Speaking at its second quarter financial results last night, Take-Two revealed that the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto IV has sold 8.5 million copies to date out of the 11 million units shipped to retail.
The company also revealed that BioShock, which is headed to the PS3 later this year, has sold a total of 2.2 million copies to date.
Take-Two Chairman, Strauss Zelnick, commented, “Take-Two’s performance has exceeded expectations through the first half of fiscal 2008, clearly demonstrating the creative, operational and financial strength of our business.”
“Our results reflected the extraordinary success of Grand Theft Auto IV, the value of our catalog of titles, and our ongoing initiatives to improve the efficiency of our operations. We look forward to continuing to enhance stockholder value by building on our broad portfolio of internally developed and owned interactive entertainment brands, leveraging the opportunities in the current industry cycle, and operating our business in an effective manner.”
Grand Theft Auto IV has proven to be a runaway hit on both sides of the Atlantic, receiving unanimous praise from both critics and gamers alike, becoming the biggest selling entertainment launch in history.
The game rocketed to the top of the charts across the globe, and has yet to be knocked of its pedestal in the UK, where it has held the top spot since its release on April 29.

Or in another way to put it hesmanes is that the DLC might be substantial. Which would be a cause for envy.

Over 8million copies in just five weeks, that's truely amazing if if it'strue that it's multi platform (I guess EA can stop dreaming about buying out Take Two, lol), now we have to wait and see how well mgs4 sells!

Thats good but I can't play GTA4 anymore as it crashes every 5 minutes. No one has come up with a solution yet :-(. I've tried everything. I've got a 60GB PS3 and the patch that Rockstar sent out and the firmware 2.35 will not fix the issue. I'm so dissappointed I'm not playing this game...

I was disappointed in this game. The graphics are crap, the radio stations are HORRIBLE (3 rap ones? come on!!!), and the controls are terrible. I still have to beat the game, but I might wait a year like I did with San Andreas. Because of GTASA and now GTAIV, I don't think I'll be buying any more GTA games.

@ gabriel1985: What an intelligent and well thought out comment. I wish everyone here would put the same effort into their posts. Thank you for showing us how its done.

Nice number but I'm still going to wait on it. It seems like a great game but I was getting used to flying a jet to get anywhere.

Yeah, I don't think this game was that great either. I'm not surpised it sold so well with all the hype. I bought it on launch day, but was bored after two weeks. San Andreas really was a better game. It's kinda sad really, it seems like expectations for video games has gone downhill.

This game didn't appeal to me as I thought it would be. I still can't believe this game got perfect scores from the reviewers. There were just going with the hype this game had...sadly. From this I learned not to judge the game by what the reviewers say. I will judge a game now by playing it and coming up with my own conclusions
