Sony has confirmed that it will be putting PlayStation Home under the knife for scheduled maintenance today, with the online social platform heading offline for six hours while it upgrades to v1.04.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the primary reason for the downtime is to offer a remedy for users experiencing trouble accessing Home due to high demand for the service.
The post goes on to state that Home’s voice chat functionality will also be disabled temporarily as part of its transition from v1.03 – v1.04, though will be implemented at a later date. In its absence, Sony suggests make use of the PS3’s swanky new wireless keypad.
Stay tuned.

Sony really needs to dedicate towards having more voice communication on the PS3. I have a headset. Any gamer without a headset is a noob, or a mute. I think they should have something similar to TeamSpeak where you can connect to your friends and you could all be playing different games, but still talking to each other. Or you can at least call up a friend like you can in Home, but in any game you're playing. Make it built into the PS3 software and not one of those thigns where game companies have to update. It would make things so much easier to communicate with people than stopping what you're doing in a game and typing out a message on the virtual keyboard, WHICH IS A ROYAL PAIN IN THE REAR!!! Worst of all, it often gets you killed, which really sucks!

@2,
The PS3 has all of these things in video and voice chat. Why would you want to talk to a friend while playing a game who is playing another game anyway? That's what cellphones are for and that's one of the biggest reasons I hated my 360. Don't you realize how annoying it'd be to play CoD4, only to get your gameplay interrupted by the random bantering of your friends? I applaud Sony for keeping voice communications simplistic and effective. It only works where it can be utilized and isn't forced upon anyone. Besides, you can still bark orders at people who do not have bluetooth headsets just fine.
Personally, I wish less people had headsets. There are lots of people out there with crappy mics and equally crappy voices.

@3
Yeah, theres definately some people that just shouldn't have headsets. However, I hardly ever hear anyone talk on any PS3 game I'm playing. I like the new update that 360 has where you can create a "party" with up to 8 of your friends, and then join a game and your only speaking with the people in your party and it mutes out all the annoying people you don't care to talk to. I believe this is far more useful than anything home offers, and the PS3 is lacking big time in this department. If you didn't want to be bothered by friends while playing your 360, you could just change your status to offline or away, and friends can't contact you while your playing. Sony needs to implement this soon, as It's an important feature to alot of people would use.

@Jimimick: Do you remember when you first used a keyboard? You'll learn how to use it like you do with the computer keyboard, I can write whole pages without looking down on the keyboard one time.
And I agree that Sony should add a feature that allows people to speak the whole time while being online nomatter if you play or if you do anything else.

So, let me get this straight. Home is going offline for 6 hours today for an "upgrade". When Home is back online, it will have less features than it did before the "upgrade".

In response to post #3: there are endless reasons why you might want to talk to a friend (or friends) who is playing another game. I wind up doing it almost every single time I get on my 360.
I'm a big Resistance fan, and me and my bros are digging the heck out of playing R2 these days, but the contrast between XBL and PSN with regard to quick, convenient communication is pretty obvious to every single dual-console owner I play with. Getting an R2 team put together vs. getting a team together for a game on XBL can often be a pain in the neck by comparison, mainly because we have no way of communicating with each other if we're not in the same lobby other than banging out umpteen texts. It's tedious. I don't think it's the least bit unreasonable to hope for improvement from Sony on this front.
And, also- this comment about "that's what cell phones are for" is one I've seen before, and it's really a kick in the pants. Voice communication for online gaming IS NOT what cell phones are for- that's what online gaming network services like PSN and XBL are supposed to be for. I'm not a big fan of the idea that I should have to use a telephone to make up for what I'm not getting out of my online gaming service.
