PS3 development makes for better 360 game?

For the longest time, many developers would have the general gaming body believe that developing on the PlayStation 3 is like crawling through broken glass naked. This has been met with many developers, taking their once PS3 exclusive titles, and converting the over to the Xbox 360 as a multi-platform experience, such as Assassins Creed. Some developers believes the opposite, even going as far as saying that by having a game developed with the PS3 being the lead, the Xbox 360 version would be a better game than it would have if the 360 were the lead.

Nick Channon, Senior Producer for Burnout Paradise explains how setting the PlayStation 3 as the lead platform over the Xbox 360, actually makes the Xbox 360 version a better game.

"From our point of view, we’ve had no issues with dealing with either machine; that’s what I mean by that. It seems that some games haven’t always transitioned between the two well. From our perspective leading on Playstation3 has meant Xbox 360 has given us a great product."

Given the fact that tech wise, the PlayStation 3 is the more powerful console. So if a game is made with the PS3 in mind, this will push the Xbox 360 version of that same game to its heights. This leads to questions such as how would Gears of War turned out if it were developed as a PS3 game rather than a Xbox 360 exclusive title? Well it is already said that Unreal Tournament III will be visually better than Gears of War, and the PS3 is the lead on that project, so you do the math.

i believe that it depends on the devs,  Assassins Creed looks better on 360 so does Pro Street... i thought it was because 360 was the lead on the product.

but then look again at COD4 this game was developed indevidually on each console and it looks and plays better on the ps3.     and thats why this leads me to believe that it depends on how devs develope games.

'' cool i guess 2nd''   i bet the first poster didnt even read the article, those noobs and there 1st post coment just make me lol.

I actually don't buy a game if there is anything wrong with the PS3 version. There is no excuse for the PS3 version not being BETTER than the 360 version, with the PS3's far superior hardware. So if the developers are going to be lazy, I definitely will not support them. But o FCK I love COD4, I'm SO glad those developers went all out on the PS3 version.

It makes sense. Developing on PS3 first will cause developers to push the 360 farther. But if they push the 360 too much won't the piece of junk overheat quicker and more often, because that sucker already overheats as it is.

well if Mark Rein is so happy with the PS3, why doesnt he bring Gears of War 2 to PS3. I would like that alot.  I dont mean bring it to ps3 exclusive just make it multiplatform, Microsfot doesnt own the rights to publish the second one. So why not make more money on all us Sony fans EPIC?

This is old news once more posted on various gaming websites yesterday but never the less i'm glad there posting it, i'm lucky because i have all three consoles so if the game has turned out badly on ps3 i will purchase it on xb360 but ps3 is first option, it's all about timing really has now alot of good developers are utilising the ps3 with very good results and from now on you will see more and more developers utilising the ps3 hardware i mean it's the same with any new hardware.

@ Lp47 ... If UT3 sells really well, which it will if Sony would get off their ''''ing a55es and market the damn game, then we might have Gears of War 2 on our PS3's. Heres a HUGE what if.... Say Epic and Microsoft can't reach an agreement on the user created content aspect of UT3. Epic wants to deliver it free and Microsoft says no. Would Epic scrap the 360 version. Mark Rein himself said in an interview with 'gamasutra' he was going to sit down with Microsoft to figure it all out before they even start developing the x360 version. What do you think would happen with Gears of War 2 if the x360 UT3 gets scrapped? We all know the word "free" doesn't exist in the Microsoft dictionary so...... Something to think about there..... maybe

"IF" put their best devs on the PS3 CoD so if they then went and worked on the 360 version, I see where the 2nd commet poster gets that from.

    @Tom and Lp47PS3:

The Gears of War name is published by Microsoft. And, I believe, the IP itself is owned by Microsoft. So that makes the possibility of having Gears of War on PS3 about as likely as, say God of War being on Xbox 360. However, if the Gears of War name isn't owned by Microsoft, then Epic can certainly find another publisher and, well, possibly release it on both.

But like Crytek, the patriarch of Far Cry and Crysis, it's unlikely. When Crytek went to Ubisoft to publish their next game, they couldn't name it Far Cry 2. EA owns that franchise. Similarly, if Crytek were to go to a different publisher for their next game, it wouldn't be Crysis 2* and it wouldn't be Far Cry 3**.

*Unless they didn't give Ubisoft sole ownership of the IP, which is unlikely; Publishers want ownership of the property if they're going to publish it.

**Unless that other publisher they went to was EA.

wow so let me translate for all those companys out there complaining about game designing for the ps3. I think what they mean to say is that they are very lazy because of the extra time needed to fill 50 gigs of space to make the ps3 games look top notch. Amazing that u dont here this from gurilla corp aka KILLZONE 2 producer and development. then again they are takeing there time makeing sure a great game can become everything that it hyped up to be. great games take time. now either sit down and do your job or mabe u would like to be sent to other amazing systems like vtech for kids. hey valve make orange box a 16 mb game losers.

@ Mephistosoze ... http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=75806 ... MS doesn't own GoW. Its already been pretty much proven. GoW2 might be on PS3. Most likely as a multi plat title but still.

The simple thing is coding for ps3,is basically universal,it is tough but you really good results with it.Since ps3 has more power than 360(we all know it's true),if you build a game from ground up on the ps3,it reaches far greater quality than if built for 360 as lead, this has been proven with CoD4.Thy had simultanous development, and the ps3 version was still better. Also some dev said it was easier this way because if it's 360 to ps3 they basically have to break the code into smaller pieces. So it causes tremendous quality loss,AND it costs more.Whereas ps3 to 360 is putting the pieces into one big chunk, since ps3's cell has one PPE and six SPEs(eight actually but,one is reserved for OS,the other for performance purposes). And the 360 has only 3 PPEs so building a game on the 360 can be easier, but the results are limited, whereas developing for ps3 is harder but it yields much greater results. That is why they say hard work pays($60 for each copy actually).
