Yellow Dog 6.0 goes public

Upgrades abound as Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 is released to the public, complete with updated PlayStation 3 compatibility.

Terra Soft, purveyors of Open Sauce operating systems, has finally allowed it's recent distribution of Yellow Dog to be downloaded free by the public. While it has been out for roughly a month, one had to be a member or buy a CD of it. The latter probably confuses many Linux owners (Linux is generally free), so the public release will be well received.

So what's new? Well here's a handy list to explain all.

-E17 & Gnome installed by default, KDE included.
-Gnash, the Flash work-alike.
-Ekiga VoIP, Pidgin IM/IRC, and Fluendo codec installer.
-Kernel v2.6.23, gcc v4.1.1, gblic v2.5, and Eclipse v3.2.2
-The only Linux distribution to include by default Cell SDK v3.0.
-IBM iRT (interactive raytrace) demo available via YDL.net Enhanced

If there are parts of this list you do not understand, chances are it won't affect you. Main things though are; Choice between Mac like interface (GNOME) and Windows like interface (KDE), Flash stuff now works, New Skype and AIM/Windows Live Messenger capabilities now included, and a fancy demo to show off raytracing, the next step in photo realism.

The page with download links is here, which point to where the DVD images can be found. The ISO is about 3.7 GBs though, so you may want to find a cure for cancer while it downloads.

Word of warning: if you're planning on installing Linux on your PS3, and have no prior experience, check out a few FAQs before you dive in. It may just save you buying a new one.

Stay tuned.

@Deusthousand: It will work like a PC. If you need it, it's good, if you don't need it, then don't bother:)

It's fun to try different OS's and see what unique, superior features they provide. Also I'm not sure there's anything you can do with an OS install on PS3 that would brick it. To start up to the game OS (the XMB) you just hold down the standby button as you would to startup in automatic setup mode.

I've installed Yellow Dog Linux on my PS3, but frankly I haven't found any use for it at all so far. Any PC features I might want to perform, I can do more easily on my laptop. Still, its interesting to see what other things you can do with you PS3.

Linux on a PS3 is the cheapest way in which you can have access to programming on Cell BE architecture. Otherwise you would have to buy a Blade server from IBM, which I'm sure is not a cheap thing. If you are not a programmer, there's no point on installing Linux for you, otherwise you might be as happy as me to be able to install and test the latest Cell BE SDK which is the 3.0 version. Thanks PSU for reminding me! Downloading it already.

What is the difference between the different forms of Linux.... like,Yellow Dog and Unbuntu for example?  Is there different functionality? Does one work better on the PS3?  etc....

For everyone thinking Linux on PS3 is useless, it's not true at all.  Ripping Blu-rays to play on a Windows box is quite easy.  Backing up your $29.99 investment is amazing.  Using Blockbuster/Netflix to rip and return is also possible but that would be a horrible unethical thing to do..............................

Although using my PS3 as a computer might come in handy,  I think I'll just keep using it for a gaming console.  Even though it has the ability to surf the web or what have you,  the view on my tv is only about a quarter the size of the actual websites page.  It is very frusterating to have to scroll left to right and back again just so I can read the words or see the pictures.

It will open the door for viruses on your PS3, but I do see some programers finding cool uses for it soon. Added functionality to PS3 "if you want it" is always nice.

Instant messaging does work, as MSN and such. I think there is a new program now, but before it was named GAIM. For help on getting the wireless working, just search the YDL forums, but i think wifi works out of the box with YDL6, you just have to activate it!
