PVR planned and ready for early 2008

The new HD PVR accessory for the PS3, announced at Leipzig, looks ready to arrive to retailers in the beginning of 2008.

SCEE head David Reeves described the difficulties of bringing the PVR system to PS3. "The PVR - it looks simple, but within it there's a lot of licences that you have to obtain. Sometimes you're just not sure if you're going to get that licence ... you know what Europe is like - we have to get safety compliance on a thing like a black box from, I don't know, fifteen or sixteen independent bodies."

Started off as a mere idea, PVR grew into something big. Regardless, there were licensing bumps along the way that made PVR almost seem not possible on the PS3. Luckily for Europe, Sony stood strong and paid off the independent bodies for the good of the consumer's entertainment investment. With that, PVR is ready to hit the streets January or February of 2008.

PS3 is becoming more and more of a entertainment hub, what a great idea and it makes the decision for a HDD in every system more justified

PVR - Personal Video Recorder...it's pretty much Sky+ on your PS3.  A 60GB HDD thats empty will net you about 30 hours TV at SD and 15 hours at HD...the new Sky+ boxes and HD boxes come with a built in 80GB HDD to the get 40/20 hours at SD/HD.

When it comes down to it, a lot of people don't want Sky or Cable but they want the functionality of the Sky+ and therefore they opt for a PVR, Sony putting one out for PS3 means that they really are trying to push the PS3 as an entertainment hub rather than a games console with some flashy extra features.  Guess we'll see how this turns out soon enough...

Good thing, but isn't the actual weakest point of the PS3.. the lack of AAA and exclusive GAMES ??!!

Oh come on guys. Just because Sony is making all these extras for the PS3 doesn't mean they're not concentrating on games as well. It's not like their home electronics department (tvs, stereos) were making games in the PS1,2 days. I'm sure they have as many people working on games if not more than they did back then. I wonder what the price will be for this.
