President of Sony Computer Entertainment Kazuo Hirai has confirmed that the platform holder will be debuting its PlayStation Network movie download service in North America this summer.
Speaking at the company’s mid-term strategy meeting, Hirai stated the firm would be rolling out the service initially to US territories, with Japan and Europe receiving the feature at a later date.
Full details have yet to be revealed, although more information is expected to arrive some time next month.
Elsewhere, the company also revealed that over 9.8 million PSN accounts have been registered globally, with users accumulating in the region of 170 million downloads, equating to roughly 86 peta bytes of data.
“In the game segment, the two key drivers of new growth are non-game content and services in tandem with enhanced network capability,” stated the firm.
“Sony also expects to achieve profitability in this segment in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, a significant year-on-year improvement due to hardware cost reductions and an enhanced line-up of software titles for PlayStation 3."
Stay tuned.

Sounds interesting indeed.. Why can't ot be a global release? Or let Europe get it first, after-all, we are Sony's main territory now, and yet.. We still get shafted almost every week, I wish Sony would wake up and realise their consumers, who bought their console at a ridiculous price have been loyal to them, and yet.. WE STILL GET SHAFTED! Sony are begining to p!ss me off, they better deliver something, I'm becoming in-patient..

Is it not summer, already? Or is this one of those BS announcements that'll take a year to put into practice? Either way it'll be interesting to see what titles will be made availabe. I'm guessing it'll be nothing thats been released on DVD or BD in the past 12 months. Also how will this work? Will it be Peer-to-peer? Will you be able to pause a download so you can give your system a "rest" or play online at the same time?

I dont think the president of the u.s. has anything to do with sony's movie download service. Sony is competing with microsoft basically only in the u.s. , so it makes sense....plus, we make all the movies you dorks! lol Also, I dont think this will affect region coding at all for psn, but maybe for the movies...

Ahh. So this is what they've been doing instead of in-game XMB. Well, it's a good move, so I guess it's worth it.

You're so right odium.... I was under the mistaken impression that a company can have different teams working on seperate tasks that they are best suited at. Silly me. I Forgot sony devs can do only one thing at a time.

Is everything in Europe so linear? For a second, imagine a service coming out in a territory and only needing support for ONE language. Then think about a lackluster SCEE already failing to deliver PSN goods. And it would be an insane idea to think that the major competition between online services is in the US.
Silly Sony, if you want to attack Xbox Live, go to territories that have low amounts of 360s first. And go to Europe first because they don't already have a DVR service for the PS3.

Well, Summer almost here (right now, it's still officially Spring), and we are about to get XMB and this IPTV thing. So there were two teams. I was being sarcastic in my post, what were you doing in yours?
