Tomb Raider: Underworld sales are below expectations

Eidos has unveiled its worldwide sales estimations for Tomb Raider: Underworld, noting how the latest entry in the popular adventure franchise has sold below expectations.

The publisher estimates sales of approximately 1.5 million globally following the game’s release in November 2008, attributing the figure primarily due to a “lower start” across the pond.

"On a global basis our sell through to 31st December, which we estimate at approximately 1.5 million units, is below our internal forecasts, primarily due to a lower start in North America," said the company.

"In a difficult North American economy we have seen retailers restricting inventory levels and triple-A products being price discounted above our expectation."

As a result, the publisher expects full year revenue to total around GBP 160 – 180 million, roughly GBP 20 million lower than initially forecast. Despite this, it remains confident that Batman Asylum will stimulate profits upon its release later this year.

I bought it, and then I sold it, I think Laura's had her day, the PS3 has made room for amazing games like Uncharted that did what Laura should have done but always failed to do.

Also it was poorly timed, too late into the PGP (primary gifting period) and it's suffered.

Underworld is an excellent game. Lack of Trophy support needs to be addressed, I agree - but you're a fool if you let that alone stop you buying the game. My only criticism is that it was shorter than I'd hoped.

I felt that this game came in a rough time with many great game. Also from the previews i felt it didnt have anything new to offer and i am just tired of the same barbie look face laura has they could have made it more real looking. I even prefer the girl from drakes fortune and even it wasnt palyable.

Why do Eidos take this as a surprise? Tomb Raider is a gimmick, simple, take a woman game protagonist, put big boobs on her, round behind, make her explore while wearing the most revealing clothes, and of course, make her "fierce". That's it!

But in reality, Tomb Raider sucks big time! Eidos needs to learn this, the hard way!

The game sold poorly in North America not because of the current economic situation but because it is a crap game.  The sooner EIDOS comes to terms with this, the sooner they can move on.

$60 per game.  Lots of good games that came out at that time.  Mixed reviews at early release.  Uh....yeah.  I'm not surprised.  They need to do something new with the Tomb Raider franchise to make it exciting again.  Maybe they should make a Porn Raider instead.  I bet you anything the sales would go through the roof for Eidos!!  LOL.  JK.  But, the new Batman should help their sales.  That game looks badass.

P.S. lordAlucard, you're right.  I would love to see another Legacy of Kain game.

I think this is a reprocussion of making crappy games for the last 3 releases.  I was a hardcore tombraider fan to the point of buying I-IV, and AOD but stopped there.  IV was a dissapointment and that dissapointment continued throughout the next several releases.  You can't release crap over and over and expect high sales on a new release unless you're EA.

It was on my list of games to buy until they did the xbox exclusive DLC.  They should learn not to do that with a multiplatform game, it's their own fault.

@ 25 - my thoughts exactly. I'll pick it up eventually, but not until it's $30 or cheaper.

(and some people wonder why titles sell better on the other box - example given)

With LBP,Far Cry, Resistance 2, NBA 2K9, and Prince of Persia titles being released in October and November Tomb Raider wasn't on everybody's radar as a must buy.

@ #3 I completely agree with you. The developers chose to treat the PS3 version like crap. So personally, I would only get this game on ebay. They chose to release the PS3 version with no trophy support plus no DLC. But they were real quick to sell M.S. exclusive DLC. If youre developing a multi plat game. Then the game should be same on all platforms. No missing features and definetly no exclusive dlc. This is where I start to question developers integrity and credibility. Eidos chose to favor M.S. so I choose to favor ebay and not giving them any of my cash.

what did they expect? how can u make a half-assed game and expect to sell?
i played it on my mates xbox (he didnt buy it either he burnt it) and i was horrified by how bad it was, and considering they also tried copying Uncharted in some forms and FAILED... either kill off the series or sell it to Naughty Dog.

and one would think with the money MS paid eidos for tomb raider dlc exclusive or watever  they be out of debt, wouldve been better if eidos didnt play favoritism.. as easy as it is pirating games on 360. you would think they learn from others mistakes

this game is so UNDERRATED and it is AWESUM!!!!!!!!! so much betta than drake...Sh!t that suks it didnt meet expectation..i hate it wen good games dnt get the recognition they deserve.. these days gamers (apparently) only care about guns, blood and pointless violence..not about beautifully created games like this one..which has amazing voice talent, beautiful vistas, great control and camera, and a well original story... its really a shame
