Bizarre responds to The Club criticism

Developer Bizarre Creations has responded to mixed reaction surrounding the company’s forthcoming shooter, The Club, suggesting that many users have simply misunderstood the game’s concept.

Community Chief Ben Ward told Videogaming247 that he expects the title’s core emphasis on racking up high scores to "take time to resonate with certain people".

"For every person who played it and was expecting a story-driven game we found two or three people who really understood the pursuit of high-scores," explained Ward. "Already we've got a hardcore fan base building up, which is very encouraging!"

"The game is all about competing with friends for the highest score possible, and showing off your skills whilst doing it. It's something that's fairly unique in the shooter genre at the moment, and something we really believe in."

Ward also shed light on the company’s decision to tone down the amount of blood and gore in the game, in order to maintain focus on the game’s skilled-based combat, as well as avoiding unwanted attention from anti-videogame enthusiasts.

“Fundamentally the game is still about shooting lots of people”, he continued.

“We've handled this in a similar way to Hollywood action movies - it's not gratuitous or sadistic in the way it does things. Primarily the game is a gameplay-driven skill-based title, and we are hoping that anti-videogame groups will see this shine through."

The Club hits European shelves today for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with a North American release following on February 19.

Played the demo, Not my cup of tea, But I can see the thinking behind the whole thing and it is quite a good idea, Back to the roots of actualy trying to get the high score, Pure and simple. So we (eu) actualy get a game before the Yanks this time, Shame it wasnt a better game that I might have actualy brought !! Oh well.

Not interested!!why running around n shooting other people in limited time just to get highest score ?it would have been better with good, deep story base missions for each characters !

As ive said before its just state of emergency without the shooting of innocent people, i understand the concept, its been tried before and although state of emergency was good for what 5 minutes it just gets tedious. This just doesnt have what it takes to sit in my exclusive ps3 games pile !

I really enjoyed the demo, especially the multiplayer aspect. Its a welcome change to games that are currently in development which are heavily taking gameplay elements from eachother, atleast this attempts to break away from those gameplay cliches. The mutliplayer in the demo was genius in my opinion which I played against my friends for a heluva long time. I would buy the game if there werent so many games to get on my "to get list". So huge credit to the developers for taking the risk and breaking away from the standard shooter mechanics.

I love how people are not liking the concept of die, run, shoot, die, respawn, die, shoot, shoot..... and people complaining about story, when you guys go crazy for every silly FPS that has online mode hi2u resistance, hi2u CoD4. That is exactly what online mode is, you have a time limit/score limit, and the person with the high score wins.
Now the 2 I mention also have a story mode, but that isnt why you guys bought those games, so am confused lol

As you can tell I am not the biggest (read: Not) fan of FPS, but is just amusing to see your point of view on this game.

it's not so much that i don't get it, i'm all for high score games but the control system is terrible, the graphics are average, the concept is nothing new (been in loads of films) and the lack of a story puts me off...i enjoy getting engrossed in a story behind a game.
