Sales of the 80GB PlayStation 3 model have increased by as much as 5,685 per cent following yesterday’s pre-sale at online retailer Amazon.com.
The new SKU, which is scheduled to go on sale from August 12th, contains a 80GB hard drive plus a copy of Evolution Studios’ MotorStorm and will retail for USD 599.99.
As previously reported, Sony is currently selling the original 60GB SKU for the reduced price of USD 499; however, the model is to be discontinued after stock at retail is sold out. In related news, the 60GB PS3 is also currently ranked as Amazon’s top selling product in the retailers Computer & Videogames division.
Sony has so far sold a total of 1.4 million PlayStation 3 units across North America, and is currently forecasting a further 11 million shipments for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Well, i seen people upgraded their ps3 system to 355, that 80 is nothing really and it doesnt make any difference in my opinion. Sony should sell a separate hard drive so, people can buy it and increase thier hard drive thats for ps3 system. Sony is mindless with these stuff thats why they are losing money.

^ There would be no cause for Sony to sell a seperate hard drive, the reasoning behind putting a standard 2.5" hard drive in there is that people could just buy a regular laptop hard drive off the shelf at their own discretion and install it at home, like it says to in the instruction manual. Right now you could walk into a shop and buy a 160GB hard drive for your PS3 for a fairly reasonable cost without having to splash out for a newer SKU.
Production costs on a 80GB hard drive now, compared to a 60GB hard drive four months ago would be roughly the same, so there's no reason not to add that extra 20GB.
If they're so mindless, then why did their sales just jump by 5,685% overnight?

if sony was to make there internal hard drive and sell it... that would make them just like M$. tha not good, i respect sony talent making skillz, as soon as you think that they are crazy BAM!!! sales increes :) they still have not let me down, so no reason to say they should do something else. with to winning game platform, there is no reason for sony to change the formula that works for them :) woot! go sony.

So, is it 5,685 or 5.685? Most likely it's the latter as 5685 seems impossible, but still 5.685% is good.

no its 5,685%, the reason y its so high is because pre order's r just being taking it, if sales were 5.685, they wouldnt post it duh, but good job people for buying ps3's, sony u know what u need to do, bring on the 400$ 40gb model

Wee.. (no, not Wii!!) almost 6 percent.... that is either 1 more or a billion more, i'll guess about... not so much. How come this be something to make an article about, you should insted just make an article showing the differences between the sales on all consoles! Including the differences on the SKU's.

It has not been 1.4 million since the price drop, they mean since the release. And 5,685% is possible. If they only sold 1 80GB PS3 yesterday and 2 today that means that sales doubled. meaning sales increased by 100%. 5,685% is very reasonable when you think of how percentages actually work. Percentages are hard to increase when dealing with the PS3 sales overall, but with sales of the 80GB sku which just started it's very easy to increase sales by that size.

I might have considered this but an extra 20GBs isn't worth selling and buying again. I'll probably just throw in a 200GB when the warranty expires.

It's a huge jump for Sony. Uh Oh! Sony is creepin on a come up. I bet MS is feeling the heat. Sony has already exceded 6 million in sales, across the globe, and it's only been 81/2 months, OUCH!! Sony's catching up, there already half way caught up with MS. It just shows what happens when you challenge a PROFESSIONAL console maker, who's main concern is, to sell the consumer a quality product, you know, who cares about the gamers. SONY WILL TAKE THROAN AGAIN!!
