Dead Central has reported that the Silent Hill movie franchise is set for a “fresh start” following the disappointing and critically-panned Return to Silent Hill from Christophe Gans earlier this year.
Details are currently thin on the ground but the news comes in wake of the $100 box office opening for the latest Resident Evil movie, which is directed by Zach Cregger. Apparently, a “bold new take” on the Silent Hill movie franchise is now in the works, presumably in an attempt to capture some of success of other big-name horror films like Resident Evil.
The original Silent Hill movie was directed by Gans and came out 20 years ago, and was loosely based on the events of the original entry in Konami’s psychological horror video game series. The film stars Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean was Radha and Christopher Da Silva, respectively, a couple who have adopted a girl named Sharon, who has mysterious ties to the town of Silent Hill. Sharon begs her mother to take her there while Christopher remains at home, only for Rose to end up crashing outside town and Sharon vanishes into the foggy streets.
Silent Hill Revelation followed in 2012 and is a loose adaptation of Silent Hill 3, following a now-teenage Sharon (Adelaide Clemens), renamed Heather, who attempts to live a normal life away from Silent Hill with her father (played once again by Sean Bean). However, her past soon catches up with her and she is dragged back to the town after details of her past come to light, something which her father has attempted to keep hidden all these years.
Finally, Return to Silent Hill came out earlier this year and saw Gans attempting to bring the events of Silent Hill 2 to the big screen. Here, we find James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) called back to the abandoned town by his true love, Mary (Hannah Emily Anderson), after being separated for some time. Upon arriving, he finds the streets encased in fog and malevolent creatures roaming freely in town, as he struggles to come to terms with what happened to him and Mary years before.
