Star Ocean 4 to Xbox 360; PS3 version "undecided"

In a shocking announcement today, Square Enix has revealed that the upcoming fourth installment in its Star Ocean franchise – officially titled Star Ocean: The Last Hope -- will be coming to Microsoft's Xbox 360 in 2009.
Although previously coy as to which system the game would be released on, it had been widely accepted the forthcoming RPG would ultimately hit the PlayStation 3, a belief largely attributed to the fact many past titles in the series were released on to Sony platforms.
However, speaking in Tokyo today, the Japanese software giant stated that the highly anticipated game would in fact hit the Xbox 360 some time next year. No indication was given as to whether or not it would remain exclusive to the Microsoft console, with the possibility of a PS3 version currently "undecided."
"We cannot announce anything on that. We can say that it will be released first [on the Xbox 360]. Whether we'll release it on the PS3 is undecided. We may release it, we may not,” commented Square Enix’s Yoshinori Yamagish.
Make of it what you will, but for now, the game’s future on the PS3 remains decidedly ambiguous.

Microsoft threw them so much money for a JRPG that they couldn't say no. Microsft is desperate for Japan to like them and it's kinda funny. I doubt Star Ocean will pull them in though. Dragon Quest would.

Alright ya know what, this is really pissin me off. This has gone too far. One of the only reasons I got a PS3 is becuase I knew Square Enix was going to back it up. I forgave them when they started doing games for the 360 but enough is enough. I'm tired of developers doing this crap because they THINK it will sell better on the 360 because of it's large user base. I'm also tired of Microsoft paying off developers to do this sort of thing. It's all cool though becuase when MGS 4 and SOCOM hit big, (and they will) Square will see the light. It's articles like this that make me not want to buy an Xbox.

I don't think anyone really realizes how big SOCOM is. That's huge. I'm glad they pushed Killzone 2 back (not that they appeal to the same type of gamer, anyway).

Well, to me, it sounds like SE is literally (and publicly) asking for m$ to pay them to keep SO exclusive. So let me finish their statement: "We may release it, we may not. It entirely depends on whether Microsoft would be willing to consider Star Ocean a viable product for the Xbox 360 platform." That right there, ladies and gents, is how you sell out without losing so much face. I almost emailed activision last night about having the 360 as the lead platform for CoD5. I wanted to let them know that they're pretty much wasting money on a PS3 port, and they really shouldn't bother. All games are made better with ps3 leading and if they refuse to do it then they won't be getting any of my $. Then again, they probably have all they need from m$.

I'm a used reader of psu and i registered only because this news really shocked me...
Square-enix is the reason why i brought my ps3... Look at the sources... they even announced it for Last Ramanent...
The only thing we can do it's to buy it if it's come out on PS3... and expect that PS3 version will be more sucessfull (in sales, because this will be a %*$/&" port...)

This is outrageous Micro$oft are pathetic Star Ocean. Oh what happened on the first three I don't know because this çrap çompany decides to give a large sum of çash to keep it exclusive. Anyway we do indeed have a superior RPG made by Square enix I think its Final Fantasy

I'm really pissed about the lack of RPG's. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like first person shooters but the PS3 has become far to saturated with that genre. We are in desperate need of something different.
360 now has:
Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean, The Last Remenant, Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odessey and more...
Of course some of the above are or could be multi platform. Multi platform sounds fair right? Well, it isn't anymore since Microsoft seems to be getting first dibs on every frickin' game. What about ES for ps3? So far it looks like it will be staying in Japan. What good is that to those who don't speak japenese?
Who is to blame here? Is it the Devs? Sony? Or both? I'd say both. However, the biggest thorn in everyones side is Microsoft. I've been tempted to buy a 360 so I could get my hands on these games but I really do not approve of Microsoft monopolizing the gaming industry; this is the only thing right now keeping me from buying a 360 and supporting microsoft.
Sony really needs to secure more games from microsofts clutches to remain a serious competitor in this market.

Will never buy another Xbox, been burnt too many times. Down with Microsoft. Fortunately I'm only interested in the very best RPG's like Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII anyway but I'm disappointed for pure RPG enthusiasts.

i thought sony had a big stake in square enix,i think sony should start doing what ea n microsoft have been doing n buy some serious company`s like square enix n capcom n take 2 that alone would ensure they win not just this console war but the next.looking at the xbox it really should not be surviving cause its sits between the ps3 a hard core gaming machine and the wii a bit of fun for kids machine,only m$ money is holding it up...i wonder if anybody from sony ever reads these posts.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope = Xbox 360?Yeah something doesn't seem right here... oh well, whatever the outcome, im glad i own both. But if it IS announced for the PS3, sure i will be getting it in that, whether i have to wait for it or not.

