Sony’s Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda has confirmed that the platform holder currently has no plans to lower the price of its PlayStation 3 videogames console.
Speaking during an interview with Smart Money, Oneda commented, “Our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability.”
“Our plan is not to reduce the price,” he stated.
It is heavily rumoured that competitor Microsoft will announce a price reduction on the Xbox 360 Pro at the E3 Media and Business Summit next week, which will see the console drop to USD 299.

Ugh. The (over?)confidence continues. Everyone in the Sony main office is counting on at least 40% of PS2 owners converting to PS3. That's what they said months ago. "If 40-ish percent of PS2 owners (that's about 43 million conversions at that time) get a PS3 during its life span, they are fine with that. Problem is, the other 60% is a lot of people. But on the bright side, I still know people that have a PS2 because they still play SOCOM 2 online, waiting for SOCOM: Confrontation to be released. You non-SOCOM shooter types don't realize it, but that game has an incredible following.

The key to this statement is the word CURRENTLY have no plansto iintroduce a price drop, they didnt say it wont happen, and at the moment they are selling prety well, i also dont blame them as its a nice piece of kit that imo is worth its price tag. But like all technology goods prices will inevitably drop, its the way it is.

Cha, well. Sony has always denied having plans of dropping prices but has continually done it cuz they've had to.
Honestly, if MS drops their elite to $299 and Sony's weaker SKU is sitting at $399 people are going to be wondering just wtf Sony is thinking.
It's obvious that all the little shi+bags that havn't yet gotten a PS3 are merely doing so because they want the console for $200. Sony's biggest advantage (aside from some amazing games) was the fact that the PS2 was dirt cheap and just about anyone could get one. Now Sony should be seeing that most of it's fanbase were nothing but cheap fu(Ktards who went with the cheap hand and didn't care a stich about the whole console war at all. Case in point, a slightly cheaper 360 selling like hotcakes (in America at least). For the most part the 360 has been a mere $100 less than the PS3 but it seems thats just enough for those who are all about getting the cheapest (without heading to the Wii camp I suppose... then again, look at it's sales).

It makes sense. I doubt the have the flexibilty to lose more money in that department. Chances are they need to put their resources to better use.

Well, if they're not going to drop the price, Sony should make the $399 price point more justified. I mean, yeah, there's built in WI-FI, replaceable HDD... but for goodness sake, they need to include back the software emulator to enable the BC feature on the current 40GB models. on top of that, it wouldn't hurt to bundle it up with an extra controller/game to make the PS3 more enticing to buy.

I agree with dricks2080 Sony should bundle that crapy 40gig I hate how they did that and got rid of backwards compatibility and the mem card readers. I have the 60gig and going to get the metal gear bundle just because it has all the stuff that I really use. I dont want to have my ps2 in my media center there is no point for that.

I suppose this makes sense. Besides with the current SKUs on the market the cant expect hardly many PS2 owners to swich over. I still believe they are waiting to when production cost go low enough so they can then produce the perfect PS3 with the emotion engine and gpu back in, a bigger HDD and perhaps even the 90nm cell procecsorwill come back. It only makes sense. Time will tell.

I dont think any company would announce a price cut .....It makes people wait. My guess is that if there is a price cut at all, it would be announced shortly before black friday.(us)

Well no smart company would never admit to announcing a price cut ahead of time. That would be bad for business. When they do drop the price of the PS3, they are just gonna do it and not make some formal announcement ahead of time.

To dricks2080 and Kidkotic21 Why do you think the 40 gb ps3 was released in the first place? It would released because people complained about the ps3 being to expensive. So Sony did what they had to do and thats make a cheaper model ps3 for people. So that meant taking away a few extra features so that they can produce the console and sell it at a cheaper price. They would have lost way to much money if they would have sold the 40 gb ps3 at 399 with all the things the original 60 and 20 gb systems have.

To tell you the truth. The ps3 will still be cheaper then the xbox360 after xbox drop its price. look at what each system has. If a person walk to a store and look at what each system has to offer then they would go with the ps3. ps3- built in wi-fi, xbox add-on wi-fi is 100. ps3 399 make xbox 399. standard dvd for xbox if you dont buy the hd witch is more money. So bluray to standard dvd. free online to a 55 dollar a year bill for online. I know its only 55 dollars but still why pay for online. So from the system itself, the ps3 is just better and worth the extra 50 to 100 dollar. no need to add anything on. O, did i even say that on every system that is not the elite xbox that you have to add a hdmi port just to get hd 720 or better that cost about 70 dollars. Lets not talk about the RED RINGS!!! It was at 33% when the system first came out I know they are about at 62% by now, my friend got them the week MGS4 came out. The xbox360 that is about what 329.99 has a hd built in thats 512mb. thats about 7 songs and 5 game saves. lol. Be forreal!!! I can keep going on and on about there system but I dont have the time. Do your homework before you say sony ps3 price is to high. those little things is what my friends are talking about. once they realize and added everything up they came back to me and said sorry they did pay more. one of them paid 775 dollars for the system and all the add on.
psn id:I95SOUTH<--- I want a system with power and great games and good life. Without ps3 there wouldn't be psu and me meeting good people like the ones on my friend list. ps3 real deal!

