Pachter predicts PS3 price drop

Despite strong sales throughout 2008, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has said that he expects Sony to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 down to USD 299 some time in April of this year.

Of course, both consumers and analysts alike had expected a price drop to emerge in time for the 2008 holiday season, but this never came into fruition. Recently, Sony reiterated that they plan to turn a profit with their console and deny any price drop sometime soon. However, keep in mind that Pachter has something of mixed track record in regards to this industry predictions.

"Once the PS3 is at a more affordable price point (we expect a cut to $299 in April), we think that sales of that device will once again begin to grow," states Pachter. "We expect another cut in price for the Xbox 360, with the feature-laden Pro model likely to come down in price to $249 at or before this year's E3 show in June."

Though it is unusual for Pachter to be correct, we're hoping this ends up being true for those still waiting for the right time to jump into next generation gaming. With titles like Resident Evil 5 and Killzone 2 coming out within the early parts of this year, it's as good a time as any to join the rest of your friends in the world of HD gaming bliss.

A price drop would be nice but I don't see Sony lowering the price because they said they are trying to break even this year....unless the price drop will make them even. The economy is pretty bad right now and I have a few friends who want PS3's but are waiting for a price drop. Only Sony really knows if they will drop the price or not but until then they will do the usual and deny it.

This would be nice,  but I fully intend to purchase one next month when my tax money comes in.  I don't care if I have to pay $399 or $299.  $299 would be great,  but it wouldn't bother me if the price drop came now or later.  There will be a permanent PS3 in my living room next month either way.

What is it with psu.com posting somebody's comments every time they mention a price drop, this isn't news, whenever somebody down at Sony says it, that's another story.

psn id: gingo.. a price drop is definitely whats needed for the ps3 becasue consumers dont look at what their getting for the money they look at the original price and go for the cheapest

what a nonce pachter is ... world is economic freefall and this is the best he can come up with.

What he is ignorant of is the fact that despite Sony reporting a first half operating loss of $1 billion, our friends from the land of the rising sun are still good for stocks as they  are one of the few companies who have been trading strongly.  PS3 doesn't need a price drop, Vaio does, maybe bravia but PS3 will keep cruising.  Sony is particularly vulnerable to the strong yen, as about 80% of its sales come from overseas and with the rest of the world sleeping, they will use the time to cut back exports and stockpile supplies.  It's more than a case of dropping the price for a couple of whingers.
