North American shares of Sony Corporation rose by as much as 5 per cent yesterday on the strength of its victory in the high definition format war, following Toshiba’s shock plans to discontinue support of its HD DVD platform.

The company’s shares recorded a session high of USD 47.07 on the New York Stock Exchange, later easing to USD 46.30, up USD 1.52 (3.4 per cent) from Friday.

Ralph Shackart, an analyst at William Blair, said that the success of Blu-ray is likely to fuel an increased uptake in the number of PlayStation 3 consoles sold, telling Reuters:

"We believe Blu-ray's victory could drive market share gains for the PS3, as we believe consumers will now be more willing to pay up (versus 360) for the standard Blu-ray player.”

The ps3's are going to sell faster than a retard buying a HD-DVD player at half off.

It was only a matter of time.  Are we really that surprised to see BD taking over?  I mean seriously.  The fact that the PS3 was also a BD player was a major selling point in my book.  Now I'm sure many others will agree, and make their next purchase of a console one that is truly worth it's price.

@ Muzikguy ...Damn! you're right Toshiba Corp stock is up. I am no stock exchange expert but something like this should have made toshiba's stock go down faster than a Thai hooker. Something's not right here.....

As we all already know, 2008 has been known as the Year of the PS3 because the PS3's blockbuster exclusives are coming out this year and the PS3 is going to be making a big comeback, but the victory of Blu-Ray was a really big plus for Sony in 2008 and the PS3.

Right now the PS3 has the most momentum and that momentum is definantly going to carry over until Metal Gear Solid 4 no doubt.

Once again this is how I'm starting to see things:

*Home* - Who knows? When it will arrive or if it will be sucessful? *LBP*? Same. *MGS4* - Delayed. *Haze* - Delayed - If it's not a Halo killer or comes close it will be a failure due to the delays. *Killzone 2* - It might look great, but I certainly hated the first one, so why should I look foward to this one? *FFXIII* WHO REALLY KNOWS? *GTP* - I guess people are looking foward to it, but I'm not a racing game fan at all, it's more like a simulation not a game to me. *GTA4* - 360 has more content. So really? How good are things looking? It might have started selling better then the 360 but I'm seeing Too Human, Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 in the future of the 360. Can you guys truly tell me their exclusives can't compete with ours?

Stickemup - Yes We can, Too Human- Equals absolute Sh!t or are you that blind, Fable 2- If by some miracle you actually thought the first one was good then maybe this one could be decent but the first one was terrible and Peter Molunui (or however you spell it) is know to be a liar and always puts out half a**ed games, Alas Gears of War 2 most likely wont come out this year unless you expect them to just cancel UT4 for the 360 and even if it does do you think people are going to say I must get a 360 for Gears of war 2 even though I haven’t played the first one. All the games you listed for the PS3 will sell more systems period, MGS4 will not be Delayed, Haze who cares if it’s a Halo Killer, Halo3 was the last one so there’s no reason to try to compare a game to it, even if it delayed again when it does come out people will buy it me included, FFXII and VS, “who really knows” every one it will sell millions Duh, GT-Pro. will sell millions just like all the ones before it not as many as the Next full GT game but it will sell millions, Killzone 2 will sell because it will be the best looking game in any console when it comes out and that will appeal to people and Even if GTA4 does sell more on the 360 it wont be by much, and because all the other games sold great who cares.

ON TOPIC- Every one knew that the stocks would go up after H-DVD died so its no suprize but very good news none the less.