God they were so embarrased to announce it they waited a freaking year for this, even after watching RPG after RPG bomb on the 360? I thought we were done with this after the first two waves bombed miserably and Square and Namco both decided to wait before announcing platforms? They wait, more games bomb on the 360 and what do they do they still announce them for Japan's worst console?
It's amazing how short sighted the Japanese developers are being...MS must be paying rediculous amounts of money, I don't remember any other manufacturer getting this kind of BS...not Nintendo, not Sega, and now not even Sony...WTF.
I don't think anyone would be shocked if a western developer took a little bribe money to make a FPS timed exclusive for the 360, but Japanese gamers should be furious.

lol @ Square-Enix... So if you want to play all games of Star Ocean series, PSP is gonna get the first and second ones (already on SNES and Playstation1), Playstation 2/3 has the third... "oh, oh let's make the fourth on xbox360, that's were the fans of the series are" WTF?! lol
Seriously, I know why they aren't announcing for PS3 at least middle-end of 2009. If FFXIII releases on the same period that Star Ocean on PS3, Star Ocean would sell very, very, very bad... lol

The way things are going, everything is possible.Truelly FFXIII could be ported to the 360.Sony doesn't pay for exclusive titles so nothing holds back SE from making this move.And it seams SE wasn't very pleased with their financial situation lately, so they are ready to do everything possible to change this.This is really a shocking news......................

what i can't understand is the point of even porting the first two star ocean games to psp and then have the fourth of the 360. O.o I mean all of the past game will be on a sony console (considering the port of the first game) so why suddenly switch to 360. I mean i remember SE saying they dont want any console to win the next gen race, but this is ridiculous. The only SE exclusive is the ff13 games and even they could end up going to another console. The main reason for getting a ps3 was for the rpgs. So far we only have a port of a 360 enchanted arms.
360 will have: Lost Oddyssey, Blue Dragon (rumoured LO2 and BD2), Eternal Sonata, last remnant, star ocean 4, tales of vesperia, Infinite undiscovery + western rpg's: mass effect, oblivion, fallout 3, too human, fable 2
and the ps3 has: ff13, versus 13, white knight + western rpgs: oblivion, fallout 3.
(last remnant being a timed exclusive and eternal sonata port vanishing).
wtf? lol.
i've given up on kh3 being a sony platform game now, i seriously wouldn't be surprised if that moved to the wii or 360.

This is heIla GAY!.....SE is pushing it bigtime. I also don't care if they sell their @ss to MS and go multiplat, once the RPG's I want from them comes to the PS3 aswell. It already isn't rolling over too well that we are not getting infinite undiscovery......SO4 was one of the RPG's I was really looking forward to getting......this blows mega ape nu s and is total weak sauce.

MS is getting smart. Instead of mystwalker they should have done this from the beginning. I see my 360 is going to get some Jrpg lovin'. We all know how this is going to end if these JRPG titles don't bost the 360 in japan.
Well I am still waiting for some PS3 exclusives such as white knight story, Final fantasy 13 and Steambot Chronicles part 2. People freaking out about this needs to seek help. I will go out here and say that eternal sonata, lost odessey and blu dragon aren't titles that should make PS3 owners toss in their sleep. Personally I felt that mystwalkers efforts even though ambitious, feels cliche'd and lame and eternal sonata was a gameplay mechanic or two from being enjoyable.
I sure hope future JRPG's are much better than the offering so far. (enchant arms doesn't exist.....enchant arms doesn't exist.....enchant arms doesn't exist.....enchant arms doesn't exist.....)

I agree completely. Blue dragon and lost oddesey aren't anything PS3 user should scoff at not having. I have them on my 360, and they were fun and worth the purchase, but just not as good as everything makes them out to be. However, If I only owned a PS3 I would be pissed(and for good reason) about this news. I am excited about this game, and I guess I have to buy it on my 360. I tell you, the last couple weeks of news from Sony's camp has not been good. I had one or two people say I don't like the PS3 because of my comments, but that is simply not true, it's just not my fault that alot of recent news has been bad. I do hope that FF13 and White Knight Story stay exclusive, but at this point I wouldn't be surprised if we were to find that wasn't the case. I hope Sony starts getting their act together, and looks at what made the PS2 such a success, and instill that into the PS3.

Everybody knows that the PS3 is by far the superior console, The majority of games on the PS3 are FPS. I'm tired of developers acting like a bunch of T.W.@ ,T$ and cowering behind the 360. SE needs to be true to SONY, the PS3 need a great deal of RPGS, but guess wat MGS4 will be out soon, M$ can have SO4 cause we have the Superior RPG Final Fantasy and i will be damned if FF goes to 360

WTF? Alright this is insane at this point I read the title of the article thinking that they might make it on the 360 after down on the PS3, but this. Seriously what is SE and Tri-ace thinking by doing this. All the SO games (except the 1st) have been on a Sony platform and now they decide to go ahead onto the 360. Why not just attached a suicide note onto the game now will you.
