Sony to release firmware patch this week?

Posted on July 7th, 2008 at 11:45 EDT

According to reports from website CVG, Sony customer support has divulged that the platform holder is planning on releasing an update to last week’s Firmware 2.40 on Wednesday.

Released last week, Firmware 2.40 contained the hotly anticipated in-game XMB and Trophy support, though it was soon pulled after Sony became aware of multiple problems associated with the update.

However, reports states that an update, Patch 2.41, will become available on July 9 in an effort to rectify the problem, though an official announcement has yet to be made.

In response to whether or not Sony is aware of such reports, a representative told VG247, “I saw them," adding, “I can’t confirm anything at the moment, though.”

Stay tuned for further information as it becomes available.

Hmmm, I haven't experienced any problems with the 2.4 patch. You would've thought that Sony would have done rigourous testing and figured it out before releasing. What about sony being hacked? Was that all BS or what?

i'm sure sony went through the whole debugging and testing phase, but as you know with software nothing is 100% bug free. not to mention with everyone saying "where's 2.4?" i'm sure that added some pressure to the realease of the firmware as well. that's why good thing come to those who wait. when you rush something before its ready, expect issues to arise.

Ever since I downloaded 2.4 I've noticed a slight stutter when playing Oblivion, especially when running around the the open map. Could 2.4 be to blame or have I've just noticed it for the first time cos I'm looking for these mysterious bugs?? Other than that 2.4 seems to be fine. HDD is still intact :)

@ JMedders

AFAIK there are no "bugs" with the day to day operation of Firmware 2.4, it has to do with installation of the Firmware, or booting after the install.  The official word is that if it installed, and your PS3 boots afterward, then you are golden.

what problems are they talking about? i've been using it 2.4 with no problems except for the fact that no games have music or trophy support, which is the developers responsibility.

I've seen no problems with 2.40 on my end but I do remember slight bugs in an earlier firmware release that Sony rectified in a similar matter. Regardless, a patch is on its way and everyone should like the new features.

Cheers

I gotta tell ya, I even though I'd like some information, I love Sony's stance on answering rumors.  It's always better not to show your hand until you're ready.  That's why it was so surprising that 2.4 had issues.

where have you all been hiding that you don't know about the booting issue with 2.4; a lot of people couldn't boot their PS3 anymore after updating to 2.4 and they had to get it replaced (meaning they lost all saved data)

Those of you complaining of not getting 2.4 in time before it was removed, you should be greateful, what if you where one of the unlucky ones that your PS3 breaks after 2.4, I'm sure you'd be pissed, so waiting 1 extra week for a solid build is really good.  I wouldn't want my 60GB PS3 to break (BTW, most problems have occurred in the 60GB sku)

@JMedders: I've had a problem with CoD4 as well and it normally stems from not logging on after a week or more. I don't get a chance to play as much as I would like to so when I do get on I normally have wait a really long time before I get the list of available matches (team deathmatch, free-for-all, etc). One time I waited over an hour! But again, I think it's due to the fact that I have co-workers who play EVERYDAY while I'm lucky if I get on more than 3 times a month. My guess is the problem you're having is not stemming from 2.40 but (maybe) from having not played in a while.

This has really gone beyond rediculous now. It seems like everytime something looks great and grand for Sony and this, there is some holdup. Though I am well aware that this is not the case, it's just beginning to feel that way.

yeah i downloaded 2.4 from the internet and my ps3 has been working as good as ever not very many people were affected badly by it but still i think it is a good thing that sony pulled it just to make sure although the headlines on most sites are absolutely rediculous saying that 2.4 is a widespread problem

edit: i have a 60gb american launch sku i think what happened was that with some people not all the packets of data were downloaded correctly which corrupted their hdd not so much that it fried the system which is what it sounds like from reports because if your firmware is incomplete your system wont boot correctly obviously so maybe it was more of a server issue than an actual software issue anyway it doesnt matter its being taken care and an extra week is really not that horrible

If you put your HDD into a computer that can accept it ,you can format it and your Playstation 3 will work again.

people are always going on about how they never heard of the people affected by these updates but sony wouldnt put it offline if it wasnt causing problems. I know after 2.10 my ps3 broke down and it had to get replaced so the firmwares do sometimes brick ps3s. I also have numerous friends who say 2.40 wrecked their ps3s.

So you have many friends, good for you. Numerous friends with a bricked PS3 due to the 2.4 update sounds like a lie. But who am I to judge. If you say so, I must believe you. And they didn't shut down their PS3's while doing the update or something? How many is numerous by the way?

My 60gig system has never had any issues with the updates, unfortunately I seem to be the only one on the planet with a graphics glitch in MGS4.   Not much of a big deal with 2.40 since I only have 1 game that supports trophies and 2 games that allow custom soundtracks so far.

The Playstation 3 hasn't even been out for 2 years yet.  So the time it took them to implement this would start counting from the release date, and thus it took them less than 2 years to implement it.  Not 3!!!!!!!!

Ok ive had a similar problem with a firmware update, it was 2.0 after i booted the ps3 it ran for 15mins and shut down on its own.  When i turned it back on it failed to load the OS and all i got was a green flashing light.  Well i sent my ps3 to the LOCAL sony service center and they repaired my 60gig and sent it back to me.  two days after i got it back i replaced it with a 320gig and my ps3 has run smoothly even with the 2.4 update, so heres crossing my fingers that v2.41 fixes the problem and doesnt cause anymore. I believe that with any piece of hardware that has firmware updates, you are running the chance of a complete system failure.  as long as the firmware downloads and installs properly then theoretically there should only be .99% chance of failure.

I have had audio crackling when playing games, movies and lisiting to music. I use hdmi and when I bring up the in game xmb the problem is gone but when I take it down it starts up again. I never had any problem before the update. It feels like a compatability issue possibly with the hdmi and firmware. Also youtube does not run as smooth and audio is herky jerky and video goes out of synch at times.

They showed in-game XMB at E3 in 2005. Meaning it had to be in the works somewhat for the system itself. I thought it was going to be in the system when I purchased November 2006. Now it is 2008, the video I saw in 2005 was more then enough for me to think it was in there a year later. 2005 - 2008 is 3 years. This is specific to in-game XMB, a feature that should of been implemented from launch.

I have 2.4 installed too, and since I installed it, sound sometimes skips a few seconds. I think its more of a memory issue they have found. I think its memeory because if I restart my PS3 from scratch and play a game directly, the sound works perfectly.

Before 2.4 i had no sound issues.

NO, IT DOES NOT WORK FINE!  At least type it works fine for you.  It most certainly didn't work fine for me.  Now, it didn't brick my system, but I still lost all data due to my fix action, and now my trophies don't work anymore (SSHD will not record anymore of my trophy rewards).  2.40 was the biggest disaster so far.  I say this every post (wish I could have a signature stating it).  "Just because you are experiencing something doesn't mean everybody is having the same experience...or sees it the same way as you and your 2 friends."
