Quantic Dream’s David Cage has poured cold water on any hopes of seeing a sequel to its PlayStation 3-exclusive outing, Heavy Rain.
Chatting with Spong at the BAFTAs in London earlier this week, Cage revealed that the celebrated thriller represents the start of a new genre, and that a sequel was never part of the equation from the get-go.
"We created the genre," said Cage. "We own the genre, and we want to show that Heavy Rain was not a coincidence or a lucky shot - that it was really something that makes sense and that we can build on.”
"But at the same time I didn't want to make a sequel. I made that very clear before knowing whether the game would be a success or a failure, because I want to show that it's really a genre. Which means that you can use a similar drama to tell any type of story in any genre and in any style. “
Cage further added that Quantic Dream’s set its sights on exploring new territory in order to surprise fans, though pledged the studio still aims to focus on dark, adult-orientated content.
"So, we are going to explore different directions. Still very dark, still for adults, but completely different from Heavy Rain. We want to satisfy our fans, but we want to surprise them too. That's our challenge,” he explained.
Quantic Dream is currently working on two different projects, with Cage recently expressing interest in tackling the war genre at some point in the future.

This is kind of a disappointment, but I also like what he had to say about something new and different. I would love a sequel to HR as the game was fantastic. However, the storyline itself isn't really built for a sequel. The story was completed, no cliffhangers, so that is fine. Something new and exciting would be great.

Even if something may not be the best, creativity is always welcome, especially if it may create a new genre.
