SOE security breach: only "900" of stolen credit cards were active

Following the closure of Sony Online Entertainment’s network operations earlier today, the company has now confirmed that only a small percentage of credit card details - possibly seized by hackers during the recent security breach - could be used for fraudulent purposes.
Earlier today, PSU reported that Sony Online Entertainment had shut down its game servers after confirming that 24 million accounts had been compromised. The main fear from users of the service was that stolen data from credit cards linked to the accounts had landed in the hands of hackers. A later report stated that 12,700 customers’ credit card numbers may have been stolen, alongside personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts. SOE has now revealed, via GamesIndustry.biz, that only “900” of the credit cards on record were still active when stolen.
SOE had confirmed only last week, during the downtime of the PlayStation Network, that its network services were not affected. Today, however, it made a u-turn stating that: "in the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately." There’s no current indication as to when SOE’s online service will resume. Meanwhile, Sony Computer Entertainment America claims the PlayStation Network will return later this week.

Only 900! Sweet! Who'd complain about that?!? I'll give Sony 12,700 kicks, but "only 900" will be to the nuts.

I,WE, ALL of us deserve a damn relaunch date! getting real fed up.. tired of the same updates from PATRICK SEYBOLD, my only concern is for the PSN to be in working condition. i dont want to hear any more bullshít updates unless its the adament relaunch date. @tdr2009 #7 IF U DONT WANT TO GET UR CC STOLEN DONT PUT IT ON A ONLINE SYSTEM!!! as any person around the globe put their CC info on a online system they put it under their own risk cause it is a matter of time till some hacker break their security and get the info and sell it online like this time...
so next time for the CC user... SO GET OUT OF UR BED!!! go to a store that sell PSN CARDS!!! and use ur CC!!! to buy it and ur info will not get COMPROMISED!!! this is just only for GAMING!!!...
STILL WAITING SONY....PEACE!!!!

@7..I agree with you! Sony needs to take their time and do it right! People forget Xbox live went down for 2 weeks in 2008, and they PAY for that! We get PSN for free and since I have had my PS3 since 06' I have saved at least 300 bucks in xbox live fees....enough to buy another playstation! Some of you guys either need to play the SINGLE player mode that most games come with or GO OUTSIDE and get some SUN or fresh AIR or whatever.

The Xbox outage I keep hearing about. How many credit card numbers were stolen in that? How long did MS stonewall? This was a semi-valid arguement before the revelations of the theft and the dissembling on Sony's part AND the new "whoops we missed a breach"

i fully understand xbox has been hacked.. hacking is never going to stop. its a situation where the shíts going to hit the fan regardless the console.. i would rather support a American company then a submersing, elusive Japanese company. we americans have the highest consumer/product users with over 31 million, japan has almost 2 million.. might as well keep our money in our own country

@ Lord Naga Naga...your right about the stolen credit cards...
If you do the math...900 out of 24 million users is a .0003 percent chance you got jacked. Its still not acceptable and I agree Sony should do something for those 900 victims. But its funny how no one seems to complain about the people who did all this in the first place..THE HACKERS!!
Now SONY should give us a firm date...and let the date be furhter then they anticipates so if they can get it all resolved sooner then those of you who are on pins and needles waiting for psn to come bcak can be pleasently suprised. PEople forget they are rebuilding the whole network...

I'm not that stupid to put my CC online. But here you are whining again. Shows how pathetic you are, and other whiners.
@Destro2000 # 12 Yes, they do need to take their time. Everyone wants it done fast, which will leave PSN open for other hackers through security holes they didn't have time to fix because of all the people whining about PSN not being back yet.

@toothless in tuscon ..your either drunk now OR they beat some stupid into you either way YOU sound like the fool for assuming PSN is at fault cause you live in a shítty neighborhood .... now drink another king cobra on your porch.. or maybe take a self defense class @tdr and destro IT DOESNT MATTER THE"EXTRA SECURITY MEASURES" SONY TAKES, IT GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN REGARDLESS. DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THAT? QUIT PUTTING HOPE AND FAITH IN A COMPANY, ANY COMPANY FOR THAT MATTER,

@TDR i understand your logic, i do.. but honestly if the pentagon or Department of Defense cant stop a hack, do you really believe SONYS EXTRA SECURITY MEASURES can? theyre yanking our dícks with no intent for \" happy ending\" .. its inevitable the PSN will be hacked again.

Thats 900 too many Sony, period. Sony needs to get their horrid little act together, they should already have had the additional security in place, end of story. The PSN being hacked, SOE being hacked, it all never should have happened in the first place. To everyone saying they are going to send back their PS3s and cancel their PSN accounts, go for it, I am. Sony shouldn't get any more of our money at this point. After I sell my PS3 I'm going to go buy a nice AMERICAN made bluray player, because that's pretty much all I use my PS3 for anyways.

@9 ANOTHER mor0n creating a troll account to spill sh1t on SONY? Really? Pathetic sh1theads! Get lost you skum!
@24 You used it for watching movies, but yet you're here, on a GAMING SITE? Really? A mor0nic troll, maybe? GET LOST ALREADY, instead of talking sh1t!
SONY may have some blockheads in their company(which company doesn't?), but I'll stick with my PS3, use PSN cards if needs be, and keep enjoying the games I bought it for. You weaklings may as well just get lost! -

@28 I'll never get lost, never! You hear me? NEVER!!!!! But yes, I origionally had my PS3 for games and bluray movies, but got sick of the PSN's lack of content and Sony's knack for making this worse (like removing the other OS feature) so I woke up and bought a 360, now I pretty much only use the PS3 for blurays. I still have a PSN account however, and have been known to play a little Uncharted 2 here and there, so I still feel it is appropiate to sign on and comment on Sony's activities, reguardless of how unethical and corrupt they are.

900 isn't that bad witch leads to believe that its not that big of a deal since it isn't Sony's credit cards just their customers. I hate to say it man but im really leaning towards the 360 even if PSN goes live right now. The lies about SOE not being a 2nd attack then turning around and saying 900 CCs have been stolen really gets you thinking...should you trust Sony? or do they even care?

.. So, sony sent an email(may 2nd) to my sister saying her psn data had infact been compromised.. sad part is, my 11 year old nephews info was on there, he only had a playstation for 2months to play Calll of Duty black ops with me.. now his future will be affected.. shes pissed! might file suit against sony. its a damn shame a Behemoth company like SONY cant even protect a 11year olds identity?

@32 your 11 year old nephew shouldn't even be playing call of duty:black ops, so I have absolutely no sympathy If he wasn't bought a ps3 specifically for a game he's not allowed to play this wouldn't have happened, spastic
