Sony to release firmware patch this week?

According to reports from website CVG, Sony customer support has divulged that the platform holder is planning on releasing an update to last week’s Firmware 2.40 on Wednesday.

Released last week, Firmware 2.40 contained the hotly anticipated in-game XMB and Trophy support, though it was soon pulled after Sony became aware of multiple problems associated with the update.

However, reports states that an update, Patch 2.41, will become available on July 9 in an effort to rectify the problem, though an official announcement has yet to be made.

In response to whether or not Sony is aware of such reports, a representative told VG247, “I saw them," adding, “I can’t confirm anything at the moment, though.”

Stay tuned for further information as it becomes available.

Hmmm, I haven't experienced any problems with the 2.4 patch. You would've thought that Sony would have done rigourous testing and figured it out before releasing. What about sony being hacked? Was that all BS or what?

i'm sure sony went through the whole debugging and testing phase, but as you know with software nothing is 100% bug free. not to mention with everyone saying "where's 2.4?" i'm sure that added some pressure to the realease of the firmware as well. that's why good thing come to those who wait. when you rush something before its ready, expect issues to arise.

Ever since I downloaded 2.4 I've noticed a slight stutter when playing Oblivion, especially when running around the the open map. Could 2.4 be to blame or have I've just noticed it for the first time cos I'm looking for these mysterious bugs?? Other than that 2.4 seems to be fine. HDD is still intact :)

    @ JMedders

AFAIK there are no "bugs" with the day to day operation of Firmware 2.4, it has to do with installation of the Firmware, or booting after the install.  The official word is that if it installed, and your PS3 boots afterward, then you are golden.

    • 12:17pm BST - July 7th, 2008

what problems are they talking about? i've been using it 2.4 with no problems except for the fact that no games have music or trophy support, which is the developers responsibility.

Not seeing any problems on my ps3 either. Installed just fine and has been working great since. How much do you wanna bet that this update will fix the messed up ps3s and kill the working ones...

    • 12:23pm BST - July 7th, 2008

I've seen no problems with 2.40 on my end but I do remember slight bugs in an earlier firmware release that Sony rectified in a similar matter. Regardless, a patch is on its way and everyone should like the new features.

    Cheers

I gotta tell ya, I even though I'd like some information, I love Sony's stance on answering rumors.  It's always better not to show your hand until you're ready.  That's why it was so surprising that 2.4 had issues.

I don't think its that big of a surprise that it would be back out this week. Might even been for the end of next week, but with the 4th of July and all.

where have you all been hiding that you don't know about the booting issue with 2.4; a lot of people couldn't boot their PS3 anymore after updating to 2.4 and they had to get it replaced (meaning they lost all saved data)

Those of you complaining of not getting 2.4 in time before it was removed, you should be greateful, what if you where one of the unlucky ones that your PS3 breaks after 2.4, I'm sure you'd be pissed, so waiting 1 extra week for a solid build is really good.  I wouldn't want my 60GB PS3 to break (BTW, most problems have occurred in the 60GB sku)

    • 12:50pm BST - July 7th, 2008

FYI my 60 gig works fine with 2.40

    • 12:51pm BST - July 7th, 2008

@JMedders: I've had a problem with CoD4 as well and it normally stems from not logging on after a week or more. I don't get a chance to play as much as I would like to so when I do get on I normally have wait a really long time before I get the list of available matches (team deathmatch, free-for-all, etc). One time I waited over an hour! But again, I think it's due to the fact that I have co-workers who play EVERYDAY while I'm lucky if I get on more than 3 times a month. My guess is the problem you're having is not stemming from 2.40 but (maybe) from having not played in a while.

This has really gone beyond rediculous now. It seems like everytime something looks great and grand for Sony and this, there is some holdup. Though I am well aware that this is not the case, it's just beginning to feel that way.

2.40 works just fine........ ive had no problems what so ever.

    • 1:18pm BST - July 7th, 2008

yeah i downloaded 2.4 from the internet and my ps3 has been working as good as ever not very many people were affected badly by it but still i think it is a good thing that sony pulled it just to make sure although the headlines on most sites are absolutely rediculous saying that 2.4 is a widespread problem

edit: i have a 60gb american launch sku i think what happened was that with some people not all the packets of data were downloaded correctly which corrupted their hdd not so much that it fried the system which is what it sounds like from reports because if your firmware is incomplete your system wont boot correctly obviously so maybe it was more of a server issue than an actual software issue anyway it doesnt matter its being taken care and an extra week is really not that horrible

Same here firmware 2.40 has been awesome and is running awesome. This was a great update but the current trophy support is rubbish. I hope RSV2 and BFBC will have trophies soon two.

does anyone know how this repair will work? once the system is bricked can the new update do anything about it or is it too late, the hard drive needs to be  replaced? sony can't make people pay for something that they screwed up, can they? thanks in advance for any help.

i dont have 2.4 my internet was down the day it came out and i couldnt download it before work. i really want this. and this timeframe would make sense because the burnout paradise cagney update is out on july 10th. and i dont think criterion is wanting to push that back since they have been talking about it for like a month. i guess they will if they have too but sony had about a week to get this corrected. so heres hoping

    @ sefiroh

If you put your HDD into a computer that can accept it ,you can format it and your Playstation 3 will work again.

I haven't had any problems with this firmware, so im not worried. Hope this fixes all the problems with others.

Where is the people with the so called problem with 2.40? I havn't seen one yet. Sounds like a very, very minor problem to me. My 60G launchday PS3 works fine with the new patch. Anyone with a bricked PS3 due to the update reading this, please respond...

    i figured there would be...

i had a problem where the ps3 froze while i was in game and i was accessing the xmb to reply to a message when it froze.. :/

people are always going on about how they never heard of the people affected by these updates but sony wouldnt put it offline if it wasnt causing problems. I know after 2.10 my ps3 broke down and it had to get replaced so the firmwares do sometimes brick ps3s. I also have numerous friends who say 2.40 wrecked their ps3s.

  38. ecentre

    • 3:13pm BST - July 7th, 2008

So you have many friends, good for you. Numerous friends with a bricked PS3 due to the 2.4 update sounds like a lie. But who am I to judge. If you say so, I must believe you. And they didn't shut down their PS3's while doing the update or something? How many is numerous by the way?

Of course there is a reason, Freeses, lag and stuff, but maybe, just maybe not due to the rumor that it is bricking PS3's  !?!

My 60gig system has never had any issues with the updates, unfortunately I seem to be the only one on the planet with a graphics glitch in MGS4.   Not much of a big deal with 2.40 since I only have 1 game that supports trophies and 2 games that allow custom soundtracks so far.
