'We can compete against GTA IV' says Saints Row 2 dev

With the inexorable hype train that is Grand Theft Auto IV, many people are forgetting the fact that later this year, possibly in the fall, Saints Row 2 will be released. What people also forget is that the original Saints Row was innovative in its own right, allowing the player to create his or her own character and introducing a steady multiplayer mode.

This is why Greg Donovan, the Producer of Saints Row 2, believes that despite heavy attention on Rockstar’s upcoming crime romp, Saints Row 2 will still prove itself a worthy contender in the face of GTA IV, and indeed any future instalments in the series.

”The only thing I know about GTA is what I've read. From what I've read it seems like they're going in a more realistic direction,” said Donovan.

“For us it's more about almost a hyper-realistic quality, over-the-top, all about these memorable moments, very compelling gameplay and frankly we wouldn't be releasing this year if we didn't think it would be competitive.”

"I think co-op is a huge distinguishing factor. Unless they are really holding something, I don't think they are. I think that's a big step, a plus for us. We also remember that Saints Row 1 was the first one to do competitive multi play - we're going to continue to blow that out as well."

Saints Row 2 will be released later this year, while Grand Theft Auto IV is scheduled to appear next month. Whether this will affect the impact of Saints Row 2 remains to be seen.

I think saints row franchise is buggy and i think that they can compete with gta franchise its just that the gta franchise will always be the favorite and saints row is just something new and not stickin sorta like how spilnter cell franchise is compared to metal gear solid franchise.

The sorta 1 game is the original to the saga and others copy off of it to try to improve which it does but not in a good way more like a try too hard way.

I dont think the developers of SR2 are able to capture the whole experience as well as Rockstar do with the GTAs. They usually have the perfect blend of funnyness...(whether it be with the various radio stations or the dialogue in some missions), Action, Gore(although nothin really over the top like manhunt.lol.) There is just something special about the whole GTA experience and i have nothing but the highest expectations for the game and thats where i think SR2 will fall short.

What crap you lot talk. "They can't come close".

Why not? Are Rockstar god-like programmers?

Who is to say that Saints Row aren't pumping in the same amount of development. The first game sold well (and was easily comparable to GTA3). I know for a fact that they've been on a considerable recruitment drive over the last year so they're obviously thinking big.

Who is to say they can't better it.

Everyone though Tony Hawks was the best skating game around til Skate came along and trounced it from nowhere.

You can't sit still or you'll sink! And it's pleasing to see that Rockstar don't seem to be. It's the amount of subtle new things they throw into each GTA that gives it an extended apeal I feel.

And yes it is a competition. Everyone wants to make the most popular game. If not, then why are you in the business. It's not nerds in the basement anymore. This is Holywood size development with the sole incentive (for the Companies at least) of making money.

tony hawk is a terrible example.. mainly because it was the oly thing out as far as skating went and despite that some people felt that it was becoming the same thing over and over..sure it was the best skating game out but at the time it was the only and skate came and kicked it butt...

Now saints row on the other hand..even being on a next gen platform at the time, did nothing compared to SA.. that right there eliminates the skate comparison because skate came out and took that crown right away..

Now as for Sr2 and Gta4 if the hype of  gta4 is well deserved i doubt sr will be able to hold it own against it.. good to see competition but its got to change the way we play sandbox games if it wants the crown....kind of like what skate did

Wintee, you said that SR1 was comparable to GTA3? You dont know you just insulted that game. GTA3 was the first GTA on the ps2 and the first one to go 3D.Do you know how much better San Andreas was than GTA3? Actually SR1 dont stand up to part 3 simply because of GTA3 wow factor it was nothing like it out at the time.SR is a carbon and inferior copy.

    Nice point wintee

But the thing gta iv will have saints row 2 will not have gta will have newer features that once again saints row 2 will copy what new stuff rockstar implements in their original free roaming franchise.

They sure can compete against GTA, another different subject is how they will do. In my opinion, they should not be running against GTA or they will be crushed...badly. GTA is a blockbuster and will sell like hot cakes.

Haha. Saints Row. Blah. Maybe Mafia 2, L.A. Noir or 2 Days 2 Vegas. But not Saint's Row.

San Andreas had a limited co-op mode and the PSP versions has several Multiplayer modes. So it's not like it can't be done in GTA they just never bothered to do it on PS2 properly.  He's really just talking up his product trying to put as confident a face on it as he can. I dont think SR2 will be bad by any means, I'd like to play it for sure, I like customization, but I've had GTA4 preordered since it's announcement and I'm not even the bigest fan of the game by far, you dont just beat that kinda of loyalty with big words.

IMO, SR2 already lost. You can't better the originator, at least in this case.
