended for 13 year old boys so they can brag to their friends that they have more.
EDIT.
@10
I agree with you to a large extent, after all if there are x amount of accounts and Sony proclaims X amount of accounts no truth has been violated.
However looking at the wording it states subscribers, to most this would imply a flesh and blood being IE X amount of people not accounts.
So from this alone Sony is guilty of deliberately extending the truth as far as sheer number of individual people who use the PSN.
That being said though i can't imagine a vast majority of PS3's have more than one login assigned to them.
Any grown man who honestly even looks at his trophies tab needs a serious slap, in the friendliest possible way of course, I'm not advocating wanton violence.

Whay can't a grown man and a father be interested in earning trophies? I am 27 I am pretty sure that is considered to be grown. I also have 3 kids and enjoy collecting trophies.

I only have one account for me and my girlfriend but like she rarely plays video games I really don't see the point of creating a second account. Trophys are alright but it would of been better if unlocking them actualy gave you a real reward for doing so.
