Uncharted dev using only "30-40% of PS3's power"

Naughty Dog’s Richard Lemarchand has admitted that the Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune developer is "probably only using 30 or 40% of the power of the PS3 right now."
With the PS3 expected to enjoy a lengthy cycle on the market, there still remains a considerable amount of untapped potential to be discovered by developers; something that Lamarchard believes will be facilitated by the presence of Naughty Dog’s newly developed Edge tool.
"There's a set of tools called Edge that were developed on the Naughty Dog premises, actually, by a group of very, very senior games programmer, some from Naughty Dog and some from elsewhere. I think it's tremendously visionary of Sony to make these tools, which are largely low-level libraries," he told ThreeSpeech.
"That's why we think we're probably only using 30 or 40 per cent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there's this great, untapped potential. All third-party developers can get the Edge libraries for free and are going to be able to use them in their own ways, to get more and more and more out of the PS3 over the years."

Really that's almost a year old story. And now it's popping out everywhere. Last time they said that uncharted uses ~30% of ps3's power.
But it's basically the same thing.
"I guess we're probably going to try to draw...it's more about the quality of pixels in terms of the image, even more than what we've done, because we have been using the...we only used something like 30%, so we can use much more here."

It is an old story, but meh. Anyway, I'm having a blast playing through it again. Not only that, but I have to say that I didn't fully appreciate the graphics when it came out. It was such an early game, I didn't realize hot beautiful it was until I got to compare it to some of the lesser titles of this generation. Uncharted is truly beautiful and where I wasn't sure it I wanted to trophy hunt again, the look sucked me right back in to playing.

i like for the fact they developed there OWN set of tools (edge tool) to equiped them with uncharted using the help of sony's ps3 witch is great cuz with its potential and power, you can creat lots and lots of possibilities.... thats wut i appreciate about noughty dog, insomniac, and guerilla games,is for the fact thru the ps3 they were able to develope their own set of tools to use in creating AMAZING games.
and it only keeps getting better, with more experience of developing for the ps3,means more AWSOME looking games.
Uncharted 2 will be off the chain in Visuals since they only used 30-40% for the first one in Visuals.
Naughty dog FTW!!

Although rather old hat, this news does imply something that there are still two-thirds of the processor waiting to blind us with cris graphics and stunning gameplay.
I eagerly await the arrival of the games that start to use this untapped potential. I'd really like to see a league table of cell usage for all games. As sayeed pointed out, Killzone2 would be an interesting benchmark.

I read somewhere that Killzone 2 is using 80% of the PS3s power. I wonder if its possible to use 100% of the PS3s power :0 That would be amazing

KZ2 uses roughly 4 SPE's in the Cell. That does not, however mean that it's using 2/3 of the PS3's overall potential . We don't know how much of each SPE it's using, and there's most likely not much exploitation going on. (By exploitation, I mean making enemies that are not yet to you have no AI and things of that nature. Same applies for physics, and all sorts of visuals. It's the kind of thing that makes a God of War on the PS2.)

im getting sick of these numbers because im sure its BS. There are difference between using every single power to full extent and using them. UDF was pretty awesome, and i dont mind them saying they could do better, but there is not a program that tells you how much you used. And they used as much as they could. they shouldn't know how much they weren't able to do. They pushed as far as they could, how would they know whats left when they hit the wall? Kojima stated that they did as much as they could, and even though there is still space for more, they used 4 years on it and if they couldn't find more im sure they are at 90% if not more. The last 10% should be sparing some resources and using them differently, i dont believe in their 30-40% BS.
edit: i dont mind them stating something like this to say they can do a lot more, but they are insulting the hard work of other dev teams by saying they could have done at least 2 times better.

Such an incredible game. I'm going to be going back through it soon enough. One of the PS3's best games so far.

It makes sense, why would they want to use full potential in their first game? You need to improve in the sequal to appeal to the customers so they probably planned to not use the most of the potential right away. It is a good idea.

@22 i do not see how them saying they only got 30% out of the ps3 insults anyone else , they are only speaking of their own work.
I believe Kojima said that his team pushed the PS3 as far as they could. Besides if MGS4 is 90% then how do you explain Killzone 2, RE5, and how do you expect them to max out a console so early when the PS2 did not achieve GOW and FF12 visuals so long after developers had already started working on the PS2's hardware.

There is also a difference between using the cell's 100% power ,and using it EFFECTIVELY. Even if Killzone maxed out the SPU's, there is probably still room for more improvement in using that power more efficiently.

by the way just look at some of the psn games and even look at what they do to some of the older games. I got 1942 and I used to pla it all the time when I was little and the add some texture to it and got it running at 1080p and it is very smooth. Even my wife loves to play it.

First, they said that Uncharted was using 10-15% of PS3's power, now there saying 30-40%, I wish they would make up there mind's. Still an awsome game thou, still playing it to this day. @sayeed, KZ2 is using 41/2 SPE's, which is a little over 50% of PS3s power, because developers only have 6 SPEs out of 8, to use for development, which is still double, than what the 360 crapbox has, which is only 3 SPEs. Not old news guys.. this is a recent quote from the Naughty Dog dev on Sony's Edge tools. Believe me this is very important for PS3! For example, if these tools had come out 1 year before the PS3 launch, the war with 360 would be over by now because everything would have come out sooner with better graphics. PS3 need these tools to allow dev's to make better games with less effert and cost. Great to finally hear good news on Edge!

Uncharted is such a great game. IMO the best game to arrive on the console. I do find it funny that dev's come out saying these things, like the sequal is going to be twice as good. As long as it's on the same level as the first they will be just fine, because it was a great game to start with. Regardless of how much cpu power they have to work with, they are still limited by what the gpu can render, even if it's working with the cpu to acomplish that. If only game developers would take such time on PC titles, my old 8800gts's potential would still not be fully realized:) Oh well, thats where consoles have the upper hand. PC is always #1, but you definately have to pay for it, and then keep paying for it lol.

Well personally I don't care how many % it used uncharted was/is an amazing game. And if you look at the first 2 years of the PS2 it was pretty amazing and everyone was in awe with what it could do, then just as everyone thought okay it's reached it potencial, they did GOW2, RE4,Shadow Of colossus,FFXII.... And even now they still push out games that keeps pushing the PS2 to new levels... So the same will go for the PS3 and if you have a look at what it's been capable of in it's first 2 years(well almost) you can just imagine where it will be at close to the end of it's 10year "life cycle"...

yeah but this is good but i didnt like uncharted as much as others cause i felt the game was extremely linear and i hope that they used all that space on gameplay and graphics cause there was not much choice of what to do and i expect to be able to move around more freely in a nex gem game! Uncharted was really good and i do hope these use these tools as many people have complained about the ps3 being complicated and this seems to be a good shortcut!