@Punisher99::
well, true... they've rolled out the barebones model so that they could attract people with shallow pockets... however... with all these Firmware updates rolling out practically every so often, it would be pretty much a smart thing to do to sway those who haven't crossed the picket line (i'm talking about the PS2 owners who haven't crossed over yet) and slowly pull the plug off of the PS2 (it's got 3 more years before it becomes fully obsolete). i'm not asking for the card readers... those were useless features anyway when you can use the usb ports to accomplish the same things... i'm just saying that there's a huge pool of PS2 users. in order to sway them and have them jumped on the PS3 bandwagon, Sony needs to roll out an emulator firmware to enable the BC feature of the 40GB models... they could increase the hdd size if they want... or they could partner up with western digital to produce low cost hdds or people could pretty much walk to walmart and get a 320GB internal hdd or a 500GB external hdd for less than $150.00. either way, the only thing that's missing the justify that $399.00 price point is to bring back the feature that catered to the PS2 users. That's all I'm saying...

I don't know why they don't lower the price on the consoles to compete more with the 360 and make their money back on the software (games and blu-ray movies). If you sell more systems then you sell a lot more games. Right now I got 6 games for the system (not counting the downloaded stuff I payed for) and 2 blu-ray movies. That's over $400 worth of "software". Now I'm sure the people who made the games and the movies get their share of the profits, but if Sony pushed profiting off of making a lot of good games and movies, I think they'd make more money. They aren't going to get their money back on the consoles anyway. Besides, if they cut back on the cost of the console, then that person who bought it will have more money to spend on games and movies. When they don't sell a console because it's priced too high, that's not just $400-500 they're missing out on, that's more like $1,000 over the course of a few months because that person isn't buying their games, or blu-ray movies. Of course I'm sure Sony does market research and does all the numbers, but statistics and numbers can lie.

like they would tell us if they had plans for a price cut, i think what they need to do is bring a nice 80gb bundle in with BC and keep the 399 price tag because its definitely worth that and people know that now i think, its hands down a better value even if the price on the 360 drops

If MS drops the 360 price then Sony should do something. They can't re-package what's already on store shelves. They could provide online vouchers for a free game, EyeToy, BT headset, a couple of BR movies w/remote, or additional controller with the purchase of a $400 PS3.

@dricks2080. I dont necesarily dissagree with you. But I guess its all about money. Now when sony first introduced the 40gb PS3. They did say that if the demand for PS2 backwards compatiblity got high enough. That it would make its return to the console. But in a way. I guess it already has. 80gb PS3 MGS4 bundle. So really. All Sony needs to do is continue producing the 80gb PS3 sku.

why ask 4 a price cut when right now we're basic ripping off sony buying ps3's at 400-500$. i recently went to best buy and noticed that ur average bluray player price ranges from 3-4 hundred $ so compared to that a ps3 with wifi the ability to play game the built-in bluray XMB feature its a steal at its current price any less would mean a loss in profit which sony cant afford at the moment. sony fanboy psn id: ÁØGDØØm§dA¥

they defo gotta price cut,but i agree not announce it ,the ps3 is totally worth it the price its at but things arnt as simple as that.alot of people will just wanna buy a console for them self or kids or family member, they just walk into the shop and see the big 3(wii/360/ps3) and just get the cheapest.just look at the wii sales to prove it,the ps3 needs to at least be as cheap as the 360,forget abou the wii,it aint next gen anyway.

Price Cut - Sick of hearing about it honestly...if you live in Australia you will PAY $639-$799 for the PS3, so stop your whining USA. Our exchange rate is a few cents difference , and yet the price is 40% HIGHER !!!
Despite the price I'll buy one when $ONY delivers the PS3 as it was promised.
DS3 and everything else its ripped out to increase its profit$
I and many others will not buy a PS3 with crappy DS2 controllers when the rest of the world pays HALF THE PRICE for a BETTER SKU.
FU $ONY
