Valve: "We're not PS3 developers"

Most of us are more than aware that Valve seems to dislike the PlayStation 3. This has never more evident; they hired someone else to port The Orange Box over to the PS3. As we're sure most of you agree, that was a complete disaster as EA botched the port almost 100%. With Valve's upcoming title, Left 4 Dead, set to release on just the PC and 360, it almost leaves you wondering, "What about the PS3?" According to Valve, if someone is willing to port the game over to the PS3, we could be getting the chance to take a gander at the zombie-shooter.
Lombardi told CVG, "We're not PS3 developers - we're doing PC and 360 like with Orange Box. EA came to us and said 'Wow, Orange box was an incredible project, can we do a PS3 version?'
"If you mention a new Half-Life, people want to make as many versions of it as possible. If Left 4 Dead is big, then we may see a PS3 version later, or if and when we do a sequel, people may be more interested in that. We're only 150 people, so there's only so many things we can do. But it's one of those things with partners, wanting to take on that investment and risk. I think until L4D is proven, you'll probably just see what we make in that franchise."
From these comments you can take away that there is still some possibility that we may get to experience Valve's next shooter; however, we'll have to wait and see at what expense considering their last licensed port offering from EA was less than desirable in terms of quality. If any publishers jump at the chance to have the opportunity to bring it the PS3, we'll keep you guys updated.

Thats an easy way out of a problem!!!
´´Hey, if we cant do it, lets say we dont like to do it!! And then we dont it! - Valve Employe``
Valve should be ashamed for the news above. Geez!!! Al least they could say something like ´´we dont have a large enough team`` or ´´we lack PS3 specialazed personal to do it``.

As much as i dislike Valve... as in burn-the-building-to-the-ground dislike, i still think Left 4 Dead looks cool and will more than likely get it on the 360. I hate Valve with a vengence though, so there is no way on Earth i'd ever make my PS3 sick with garbage like the Orange Box.

What a bunch of lazy morons. Have fun watching your game get pirated to death on PC and 360 while you conveniently ignore the only hack-proof platform.

most developers say that game's are harder to develop on the PS3 and takes a lot of money, but most of them would admitt the PS3 is a massive power house and they would love to develop on it. developer's like INSOMNIAC are going to prove them wrong later this year. so Valve sucks until they give us a great title. I'm gonna stop playing the Orange Box.

although i do hate valva i disagree with u lot about orange box as it wasnt a complete disaster on the ps3 as it was certainly playable with when i played through half and it episode i had no problems whatsover and it was enjoyable. portal was faultless and the legendary team fort2 has a few hitches like once a months worth but it only lasts about a minute before fixing itself so saying it was botched 100% is an overstatement id say about 100x less than that.

They are only 150 people so they can only develop for the pc and 360.how bout we`re only 150 people so we`re booting the 360 and only developing for the pc n ps3, the 360 just doesnt offer as much potential as the ps3...this is what any decent games company telling the truth would of said, just lazy n tight.

how can valve call themselves game developers if they dont give a rats azz about the fans that grew up with half life and counter strike all they care about is the easy way out. try to make a game b4 u give up, just because u have a few A+ games under ur belt doesent mean that u r the best and ppl should kiss ur feet to make a crapy port lik the orange box, if u guys act like that dont even make a port for the ps3 or even games for that matter. U GUYS Lost 1 costumer.

I've read multiple times on different sites that the people in charge at valve strongly dislike the ps3 because it's not made by microsoft.....kinda like konami w/ the ps3 exclusives....but to be honest....these feelings are of course generated by loyalty payments....

Please, people. Valve does not completely suck. While I hate them for not paying attention to the PlayStation 3, their Half-Life series is one of the best action game series ever created. Really. Most games they make get great reviews and are truly fun and playable, and they have really been pioneers in the online gaming community with Steam. Valve might not be PS3 fans, but saying that they can't develop is a lie.

I disagree, Valve's been using the same Source engine and revamped versions of it for years to come. While I can agree that they're not crappy developers, they sure as not as bright as they were after they incorporated physics into the Steam Engine.
I have little respect for Valve considering all they push out is crap for the PS3. Mind you I still like to play Counter-Strike, but that's like over 10 years old! But at least Valve is admitting they suck developing for PS3. -

However they like to charge more for the 360 than the PC version of orange box. Even though I have a 360 and PS3 I have a good PC, thinking of buying Orange Box only $39 on Steam works out about £20 so they get all that money through Steam and 360 Sales surely they should have enough money to make a PS3 development department. I mean for sure Developing on the 360 and PC is all geared around MS but PS3 does have a big market share to, I wouldn't want to shoot my self in the foot like that. Surely it would be far easier to keep your reputation if you had a PS3 Dev Team rather than relying on EA's crappy port work.

I think you got the quote wrong! It should read:
Lombardi told CVG, "We're not capable developers - we're doing PC and 360 like with Orange Box. EA came to us and said 'WTF, you you complete morons? Why can't you muster up enough balls to do a PS3 version?'
And thats how it goes down :D.

In short: Didn't enjoy Half-Life on the PC, never bothered with HL2 on any platform, and am not fussed if Valve develop for PS3 or not. Plenty of other great games out there and coming soon, so no L4D is no great loss, in my personal opinion.

Valve struggle developing for PC TF2 was updated with new achievements but did not remove the developer code that enabled anyone to activate them so its hardly surprising Valve will struggle with PS3 hardware.

Screw Valve and screw their sorry developers. If Valve wants to make average PC games, then let them do it.
I could care less about Left 4 Dead. That game looks like complete crap compared to Resistance 2 and Killzone 2. It's not like just 1 little game title like Left 4 Dead is going to be a difference maker for the PS3.
Us PS3 owners have 3rd party exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy versus XIII, Wardevil and L.A. Noire, so just let Valve continue to make there little DVD games on the PC and Xbox 360 to make a quick buck. It's a shame that they don't realize what they could really achieve in Left 4 Dead if it was developed on the PS3, but it's there loss, not ours.
In my opinion, that statement "We aren't PS3 developers" just mainly meant that they don't have the capacity or knowledge to develop PS3 games and they don't have the money to make PS3 games, but all Valve had to do was just say it.

I think valve is too afraid to get used to a new platform style. it disgusts me to see a company like valve be so chicken about one platform. just about all the other developers took it upon themselves to learn the hardware and software of the PS3 and yeah, it was hard at first. but they all came through and now the PS3 has more higher rated games than the 360. because the quality is more important that shoving 300 games out the door that are low quality.

Shooters are dime a dozen now. Who cares if valve don't want to do a PS3 game. Keep it I'm sure there will be plenty of other shooters available for not only PS3 but 360 as well. I guess the guy is trying to imply that PS3 is not feasible profit wise. Well goodluck when pc gamers hack and burn Left 4 Dead which drives down your precious profits. This is clearly another developer clearly in the pocket of old M$. Many may be too busy for it anyways with GTA4, Haze and Killzone sitting on the shelf. I myself never cared for FPS so valve decision has very little effect on me. I think there's too many for my tastes anyway. Just a reminder to the guy post below easy don't mean better. Update: I went to Wiki for a little research on Valve. Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington the company founders are Long time Microsoft ex-employees. I didn't know that info so at this point guys and girls we should stop posting. Did we really expect ex-Microsoft employees to be gun ho behind PS3? I think no further comment is needed at this point. Especially from me. I actually respect them a little more now. Seriously they aren't PS3 developers :)
