Target receives new PS3 SKU to release post-GDC

According to Joystiq, a tipster has tipped them off regarding a new addition to the PlayStation 3 family of SKUs. Apparently, Target has received shipments of PlayStation 3s that no longer just carry the console inside. Instead, Sony has packaged its console with two of the system's best sellers, Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm. While this may seem like a small addition to the already extinct MotorStorm bundle, it certainly adds a little value to the overall package.

Unfortunately, the SKU is releasing with the famed $399 price tag that both developers and cautious consumers have been waiting and hoping Sony would drop. However, with recent rumors once again circulating that Sony plans on dropping the price during GDC, this could create quite the surprise bundle to do it with. Sadly, without the price drop, this bundle will probably fall to the wayside as a missed opportunity to capitalize on a ton of potential buyers.

If this SKU is something you're interested in, it's believed to be hitting store shelves come March 29.

I guess playing (and liking) those classics will give them the incentive to buy their sequels

That's your price drop right there.  Sony is doing exactly what they said.  The "added value" model.  Just like the PSP.  The PSP should b $100 by now.  They keep re-releasing and re-releasing, with different games here, maybe a new periferal there.  I can see the next one being a "Home pack" with maybe a headset and Warhawk...or maybe the Sony textpad with the DS3.  They feel like it works for them, and thats all they need to know.

I can't believe no one has figured this out, yet...

This may become a standard bundle and the price will drop on the other bundles to flush reserves and start the first quarter of the new Fiscal Year off with an influx of revenue.  Missed opportunity...  We'll let time be the judge.

The "price drop must come now, or the ps3 is doomed" is starting to get a bit old, imo.

Seems to me the problem some unknown retailers or investors have is that Sony never released a blu-ray and HDD- less sku with a dvd- drive - which apparently would've been able to shift more "total units". And that this would "cascade" the investment in the Playstation "brand".

So while the ps3 unit is actually doing well, and sells a lot of games for the 3rd and first parties - the console shifting business is greener when it comes to MS's model. Really, economics - not worth a lot, imo.

This is a good bundle, had it released a year ago.

You can't tell me Sony couldn't have just put one of those two games' sequels in instead.

@7 No.  At first I thought; "Why not Motorstorm 1 and 2 or Resistance 1 and 2?"  But if they did that, there would be no reason to get the other franchise.  This way, a person may be inspired to get MS2 AND R2.

WOW...that's an awesome deal....not only do you get the 80GB PS3...but you get 2 $30.00 games...that makes the console literally $339....

That's a steal especially considering that I bought both games when they came out (full price $59.99) and the dualshock was extra also....they need to market this like crazy...people need to know that you really are getting a great bang for your buck with this bundle!

hmm maybe that 400 dollar pack with Motorstorm and resistance is the new premium SKU and they will "re-launch" the stand alone 60gb with BC at gdc for 300-350

not a good bundle for me, still waiting, i picked up resistance from the great circuit city sale for $18 and have no desire for another copy and no desire for motostorm, ill play the waiting game on this one, but if it came with a $20 psn card then i might have jumped or something similar.

why do we need a price drop when games like Uncharted 2 and GoW 3 is coming out.. and btw i would like to see a bundle with uncharted and GoW1+2 and maybe GT5 Prol. just to hype up that GoW 3 and Uncharted 2 is coming out soon.. then more ppl would get into the stories of those games and would prolly be much more likely to buy them. most ppl do have GoW1+2 but not everybody..

Yeah but who cares about those games now that their sequels are out? IMO They would have been much better served by just shipping with Resistance 2.

Lefein is right. $399 - $60 for the games = cheaper console. $340 of that goes to the hardware, the majority of the rest goes to Evolution & Insomniac. There is a price drop, but not everyone can see it right away.

    • 3:58pm GMT - March 17th, 2009

I hope you guys don't seriously consider this a price drop, lol. Some consumers don't want to play Resistance OR MotorStorm. Just because you bundle in some low-cost manufactured titles that have already earned 95% of the revenue that they're going to otherwise earn, does not mean you're getting the console at a cheaper rate. The consumer is STILL expected to hand out $399+tax for the console. Bundles aren't going to change their mind if they weren't already prepared to buy it at $399.99 to begin with.

At least It's not $499. Besides they need to strat making more money off the console before they go droping the price. We all know what goes into a real price drop anyway.

they certainly don't use any psychology in their marketing which might just make the sales no different.   If the sales do increase, it probably wont be buy much.  Parents want to see lower numbers rather then 2 older games.  with $30.00 for each game, they might as well just said, ok $300.00  for a Ps3.  people would then be happy or surprised.   2 added games isn't nearly as strong as a visual price drop.

So this is there prices cut, they should done this about at least 8 months ago. But I don't work for them so not my problem. No wonder they said no prices cut. They knew what they want to do, and keep the big surprise for everybody.

    • 6:52pm GMT - March 17th, 2009

if you think about it, bundles usualy sell at a slightly higher price because of the added value. I can honestly see this coming in conjunction with a $50 drop on the stand alone system. After all greatest hits last gen cost @20, it would stand to reason that this gens cost about $25. 2 games together = 50. I dont think anyone should worry about it though one way or another. Could be another hoax.

I'd say take out the built in wifi and charge $100 for wifi adapter like ms is doing with xbox. Also charge a really small fee like xbox live only half the price because its not as robust as xbox live. Then drop the price by $100 and make the ps3 $300 system. Forget about bundling games and bigger hard drives.

Look, I love my ps3 and paid $660 for it when it first came out and I don't regret it because it has so much value but the people left who have not bought it are scared off by the inital higher price compared to xbox and they don't realize that the ps3 comes with so much more and is worth the extra money. We are in a recession and it makes it worse.

If no ones complaining about the xbox not having wifi, not having rechargable batteries built in  for controllers, xbox live yearly fee of $60 then why not try that strategy.

    @30,

Integrating wifi is cheap.  M$ is just greedy; yes, however, Sony could tear out this integration and nickle and dime their console to be cheaper.  If they tear out the wifi, they should tear out the hard-drive - also like the cheaper 360 models.  Certainly that'd warrant a price drop.  with the ability to toss in a laptop HDD whenever you'd please, it kind of makes sense.

I'm kind of glad that the console is still pricey.  It keeps children out of my games.

Upon further thought, this is definitely a hoax..  Why would Sony bundle a Mature game with a standard SKU.  If ever a bundle were to be, it would have something with more "mass appeal."

If I'm wrong, then that takes some serious balls.
