One of the biggest rumours about Sony's keynote speech heading into this year’s Tokyo Game Show was a possible announcement of a price cut for the PlayStation 3. Many gamers and industry analysts believe that a price cut could help the PlayStation 3 this coming holiday season as the console remains the most expensive and the least selling out of the Wii and Xbox 360 (bar Japan, where the 360 lags far behind). However, as the Sony keynote revealed, there won't be any price cut for the time being.
"Price is a very important aspect, but at the same time the urgent matter is to what extent we can further enrich the software titles," said Hirai in regards to price. However, he did hint that there is a “possibility” that a price cut could emerge in the future.
Past history suggests that Sony, as with other companies, will continue to deny any price cuts before springing one on us anyway. Thus, there is still hope for a less expensive PS3 this holiday season.

damn!
They cant just announce a $100 price cut before every major gaming industry event. People act like $499 and $599 SKUs are too high.
The price cut is going to be closer to X-mas.
getting a blu-ray player and a console all in 1 and yet ppl want it to b cheaper....stupid consumers holy crap...u try building one of these with $600 to see if its even enough to make 1 u idiots seriously...with every system they are losing 300 tops and yet u guys want em to loose more...dumbasses
really if your not willing to pay a price thats alredy good for what you get then f*** off and b a 360 fanboy
psn id; gingo... i think they should have a price cut so more units are sold because they are failing just now
To the people who thought a price cut/new 40GB sku was gonna rise from the ashes at TGS don't know business and the staregies behind it. This is a chess match not a round of uno, say sony annouced this and everybody who had been waiting for it, flock to stores only to be told that they're out of stock or have yet to arrive to stores, then you'll have some hot customers and it will only lok bad on sony, not the store. If the new sku turns out to be true, Sony needs to get a stockpile of them because it'll be like the wii last holidays and again it will only look bad for sony and parents alike will look for something more readily available. I'm looking at the anniversary of the PS3 for it's next price cut/new sku which is a Saturday (new sales at retail) and a week before the BIG holiday rush, anyway just my prediction(s)....
Basically, he's saying that untill we get more exclusive titles on the shelf it dosent make sense to drop the price since the system hasnt had a chance to truely sell with a reason and purpose. Put more cool games out and people will find the money for the time being and they get to keep from bleeding too hard for another 6 months or so as they would if they dropped the price.
bah. 600$ is nothing when you realize what youve bought. I happily paid 600$ for mine. and if they would have made it with a complete cell for more $, i would have paid that too.
They always deny it then release it. Result : No credibility. Anything that Sony says is usually BS - that's just how it is now days. Refuse to comment - fine, but dont lie.
Everyone knows the sales drop with rumble hits at Christmas. The big problem with waiting so long is they are loosing more publishers as time goes on. They really should be more aggressive in building the platform base. Drop the price now before Xbox360 CPU gets to 65nm otherwise Microsoft will have a big price advantage and will have solved the heating problem. Drop the price now and steal the action - if they can get to 20 million users quickly they can still survive otherwise its going to get ugly at Sony.
We wont get any good games if 50% of a small user base is in japan. Next they will be forced to buy some small studio's and rely on first party titles to get them through. This is a complete reversal of fortunes with Nintendo becoming playstation and Sony becoming gamecube. The difference though was Nintendo has lots of cash now Sony doesn't. 2 years ago I could not imagine this happening - now I'm just shocked at Sony being so out of control.
dont care still gonna get one
oh yeah does anyone know if the there are any 40GB systems left or even 20GB? I cant seem to find any
why would they announce it now? everyone would just wait and sony would lose Tons 'o cash
theyll anounce it in November i bet there is going to be the New Sixaxis bundled and a good game all for 400$.. For the 1 year birthday of the PS3, (i just thought all this up in my head) but it does seem possible.. and would make alot of sense
Its not that they don't want to announce a price cut. Its because they can't since every single customer would obviously wait out and buy a PS3 when the price cut occurs. All PR, a price cut will definitely happen, hopefully with the announcement of the new $399 40GB PS3.
IMHO, 499 should be the top of the line and then a 399, 599 scares too many people off. I mean I think its worth it but most won't, cause people see the PS3 as a console......and its hard to show its other than that before christmas......
I think this is a cover up. They want to surprise us with a BIG PRICE CUT then everybody would want a PS3 (I could be dreaming)
Fantastic, Yakk! Your a goddamn genious!
why the heck didn't I think of that (cos youre stupid)
(...shut up) I dont want to get one of those expensive one 60GB
Humm? I wonder if they sell those SATA hard drives at ebay too
good idea. Great Thanks! - Good Job! (thumbs up)
Patcher predicted a price cut at TGS, I also thought this would happen and when I read of Patcher's predictions (even though he's wrong 9 out of 10 times) I did think does Patcher have some inside infomation? As he predicted Microsoft would announce their price drop at E3 and later in an interview he said "So I was 5 weeks out" A lucky guess maybe?
