According to GamesIndustry.biz, the introduction of the new 40GB PlayStation 3 and the price drop on the 60GB bundle has increased sales by 178% in the UK.

Currently the PS3 is standing at #3, just behind the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. With Sony now offering a cheaper 40GB PlayStation 3 for GBP 299, consumers with shallow pockets are now picking up the system.

However, this that is not the only move the company has made. As previously reported, Sony has also dropped the price on the 60GB model to GBP 349 and bundled 2 free first party games with the console.

Will Sony have the same success when they bring these deals to the U.S.? Only time will tell.

Right in your Face to all of you who doubted the success of the 40-gig model, weeping out loud just cuz BC is allegedly soooo important - well obviously NOT

I for one wouldnt have bought the system if it didnt have BC as on my PS3 since march I have played about 90% PS1/PS2 games, and 10% PS3 games. This will at somepoint change, but I always want to be able to play my old games.  However I still believe this is a good move as alot of people would simply prefer to keep their PS2 and save the money, while others have no interest in old games at all. This now gives people the option.

not surprising. expect the same results elsewhere when those deals become available. especially with R&CFTOD, Uncharted:DT and Haze weeks away. FINALLY we get some games.

Here's hoping this is more of a trend through X-mas instead of just a spike!

HA!  178% increase from what?  Compare weekly UK sales to weekly US sales, and you'll see that this is hardly a "PS3 surge."

you cant compare uk sales to us sales because there are 300 mil people here and only 60 mil there. thats a HUGE difference in consumers. cmon dude.

Really hope this really does cross over to the states, thats nealy a 200% increase!! :) However they are making great strides to compete with Nintendo's Wii and DS so competition just got really heated in the UK.

I truely believe that the 2nd weeks sales will be even bigger and just wait to you see October figures and then November. What days are this sales spike counting for? Gameindustry.biz says last week sales sees a 178% surge, so is the sale from Wednesday to Sunday not counting Monday? Its obvious its not 1 full week of sales. Also I'm thinking that not many would initially know of the price-drop on Wednesday and then the word gets around and people see it listed at a later date so this means sales will continue to increase very much like the PSP slim in Japan. The first week of sales was 100k withe the Crises Core bundle, at that point I thought the sales spike was due to this bundle and the following week sales would decrease slightly. But the next week the sales nearly trippled selling 280k, it just took a little while for people in Japan to acknowledge the new system.

Ok, so how many people here rushed out and bought the 40 GB version? I wouldn't be surprised if the increase is soley due to people ensuring they get one with backwards compatability while they still can. Unfortunately here in Australia we weren't given that option - they let the supply run dry before they even announced the 40 Gb SKU.