My point is that price drop announcements don't always come at these conferences. Sony announced the PS3 price drop a day or so before their conference at E3 and then Microsoft anounced a Price drop 5 weeks after.
It also makes no sense to announce NA price drops at TGS. If there was a price drop announcement at TGS, it would be for Japan.
So saying that I think its still possible for Sony to drop the price of the 80gb PS3 this year as it doesn't make sense to sell the 80gb for $600 when they've been selling the 60gb for $500. The price drop I think will be November as the PS3 will be a year old and for a Euro price drop, will be late March - early April
they will reduce the price soon. Give them 2 weeks
Well that's good for sony, they'll get a few more sales so we can get ahead of the other loser consoles.
Its dangerous if the price drop isnt big enough because then they will still have slow sales and less dollars per sale = disaster. The price drop has to be meaningful and without games backing it up and the other consoles ready to discount as well Sony's next move must be bold.
I still maintain that it will be the 80GB model at US$399. I'm certainly not alone on this. If so I think PS3 will be on its way finally and it could make up the lost ground over 2008. Publishers will hedge bets and begin supporting PS3.
The 40GB idea wont work for quite a few reasons. Infact if Sony relies on a 40GB model to hit $399 I predict that Sony will have major inventory problems first quarter 2008 and will take a very big hit. It's like Microsoft is goading them into taking the 40GB route. It will be a slaughter.
If Sony doesnt cut by much and instead tries to sell PS3 as a Bluray - I give Sony 12 months survival at best. Why? Because as a retailer it is not worth the trouble selling a console one at a time - trying to convince customers to spend up on something "specialised". Its too hard and there are no profit margins in selling the Playstation. Because there is also little software sales retailers would start dropping shelf space and program participation. At the same time publishers will effectively ignor Playstation.
They are going to launch a 40GB ps3 before the holiday season, otherwise i don't see a reason for them to ask Foxconn to make a "cheap" ps3.
price cut mid november early december at the latest 40 gig good idea but an 80 gig price cut would be more pluasible. 399$ for a ps3 is not a bad deal you want bigger space go buy a new hardrive.
I still cant believe japan gets rumble sixaxis before we do NA are the ones with the largest fan base and wanted it the most japanese like wii more than ps3. Gives us the controller the same time the japs get it I hope they suprise us with that announcement. (They probably cant make enough for America's demands so they give it to the japs and in 2008 they will have enough for us.)
Im just going off the top of my head here but you know what would be funny if the new 40 gig comes with rumble so all the die hard fans go out and buy another ps3 just for the controller lol. Hey say not a bad idea get on that one Sony lol. (if that does happen member gentlemen it was my idea.)
It hasn't even been 3 f**king months since the last $100 price drop!!! What the f*** is your guy's problems? You can't just drop the price $200 before the console is a year old. Don't be ignorant. And if Sony tries to make another SKU (40GB), they might as well just shoot themselves. It's a waste of money, for Sony and the consumers. Sony because it's wasted manufacturing time and the consumer because hard drives fill up fast with demos and videos. I guess it could entice people to buy one and upgrade to a 250GB hard drive. Either way, I hate this generation for the simple fact that new SKUs keep getting released after a few months, leaving earlier buyers annoyed. I was kind of annoyed when Sony showed the 80GB and dropped the price 4 months after I got my 60GB. Sony should just offer 80GB and 250GB hard drives and be done with it. Microsoft can only go up to 150GB if they continue using their Raptor hard drives. If you still need the PS3 to be cheaper to buy it, get bent f***tard.
your annoyed by 20 more gigs of space? i mean 80 gig isnt even enough room for me. upgrade by buying a 160gb hardrive or up. and wernt they advertising the 80 gig when they dropped the 60 gig price? i could be wrong but im pretty sure inferno is
@alchemy: If you read my post closely, it said "I was kind of annoyed when Sony showed the 80GB and dropped the price 4 months after I got my 60GB." I'm not annoyed at the additional 20GBs of space being added, I'm annoyed at the fact that both MS and Sony change SKUs as much as they do. MS dropped the Core and made the Elite and Halo 3 edition about a year and a half after the system launch, to the dismay of earlier 360 owners. Sony dropped the 20GB, lowered the 60GB, and brought in the 80GB (and maybe a 40GB), all within 8 months.
And to clear up any confusion, I bought my 60GB before there was any wind of an 80GB bundle. That's why I was annoyed. I hate the constantly changing SKUs. Last gen, there was one model to pick, take it or leave it. Sure the PS2 got a redesign, but nothing changed on it apart from adding an Ethernet port. Now in the current gen, a new model comes out everytime it becomes plausible to add a bigger hard drive. It should be set to basic and premium versions, with a redesign later on in life. We don't need 4 versions of the PS3 and 360 to try to satisfy everyone. It's nice to make cheaper versions for consumers, but you won't sell any of them if you can't step up on the games.
